1 Moses was shepherding the flock {tson: small grazing animals} of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian, and he led the flock to the far side of the wilderness and came to the mountain of God {Elohim, Holy Encounter Source}, Horeb.
2 And the angel of the LORD {YHWH, Holy Presence in Flame} appeared to him as a flame of fire {belabbat-esh: intense blazing heat} from within the bush, and he looked and saw the bush burning with fire, yet it was not consumed.
3 And Moses said, “I will turn aside {asurah: voluntary approach} now and look at this great sight, why the bush {sneh: thorny shrub} is not burning up.”
4 When the LORD {YHWH, Burning-Bush Revealer} saw that he had turned aside to see, God {Elohim, Personal Caller} called to him from the midst of the bush and said, “Moses, Moses.” And he said, “Here I am.”
5 And He {Elohim, Sacred Authority} said, “Do not advance any nearer. Remove your sandals from upon your feet, for the place upon which you stand is holy ground {admat qodesh: set-apart soil}.”
6 And He said, “I am the God {Elohei, Covenant Guardian} of your father {avikha: ancestral forebear}, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” And Moses hid his face, because he was afraid to look at God.
7 And the LORD {YHWH, Attentive Deliverer} said, “I have surely seen the affliction {oni: crushing hardship} of My people who are in Egypt, and I have heard their cry because of their oppressors; for I have known their sufferings.”
8 And I {YHWH, Present Deliverer} have come down to rescue them from the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up from that land to a good and spacious {rechavah: generous expanse} land, to a land flowing with milk and honey, to the place of the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Amorite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite.
9 And now, behold, the cry of the sons of Israel has come to Me {YHWH, Attentive Hearer}, and I have also seen the oppression {lachats: harsh affliction} with which Egypt is oppressing them.
10 And now, go, and I {YHWH, Sending Rescuer} will send you to Pharaoh, and you shall bring out My people {ammi: covenant nation}, the sons of Israel, from Egypt.
11 And Moses said to God {Elohim, Divine Sender}, “Who am I {anokhi: personal identity} that I should go to Pharaoh and that I should bring the sons of Israel out of Egypt?”
12 And He {Elohim, Assuring Presence} said, “Surely I will be with you, and this will be the sign {haot: Confirming Proof} for you that I have sent you; when you bring out the people from Egypt, you will serve God on this mountain.”
13 Then Moses said to God {Elohim, Name Revealer}, "Behold, when I come to the sons of Israel and say to them, 'The God of your fathers {avot: ancestral leaders} has sent me to you,' and they say to me, 'What is His name? What shall I say to them?'"
14 And God {Elohim, Self-Revealing One} said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM {Ehyeh Asher Ehyeh, Self-Existent Ever-Present One}.” And He said, “Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’”
15 And God {Elohim, Sovereign Revealer} also said to Moses, "Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel: 'The LORD {YHWH, Covenant Name Disclosed}, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you.' This is My name {shem: revealed personal identity} forever, and this is My memorial {zichri: worshipful remembrance} from generation to generation."
16 Go and gather the elders of Israel and say to them, "The LORD {YHWH, Covenant Redeemer} the God {Elohei, Ancestral Protector} of your fathers, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, has appeared to me and said, 'I have surely attended to you and to what has been done to you in Egypt.'"
17 And I {Elohim, Promise Giver} said, “I will bring you up out of the affliction {oni: severe oppression} of Egypt to the land of the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Amorite, the Perizzite, the Hivite and the Jebusite, to a land flowing with milk and honey.”
18 And they will listen to your voice, and you will come, you and the elders {ziknei: representative leaders} of Israel, to the king of Egypt, and you will say to him, “The LORD {YHWH, Covenant Sender}, the God {Elohei, Hebrews' Protector} of the Hebrews, has met with us. So now, let us go a journey of three days into the wilderness, so that we may sacrifice to the LORD our God.”
19 But I {YHWH, All-Knowing Planner} knew that the king of Egypt would not let you go, not even by a strong hand {yad chazakah: overwhelming force}.
20 And I {YHWH, Mighty Deliverer} will stretch out My hand and I will strike Egypt with all My wonders {nifleotai: miraculous acts} that I will perform in its midst, and after that he will send you out.
21 And I {YHWH, Faithful Provider} will give favor {chen: unearned grace} to this people in the eyes of Egypt, and it shall be that when you go, you shall not go empty-handed.
22 And each woman shall ask from her neighbor and from the sojourner living in her house vessels of silver {kesef: precious metal} and vessels of gold and garments; and you shall put them on your sons and on your daughters, and you shall plunder Egypt {mitsrayim: land of bondage}.
