1 For behold, the Lord, the LORD of hosts {YHWH Tsevaot, Commander of Armies} removes from Jerusalem and from Judah support and staff, every support of bread {lechem: physical sustenance} and every support of water.
2 The mighty man and the man of war, the judge {shofet: judicial authority} and the prophet, the diviner and the elder {zaken: respected community leader}.
3 The commander of fifty, and the honored man {nesu panim: one lifted in esteem}, and the counselor, and the wise artisan, and the discerning in incantation {navon lahash: skilled in whispered counsel}.
4 And I {YHWH: Supreme Judge} will appoint youths {ne'arim: inexperienced minors} as their princes, and the capricious ones shall rule {yimshlu: assume power} over them.
5 And the people will oppress {venigash: press in hostility} one another, each man against his companion, and every man against his neighbor; the youth will act arrogantly toward the elder, and the despised one against the honored one {nikhbad: highly esteemed}.
6 For a man will seize his brother{akh: close kinsman} in his father’s house, saying, “You have a garment{simlah: status sign}; come, be our ruler, and let this ruin be under your hand.”
7 He will lift up his voice on that day, saying, “I will not be a healer {chovesh: wound binder}; and in my house there is neither bread nor clothing. Do not make me a ruler of the people {am: community}.”
8 For Jerusalem has stumbled and Judah has fallen, because their tongue and their deeds are against the LORD {YHWH, Source of Glory}, to provoke the eyes of His glory {kevodo: divine honor}.
9 The recognition of their faces testifies against them, and they declare their sin like Sodom; they do not conceal it. Woe to their soul {nefesh: life essence}, for they have dealt evil {ra'ah: moral harm} to themselves.
10 Say to the righteous {tsaddiq: morally upright} that it will be well {tov: favorable outcome} with him, for he will eat the fruit of his deeds.
11 Woe to the wicked {rasha: evildoer}! Evil shall come upon him, for the recompense {gemul: payback for deeds} of his hands will be done to him.
12 My {YHWH: Righteous Judge} people, infants have become their oppressors, and women rule over them. My people, your leaders {meashrekha: your guides} lead you astray, and they have swallowed up {billeu: completely consumed} the way of your paths.
13 The LORD {YHWH, Righteous Judge} stands up to contend, and He stands to judge the peoples {ammim: nations and groups}.
14 The LORD {YHWH, Supreme Judge} will enter into judgment against the elders of His people and His princes; you have consumed the vineyard, and the plunder of the poor {ani: the needy} is in your houses.
15 What do you mean by crushing My people and grinding the faces of the poor {aniyyim: those afflicted}? declares the Lord GOD {Adonai YHWH Tsevaot, Supreme Commander}.
16 And the LORD {YHWH, Righteous Judge} said, “Because the daughters of Zion are haughty {gavhu: prideful posture} and walk with outstretched necks and casting glances, walking and mincing as they go and making a tinkling with their feet.”
18 In that day the LORD {Adonai, Sovereign Judge} will take away the splendor of the anklets, the headbands, and the crescent-shaped ornaments {saharonim: lunar jewelry}.
19 The pendants and the bracelets {shirot: wrist ornaments} and the veils {re'alot: face coverings}.
20 The headdresses, the anklets, the sashes {kishurim: decorative belts}, the perfume boxes {batei hanefesh: scent cases}, and the charms.
21 The rings {hattabba'ot: circular ornaments} and the nose rings {venizmei: jewelry worn through nasal piercings},
22 The tunics {machalatzot: ornate outer garments} and the mantles and the cloaks and the purses {charitim: small moneybags}.
23 And the mirrors, the linen garments {sedinim: fine linen finery}, the headdresses, and the veils {redidim: delicate coverings}.
24 And it will be that instead of fragrance there will be rot {maq: decaying loss}, and instead of a belt, a rope, and instead of the work of braiding, baldness, and instead of a fine garment, a sash of sackcloth {saq: coarse mourning cloth}, and instead of beauty, a brand-mark.
25 Your men shall fall by the sword, and your mighty {gevurah: strong champions} in the war {milchamah: organized conflict}.
26 Her gates {petacheha: public portals} will lament and mourn; she will be laid waste {venikkatah: laid waste} and sit upon the ground.
