1 Does anyone among you dare, when having a matter against another, to have it judged before the unrighteous {adikon: acting unjustly}, and not before the saints {hagion: God’s consecrated people}?
2 Or do you not know that the saints {hagioi: set-apart people} will judge the world? And if the world is judged by you, are you unworthy of the least courts {kriteria: legal hearings}?
3 Do you not know that we will judge angels {angeloi: heavenly messengers}? How much more, then, matters pertaining to life {biotika: everyday affairs}!
4 Therefore, if you have worldly cases, do you appoint as judges those who have been despised {exouthenemenous: regarded as insignificant} in the church {ekklesia: gathered believers}?
5 I say this to your shame {entropen: public disgrace}. Is it really so that there is not a single wise person {sophos: able to judge} among you who will be able to judge between his brother?
6 But a brother {adelphos: fellow believer} goes to law with a brother, and this before unbelievers {apistōn: those lacking faith}.
7 In fact, therefore, it is already a complete defeat {hettema: spiritual failure} for you that you have lawsuits {krimata: internal litigation} among yourselves. Why not rather be wronged? Why not rather be defrauded?
8 But you yourselves do wrong {adikeite: act unjustly} and defraud, and this to brothers {adelphous: fellow believers}.
9 Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God {Theos, Righteous Judge}? Do not be deceived: neither fornicators {pornoi: sexual sinners}, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who are sexually passive, nor men who have sex with men.
10 Nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers {loidoroi: abusive speakers}, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God {Theos, Holy Judge}.
11 And such were some of you, but you were washed {apolouo: cleansed from sin}, but you were sanctified, but you were justified {dikaioo: declared righteous} in the name of the Lord Jesus {Kyrios Iesous, Saving Authority} and in the Spirit of our God {Pneuma Theou, Holy Cleanser}.
12 All things are permitted for me, but not all things are beneficial {sympherei: truly advantageous}. All things are permitted for me, but I will not be mastered {exousiazo: brought under power} by anything.
13 Foods are for the belly, and the belly is for foods, but God {Theos, Sovereign Judge} will do away with both it and them. But the body is not for sexual immorality {porneia: illicit union}, but for the Lord {Kyrios, Holy Master}, and the Lord is for the body.
14 But God {Theos, Resurrection Giver} raised the Lord {Kyrios, Risen Master}, and He will also raise us through His power.
15 Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ {Christos: Spiritual Head}? Should I then take Christ’s members and attach them to a prostitute? May it never {genoito: strong absolute refusal} be!
16 Or do you not know that the one who is joined {kollomenos: closely bound} to a prostitute becomes one body with her? For it says, “The two will become one flesh {sarka: marital union}.”
17 But the one who is joined to the Lord {Kyrios, Union-Giving Master} is one spirit {pneuma: shared inner life} with Him.
18 Flee sexual immorality {porneia: illicit sexual behavior}. Every sin that a person might commit is outside the body, but the one who practices sexual immorality sins against his own body {soma: physical self}.
19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit {pneuma: Divine Breath} who is in you, whom you have from God {Theos, Indwelling Source}, and you are not your own?
20 For you were bought with a price; therefore glorify God {Theos, Worthy of Honor} in your body {soma: physical self}.
