1 Then the sons of Aaron Nadab and Abihu each took his censer, put fire in it, placed incense on it, and brought unauthorized fire before the LORD {YHWH, Lawgiver} which He {He: Divine Authority} had not commanded them.
2 And fire went out from before the LORD {YHWH, Divine Judge} and consumed{akhal: utterly destroy} them, and they died before the LORD.
3 And Moses said to Aaron, “This is what the LORD {YHWH, Holiness Revealer} spoke when He said, ‘Among those near Me I will show Myself holy {ekkadesh: manifest set-apartness}, and before all the people I will be honored.’” And Aaron was silent.
4 And Moses {Mosheh: Covenant Mediator} called to Mishael and to Elzaphan, the sons of Uzziel, the uncle of Aaron, and said to them, “Come near and carry your brothers {acheikhem: kinship bond} from before the sanctuary to outside the camp.”
5 So they drew near and carried them in their tunics outside the camp, just as Moses {Mosheh: prophetic leader} commanded {dibber: issued a direct order}.
6 And Moses said to Aaron and to Eleazar and to Ithamar, his sons, “Do not dishevel your heads, and do not tear your garments, so that you will not die and the LORD {YHWH, Divine Judge} will not become angry with the whole congregation. But your brothers, the entire house of Israel, may weep for the burning {sereifah: divine judgment} that the LORD has kindled.”
7 And from the entrance of the tent of meeting, you must not go out, lest you die, for the oil of anointing of the LORD {YHWH, Covenant Sanctifier} is upon you; and they did according to the word {davar: authoritative instruction} of Moses.
8 Then the LORD {YHWH, Divine Instructor} spoke to Aaron, saying {lemor: introductory formula},
9 Wine and strong drink you shall not drink—you and your sons with you—when you enter the Tent of Meeting {ohel moed: appointed sanctuary}, lest you die; it is a statute {chukkat: binding ordinance} forever for your generations.
10 And you shall separate between the holy {kodesh: set-apartness} and the common, and between the unclean and the clean {tahor: ritual purity}.
11 And to instruct the sons of Israel in all the statutes which the LORD {YHWH, Covenant Lawgiver} spoke to them by the hand of Moses {Mosheh: appointed mediator}.
12 And Moses said to Aaron, Eleazar, and Ithamar, his remaining sons, “Take the grain offering that remains from the LORD’s {YHWH, Sanctuary Owner} fire offerings, and eat it as unleavened bread {matsot: without yeast} beside the altar, for it is most holy.”
13 And you shall eat it in a holy place, for it is your portion {khokecha: assigned share} and your sons’ portion from the fire-offerings of the LORD {YHWH, Worship Recipient}; for thus I have been commanded.
14 And the breast of the wave offering and the thigh of the heave offering you shall eat in a clean place, you and your sons and your daughters with you; for they have been given as your portion {khok: allotted share} and the portion of your sons from the sacrifices of the peace offerings {shalmei: fellowship offerings} of the sons of Israel.
15 The thigh of the heave offering and the breast of the wave offering shall be brought with the fire-offerings of the fats as a wave offering before the LORD {YHWH, Worship Recipient}, and it shall be for you and for your sons with you as a perpetual statute {chok: binding decree} as the LORD commanded.
16 And concerning the goat of the sin offering, Moses diligently{darosh: emphatic inquiry} inquired, and behold, it had been burned; so he was angry with Eleazar and Ithamar, the remaining{hanotarim: those left} sons of Aaron, and said,
17 Why did you not eat the sin offering in the holy place? For it is most holy {kodesh kadasim: holiest rank}; and it was given to you to bear the guilt of the congregation, to make atonement for them before the LORD {YHWH, Divine Atoner}.
18 Behold, since its blood {dama: blood offering} was not brought into the holy place’s inner area, you must indeed eat it in the holy place, just as I have commanded {tsiveiti: authoritative command}.
19 And Aaron spoke to Moses, “Behold, today they have offered their sin offering and their burnt offering before the LORD {YHWH, Divine Judge}; but such things as these have happened to me. If I had eaten the sin offering today, would it have been good {hayiṭav: find favor} in the eyes of the LORD?”
20 Moses {Mosheh: chosen leader} heard this, and it was pleasing {vayitav: personal approval} in his eyes.
