1 Therefore, holy brothers, sharers in a heavenly calling {klēseōs: heavenly summons}, set your minds on Jesus {Iesous, Faithful Heavenly Mediator}, the Apostle and High Priest of our confession.
2 He {Christos, Faithful Son} was faithful to the One {Theos, Sovereign Appointer} who appointed Him, just as Moses also was faithful in His house.
3 For this one {houtos: subject compared} has been deemed worthy of more glory than Moses {Mouses: exemplary leader}, inasmuch as the one who built the house has greater honor than the house itself.
4 For every house {oikos: dwelling or household} is built by someone, but the One who built all things is God {Theos, Sovereign Creator}.
5 And Moses was indeed faithful in all His {Theos, Covenant Householder} house as a servant {therapon: honored attendant}, for a testimony to the things that were to be spoken.
6 But Christ {Christos, Ruling Son} as Son is over His house {oikos: gathered people}, whose house we are if we hold fast the confidence and the boast of the hope.
7 Therefore, just as the Holy Spirit {Pneuma Hagion, Divine Witness} says, “Today {semeron: urgent opportunity}, if you hear His voice,”
8 Do not harden your hearts as in the provocation {parapikrasmos: embittering rebellion}, on the day of testing {peirasmos: trial of faith} in the wilderness.
9 Where your fathers {pateres: wilderness generation} tested Me {Theos, Long-Suffering Guide} and in a trial saw My works.
10 Therefore, I was angry with that generation, and I said, “They always go astray in their heart, but they have not known My {Theos, Righteous Judge} ways {hodous: covenant pathways}.”
11 As I {Theos, Holy Judge} swore in My wrath, “They shall certainly not enter My rest {katapausis: promised repose}.”
12 See to it, brothers {adelphoi: fellow believers}, lest there will be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in turning away from the living God {Theos, Ever-Living Lord}.
13 But exhort one another {parakaleite: earnest mutual urging} every day, as long as it is called “Today,” so that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin {hamartia: active rebellion against God}.
14 For we have become partakers of Christ {Christos, Covenant Head}, if indeed we hold fast the beginning of our confidence {hypostaseos: steadfast assurance} firm until the end.
15 In the time it is said, “Today, if you hear His {Theos, Faithful Speaker} voice, do not harden your hearts as in the provocation {parapikrasmos: wilderness rebellion}.”
16 For who were those who, having heard, provoked {parepikranan: bitterly opposed}? Was it not all who came out of Egypt {Aigyptou: place of oppression} through Moses?
17 But with whom was He {Theos, Righteous Judge} angry for forty years? Was it not with those who had sinned {hamartesasin: missed the mark}, whose bodies fell in the wilderness?
18 But to whom did He {Theos, Righteous Oath-Giver} swear that they would not enter into His rest {katapausis: ceasing from labor}, except to those who were disobedient?
19 And we see that they were not able to enter {eiselthein: reach promised rest} because of unbelief {apistian: lack of trust}.
