1 And the LORD {YHWH, Lawgiver} spoke to Moses, saying {lemor: announcing a command},
2 Speak to the sons {benei: community designation} of Israel and say to them, “I am the LORD your God {YHWH Elohim, Sovereign Ruler}.”
3 You shall not follow the practices of the land of Egypt {erets-mitsrayim: place of bondage} where you dwelt, and you shall not follow the practices of the land of Canaan where I {YHWH, Sovereign Guide} bring you; and you shall not walk in their statutes.
4 You shall do my judgments {mishpatai: legal decisions} and you shall keep my statutes, to walk in them. I am the LORD your God {YHWH Eloheichem, Lawgiver and Covenant Authority}.
5 And you shall keep my statutes {chukotai: divinely decreed laws} and my judgments, which if a person does them, that person shall live by them. I am the LORD {YHWH, Covenant Lawgiver}.
6 None of you is to approach any close relative {besar-o: blood kin} to uncover nakedness; I {YHWH, Covenant Lawgiver} am the LORD.
7 You shall not uncover the nakedness of your father, that is, the nakedness of your mother; she is your mother {immekha: direct maternal relationship}. You shall not uncover her nakedness {ervatah: personal sexual exposure}.
8 You shall not uncover {tegalleh: Reveal Forbidden Intimacy} the nakedness of your father’s {avikha: Paternal Authority} wife; it is the nakedness of your father.
9 The nakedness of your sister, the daughter of your father or the daughter of your mother, whether born {moledet: origin indicator} in the house or born outside, you shall not uncover their nakedness {ervat: intimate exposure}.
10 The nakedness of your son’s daughter or of your daughter’s daughter you shall not uncover{tegalleh: forbidden exposure}—their nakedness—because they are your nakedness{ervatkha: direct kin}.
11 The nakedness {ervah: sexual exposure} of the daughter {bat: daughter} of your father’s wife, born to your father—she is your sister—you shall not uncover her nakedness.
12 You shall not uncover the nakedness {ervat: legal euphemism} of your father’s sister; she is the flesh {she’er: close blood relation} of your father.
13 You shall not uncover{tegalleh: expose nakedness} the nakedness of your mother’s sister, for she is your mother’s close relative{she’er: near kin}.
14 You shall not uncover the nakedness {ervat: sexual exposure} of your father’s brother, nor approach his wife—for she is your aunt {dodatekha: paternal aunt by marriage}.
15 You shall not uncover the nakedness of your daughter-in-law {kallah: son’s wife}; she is the wife of your son, and you shall not uncover her nakedness {ervah: intimate exposure}.
16 You shall not uncover {tegalleh: Reveal Forbidden Intimacy} the nakedness {ervat: sexual exposure} of your brother’s wife; it is the nakedness of your brother.
17 The nakedness of a woman and her daughter you shall not uncover; the daughter of her son and the daughter of her daughter you shall not take to uncover her nakedness. They are her close relatives {sha'arah: blood kin}; it is wickedness {zimmah: moral perversion}.
18 And you shall not take a woman {ishah: lawful wife} together with her sister, to make her a rival and uncover her nakedness {ervah: intimate exposure} while she is still living.
19 And you shall not approach a woman {ishah: female partner} during the uncleanness of her menstruation to uncover her nakedness {ervah: sexual exposure}.
20 And you shall not give your intimacy {shekhabtekha: sexual union} to the wife of your companion, to defile {tameah: ritually unclean} yourself with her.
21 And from your offspring you shall not give to Molech {Molekh: idolatrous deity} to make them pass through the fire, and you shall not profane the name of your God {Eloheikha, Guardian of Offspring}. I am the LORD.
22 And you shall not lie {tishkav: Hebrew euphemism for sexual union} with a male as one lies with a woman; it is an abomination {toevah: morally detestable practice}.
23 With any animal, you shall not have intercourse {shekhavtekha: sexual union} to defile yourself in it; nor shall a woman stand before an animal for mating; it is perversion {tevel: abominable confusion}.
24 Do not defile yourselves {tittam’u: bring ritual impurity} in any of these ways, for in all these the nations that I {YHWH, Divine Legislator} am driving out from before you have defiled themselves.
25 And the land became defiled, and I {YHWH, Eternal Judge} attended to its iniquity {avonah: moral guilt} upon it, and the land vomited out its inhabitants.
26 But you shall keep my statutes {chukotai: fixed decrees} and my rules, and none of you shall do any of these abominations {toevot: detestable practices}, neither the native nor the sojourner who dwells among you.
27 For all these abominations {toevot: detestable acts}, the people of the land who were before you did them, and the land has become defiled {titma: ritually contaminated}.
28 Lest the land vomit you out in your defiling {betamaachem: ritual impurity}, just as it vomited out the nation {goy: ethnic group} before you.
29 For anyone who does any of these abominations {to'evot: detestable sins}, the souls {nefashot: living persons} doing them shall be cut off from among their people.
30 And you shall keep my charge {mishmeret: prescribed responsibility} so as not to do any of the statutes of the abominations that were done before you, and you shall not become unclean by them. I am the LORD your God {YHWH Eloheichem, Covenant Lawgiver}.
