1 And all the congregation of the sons of Israel assembled at Shiloh, and they set up there the tent of meeting {ohel moed: appointed meeting place}. The land was subdued {nikhbeshah: brought under control} before them.
2 And there remained among the sons of Israel {Yisrael: covenant people} seven tribes who had not divided their inheritance {nachalah: allotted possession}.
3 And Joshua said to the children of Israel, “How long will you be slack {mitrapim: Neglectful Delay} to go in to possess the land {haaretz: Territory Promised} which the LORD {YHWH, Covenant Fulfiller} the God of your fathers {Elohei avoteichem: Ancestral Deity} has given you?”
4 Appoint three men for each tribe {shevet: clan division}, and I will send them; let them rise and traverse the land and record it according to their inheritance {nachala: allotted territory}, then let them come to me.
5 And you shall divide it into seven portions{chalakim: allotment shares}; Judah shall stand on its border{gevul: territorial line} from the south, and the house of Joseph shall stand on their border from the north.
6 And you shall write down the land in seven portions {khalakim: inheritance shares}, and bring them here to me, and I will cast the lot for you here before the LORD our God {YHWH Eloheinu, Covenant Guide}.
7 For there is no portion {chelek: land share} for the Levites among you, because the priesthood of the LORD {YHWH, Priestly Lord} is their inheritance; and Gad, and Reuben, and half the tribe of Manasseh have taken their inheritance beyond the Jordan eastward, which Moses the servant of the LORD gave to them.
8 The men rose and departed, and Joshua {Yehoshua: appointed commander} ordered the surveyors to map the land, saying, “Go and walk about in the land and record it, then return to me; I will then cast a lot for you before the LORD {YHWH, Divine Arbiter} at Shiloh.”
9 So the men went and passed through the land, and they wrote it down by cities {le’arim: local settlements} into seven portions on a scroll {al-sefer: official record}. Then they came to Joshua at the camp in Shiloh.
10 And Joshua cast the lot for them at Shiloh before the LORD {YHWH, Divine Arbiter}, and there Joshua apportioned the land to the sons of Israel according to their divisions {machlekotam: tribal allotments}.
11 And the lot for the tribe {matteh: tribal division} of the sons of Benjamin came up according to their families {mishpechot: clan segments}, and the border of their allotted share came out between the sons of Judah and the sons of Joseph.
12 And the boundary {haggevul: tribal territory border} for them on the north side was from the Jordan River; it then ascended to the northern slope of Jericho, continued through the hill country toward the west, and its end was at the wilderness {midbarah: arid region} of Beth Aven.
13 And the boundary {gevul: Official Border} crossed over from there to Luz to the slope {ketef: Hillside Edge} of Luz southward—it is Bethel—and descended to Ataroth Addar on the hill that lies south of Lower Beth-horon.
14 And the boundary {gevul: marked border} turned and curved along the western side southward from the mountain facing Beth Horon. Its endpoints {totza’ot: boundary limits} were at Kiriath Baal (which is Kiriath Jearim), a city of the sons of Judah. This was the western side.
15 And the southern boundary {ufe'at-negebah: southward edge} began at the edge of Kiriath Jearim {kiryat-ye'arim: city of forests} and then ran westward to the spring of the waters of Nephtoah.
16 And the boundary {gevul: border marker} went down to the edge of the hill overlooking the Valley of Ben Hinnom, which lies in the Valley of Rephaim to the north; then it went down the Valley of Hinnom to the slope {ketef: hillside shoulder} of the Jebusite to the south, and it went down to En Rogel.
17 And it turned from the north and went out to the spring of Shemesh {Shemesh: place name}, proceeded to Geliloth, which faces the ascent of Adummim, and descended to the stone of Bohan {Bohan: tribal landowner}, the son of Reuben.
18 And it crossed over to the slope facing the Arabah {ha'aravah: Jordan Valley region} northward, and descended to the Arabah {ha'aravatah: low-lying plain}.
19 And the boundary passed along to the northern slope {ketef: projecting side} of Beth Hoglah, and its goings out {tetza’otav: border endpoints} were at the northern tongue of the Salt Sea, to the southern end of the Jordan. This was the southern boundary.
20 And the Jordan shall be its boundary on the eastern side; this is the inheritance {nachalat: land allotment} of the sons of Benjamin according to its boundaries all around by their families {mishpechotam: clan divisions}.
21 And the cities belonging to the tribe of the sons of Benjamin {Binyamin: right-hand son} according to their clans {mishpechoteihem: family divisions} were Jericho, Beth Hoglah, and Emek Ketziz.
22 Beth Arabah {beit ha'aravah: wilderness plain settlement}, Zemaraim, and Bethel {beit el: house of God}
23 And Avvim {avvim: Benjamin town}, and Parah {parah: allotted village}, and Ophrah.
24 Kephar Ammoni {ammoni: Ammonite region}, the Ammonah, Ophni, and Geba—twelve towns {arim: urban centers} with their villages
25 Gibeon {giv’on: hill city}, Ramah {haRamah: elevated ridge}, and Beeroth.
26 And the Mizpah {mitzpeh: watchtower site}, and the Kephirah, and the Mozah {motzah: place of going forth}.
27 Rekem {rekem: boundary town}, Irpeel, and Taralah {tara’alah: settlement locale}.
28 Zelah, Haeleph, and the Jebusite city—Jerusalem—Gibeah and Kiriath, fourteen cities {arim: urban settlements} with their villages. This was the inheritance {nachalat: allotted portion} of the descendants of Benjamin for their clans.
