1 And the LORD {YHWH, Divine Communicator} spoke to Moses, saying {lemor: formal speech introduction}.
2 Make for yourself two trumpets of silver and of hammered work{miksha: beaten craftsmanship}; you shall make them, and they shall serve you for calling the assembly{edah: gathered community} and for the departure of the camps.
3 And when both trumpets {khatsotrot: sacred signal horns} are blown, the whole congregation {edah: gathered assembly} shall gather to you at the entrance of the tent of meeting.
4 But if they blow with only one {achat: single signal}, the princes {nesi’im: tribal leaders}, the heads of the thousands of Israel, will assemble to you.
5 And when you shall blow a signal blast {teruah: loud alarm}, then the camps {hamachanot: organized groups} that are encamped toward the east will set out.
6 And you shall blow a blast {teru‘â: trumpet signal} a second time, and the camps that are encamped to the south shall set out. They shall blow a blast for their journeys {massa: appointed departure}.
7 But when you assemble the congregation {qahal: called-out gathering}, you shall blow the trumpets but you shall not sound the alarm {ru’a: signaling shout}.
8 And the sons of Aharon, the priests {kohanim: set-apart ministers}, shall blow the trumpets, and it shall be for you a statute {choq: enduring ordinance} forever throughout your generations.
9 And when you come into battle in your land against the adversary who oppresses you, then you shall sound an alarm {teruah: urgent signal} with the trumpets, and you will be remembered before the LORD your God {YHWH Eloheikhem, Covenant Defender}, and you will be saved from your enemies.
10 And on the day of your joy, and on your appointed festivals, and on the beginnings of your months, you shall blow the trumpets over your burnt offerings and over your peace offerings, and they shall be a memorial before your God {Elohim, Worship Audience}. I am the LORD your God {YHWH Elohim, Covenant Lawgiver}.
11 And it came to pass in the second year, in the second month, on the twentieth day of the month, that the cloud {heanan: divine presence} was lifted from above the tabernacle of the testimony {haedut: covenant witness}.
12 And the sons of Israel set out on their journeys from the wilderness of Sinai, and the cloud{anan: Visible Sign of Divine Presence} came to rest in the wilderness of Paran{Paran: Southern Desert Region}.
13 And they set out for the first time at the command of the LORD {YHWH, Guiding Commander}, by the hand of Moses {Mosheh: chosen leader}.
14 And the standard {degel: tribal banner} of the camp of the sons of Judah set out first {barishonah: indicating priority}, according to their hosts, and over his host was Nahshon, son of Amminadab.
15 And over the host {tseva: organized division} of the tribe of the sons of Issachar was Nethanel {netanel: God has given} the son of Zuar.
16 And over the host {tsva: organized division} of the tribe of the sons {benei: genealogical unit} of Zebulun was Eliab, son of Helon.
17 And the tabernacle {mishkan: sanctuary dwelling} was taken down, and the sons of Gershon and the sons of Merari—the ones carrying the tabernacle—set out {venasu: camp departure}.
18 The standard {degel: tribal banner} of the camp of Reuben set out according to their armies {tsivaotam: organized divisions}, and over its army was Elitsur son of Shedeur.
19 And over the division {tseva: organized unit} of the tribe of the sons of Simeon, Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai {Shaddai, Almighty One} was in command.
20 And over the army {tseva: encamped force} of the tribe {matteh: tribal division} of the sons of Gad was Eliasaph son of Deuel.
21 And the Kohathites {haqqehatim: designated family line} who carried the holy things set out, and they set up the tabernacle {hamishkan: dwelling tent} before they arrived.
22 And the banner of the camp of the sons of Ephraim {Ephraim: fruitful double portion} set out by their armies, and over his army was Elishama {Elishama: God has heard}, son of Ammihud.
23 Gamliel {gamliel: God Is My Reward}, son of Pedahzur, was over the division {tseva: military unit} of the tribe of the sons of Manasseh.
24 And over the division {tseva: military camp group} of the tribe of the sons of Benjamin was Abidan {abidan: appointed commander} son of Gideoni.
25 And the banner {degel: tribal standard} of the camp of the sons of Dan set out, serving as the rear guard {meassef: one who gathers last} for all the camps by their divisions; and over its division was Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai.
26 And over the division{tseva: organized camp} of the tribe{matteh: tribal group} of the sons of Asher was Pagiel the son of Okhran.
27 And over the army {tseva: organized host} of the tribe of the sons of Naphtali was Ahira {Achira: appointed leader} son of Enan.
28 These are the journeys {mas'ei: stages of travel} of the sons of Israel by their divisions {letsivotam: military units}, and they set out.
29 And Moses said to Hobab son of Reuel the Midianite, father-in-law of Moses, “We are journeying to the place which the LORD {YHWH, Covenant Guide} said, ‘I will give it to you.’ Come with us and we will do good {hetavnu: benefit, bring good} to you, for the LORD has spoken good concerning Israel.”
30 And he said to him, “I will not go, but rather I will go to my land {artzi: native country} and to my birthplace {moladti: family origin}.”
31 And he said, “Please do not leave us, because you know our encampment in the wilderness {midbar: arid region}, and you will be as eyes {le’einayim: source of guidance} for us.”
32 And it shall be, if you go with us, then whatever good the LORD {YHWH, Provider and Rewarder} does for us, we will do good {heitavnu: show favor} to you as well.
33 And they set out from the mountain of the LORD {YHWH, Divine Leader} on a journey of three days; and the ark of the covenant of the LORD went before them a three-day journey to seek out a place of rest {menuchah: cessation from wandering} for them.
34 And the cloud of the LORD {YHWH, Protective Presence} was over them by day during their journeying {benasa'am: ongoing movement} from the camp.
35 And whenever the ark set out, Moses said, “Rise up, LORD{YHWH, Divine Warrior}, and let Your enemies{oyevecha: active adversaries} be scattered, and let those who hate You flee from Your presence.”
36 And whenever it came to rest, he would say, “Return, O LORD {YHWH, Journey’s Restorer}, to the myriads {rivvot: vast numbers} of thousands of Israel.”
