1 Joseph was brought into Egypt, and Potiphar, an official {seris: royal attendant} of Pharaoh, the captain of the guard {tabbakhim: executioner corps}, an Egyptian man, bought him from the Ishmaelites who had brought him there.
2 And the LORD {YHWH, Covenant Presence} was with Joseph, and he became a man prospering {matsliach: enjoying ongoing success}, and he was in the house of his master, the Egyptian.
3 And his master observed that the LORD {YHWH, Ever-Present Helper} was with him, and that the LORD caused everything he did to succeed {matsliach: grants tangible success} in his hand.
4 And Joseph found favor {chen: gracious acceptance} in his eyes, and he served him; and he set him as overseer over his house {bayit: full household}, and he placed all that he had into his hand.
5 And it came to pass, from the time he appointed him over his house and over all that he had, that the LORD {YHWH, Giver of Blessing} blessed the house of the Egyptian {ha-mitsri: foreign master} for Joseph’s sake; and the blessing of the LORD was on all that he had, in the house and in the field.
6 So he left all that he had in the hand of Joseph and did not concern himself with anything except the bread that he ate. Now Joseph was handsome in form {toar: physical build} and handsome in appearance {mareh: outward look}.
7 It came about after {achar: subsequent events} these things, that the wife of his master fixed her gaze on Joseph and said, “Lie {shikhvah: have sexual relations} with me.”
8 But he refused {vayemaen: firm rejection} and said to his master's wife, “Behold, my master does not know, with me, what is in the house, and all that he has, he has given into my hand {yad: authority and responsibility}.”
9 There is no one greater in this house than I, and he has not withheld anything from me except you, because you are his wife. So how could I do this great evil {haraah: moral wrong} and sin against God {Elohim, Moral Judge}?
10 And it came to pass, as she spoke to Joseph {Yosef: God adds} day after day, that he did not listen to her, to lie beside her {etslah: close beside}, or to be with her.
11 Now it happened on this day {hayom: specific occasion} that he went into the house to do his work {melakha: assigned task}, and none of the men of the household was in the house.
12 She seized him by his garment {beged: outer clothing}, saying, “Lie with me,” but he left his garment in her hand, and he fled and went outside {hakhutsah: to the open}.
13 And it happened when she saw that he had left his garment {bigdo: outer cloak} in her hand and had fled to the outside {hachutsah: open area}.
14 She then called in the men of her household and said to them, “See, he has brought us a Hebrew man to mock us {letsachek: publicly humiliate}. He came into my presence to lie with me {lishkav: sexual relations}, but I called out with a loud voice.”
15 And it happened that when he heard that I raised my voice and called out, he left his garment {bigdo: outer clothing} beside me and fled and went outside {hachutsah: open area}.
16 And she placed his garment {beged: outer cloak} beside her until his master {adon: household superior} came to his house.
17 And she spoke to him with these words {davarim: set accusation}, saying, “The Hebrew servant whom you brought to us came to me to mock me {tsachaq: ridicule, publicly humiliate}.”
18 And it happened, as I lifted up my voice {qol: urgent outcry} and called out, he left his garment beside me and fled {nus: rapid escape} outside.
19 And it happened when his master heard the words {divrei: spoken accusations} his wife spoke to him, saying, “According to these things your servant {avdecha: subordinate servant} did to me,” his anger burned.
20 And the master of Joseph took him and put him into the house of the prison {beit hasohar: official jailhouse}, the place where the king’s prisoners {asirei hamelekh: high-status captives} were bound. And he was there in the house of the prison.
21 But the LORD {YHWH, Faithful Companion} was with Joseph, and He extended kindness {chesed: steadfast covenant love} toward him and gave him favor in the eyes of the chief of the prison.
22 And the chief {sar: senior jailer} of the house of the prison placed all the prisoners who were in the prison into the hand {beyad: sphere of control} of Joseph; and whatever was done there, he was the one doing it.
23 The chief of the prison house did not look into anything that was in his hand, because the LORD {YHWH, Faithful Presence} was with him, and whatever he did, the LORD made it succeed {matsliakh: bring to success}.
