1 You shall not make any idols for yourselves or an image or a pillar {matsevah: ritual marker}, nor shall you set up any engraved stone in your land to bow down upon it. For I am the LORD {YHWH Eloheikhem, Sovereign Creator} your God.
2 You shall keep my Sabbaths {shabbetotai: covenant sign} and revere my sanctuary; I am the LORD {YHWH, Holiness Giver}.
3 If you walk in my statutes{chukot: enduring decrees} and keep my commandments{mitsvot: binding instructions} and do them,
4 And I will give your rains {geshem: essential lifegiving water} in their seasons {ittam: appointed times}, and the land will yield its produce, and the tree of the field will give its fruit.
5 The threshing will overtake you at the grape harvest, and the grape harvest will overtake the sowing {zara: planting}; you will eat your bread to satisfaction {lasova: fullness} and dwell in safety in your land.
6 And I will grant peace {shalom: wholeness and security} in the land, and you will lie down, and none will cause you terror {macharid: fear-inducing presence}; I will cause the evil beast to cease from the land, and the sword shall not pass through your land.
7 And you will pursue{r’daf: decisive pursuit} your enemies, and they will fall before you by the sword{cherev: instrument of judgment}.
8 And five of you will pursue a hundred, and a hundred of you will pursue ten thousand, and your enemies will fall {venaflu: decisive overthrow} before you by the sword {cherev: instrument of judgment}.
9 And I will turn {upanitiy: look with intention} toward you and make you fruitful, and I will multiply you, and I will establish my covenant {beriti: binding promise} with you.
10 You shall eat stored {yashan: stored provisions} grain long kept, and you shall bring out the old because of {mippnei: due to} the new harvest.
11 And I will set my dwelling {mishkan: sacred tabernacle} among you, and my soul will not abhor {tigʿal: deep loathing} you.
12 And I will walk among you, and I will be your God{Elohim, Covenant Presence}; and you will be for me a people{am: covenant community}.
13 I am the LORD your God {YHWH Eloheikhem, Covenant Liberator}, who brought you out of the land of Egypt from being slaves; and I broke the bars {motot: burden bars} of your yoke and made you walk in uprightness.
14 But if you do not listen {shama: heed attentively} to Me and do not perform all these commandments {mitsvot: binding directives};
15 And if you despise my statutes and if your soul loathes my judgments {mishpat: legal rulings} so that you do not do all my commandments, and so you break my covenant {berit: solemn binding pledge}.
16 I also will do this to you, and I will appoint upon you sudden terror{behalah: panic}, wasting disease{shachefet: debilitating sickness}, and fever that consumes your eyes and pines away your life. You will sow your seed in vain, and your enemies will eat it.
17 And I will set my face {panai: direct opposition} against you, and you shall be struck down before your enemies; those who hate you will rule over you, and you will flee though no one is pursuing {rodef: single chaser} you.
18 And if even after these things you do not listen to Me, then I will add to discipline {yasserah: corrective chastening} you seven times {sheva: full measure} for your sins.
19 And I will break the majesty {ge’on: exalted pride} of your strength and make your heavens like iron {barzel: strong metal} and your land like bronze.
20 Your strength {kochakhem: vital force} will be spent for nothing, and your land will not give its yield {yevulah: agricultural produce}, and the tree of the land will not give its fruit.
21 And if you walk with Me in hostility {keri: stubborn opposition}, and are not willing to listen to Me, then I {YHWH, Disciplinary Judge} will add upon you a blow seven times according to your sins.
22 And I {YHWH, Covenant Enforcer} will send among you the wild animal of the field, and it shall make you bereaved {shikl’ah: deprived of offspring}, and it shall destroy your livestock, and it shall reduce you in number, and your roads shall become desolate.
23 And if, despite these things {be’eleh: preceding warnings}, you will not accept correction from Me but walk with Me in hostility {keri: stubborn opposition}.
24 And I will also walk with you in hostility {keri: antagonism}, and I will strike {hiqeti: punitive action} you—even I—seven times for your sins.
25 And I will bring a sword upon you, executing vengeance for the covenant {berit: binding agreement}; you will be gathered into your cities, and I will send a plague {dever: pestilence} among you, and you will be delivered into the hand of your enemy.
26 When I break the staff of bread {mateh lechem: sustenance symbol} for you, then ten women will bake your bread in one oven, and they will return your bread by weight, and you will eat and not be satisfied {sava: filled to fullness}.
27 And if, in spite of this {bezot: despite prior warnings}, you do not listen to Me but walk with Me in hostility {keri: deliberate opposition}.
28 And I {ani: Emphatic Self} will walk with you in the heat of hostility {chamat: intense anger}, and even I will discipline you seven times for your sins.
29 You will eat the flesh {besar: physical body} of your sons and the flesh of your daughters {benotekhem: innocent offspring}.
30 And I will destroy your high places {bamoteikhem: elevated worship sites}, and I will cut off your sun-pillars {khamaneikhem: idolatrous sun-pillars}, and I will lay your corpses on the corpses of your idols. My soul will abhor you.
31 And I {YHWH, Covenant Judge} will make your cities a ruin, and I will make your sanctuaries {mikdesheichem: sacred precincts} desolate, and I will not take delight {ariach: intentional savoring} in the scent of your pleasing aroma.
32 And I myself will make the land {haarets: territory under judgment} desolate, and your enemies {oyevekhem: hostile foes} who dwell in it will be appalled.
33 And I will scatter you among the nations {goyim: foreign peoples}, and I will unsheath the sword after you, and your land will become a desolation {shemamah: complete devastation}, and your cities will be in ruins.
34 Then the land {ha’arets: covenant territory} will enjoy its sabbaths all the days of its desolation {hoshammah: uninhabited state}, while you remain in the land of your enemies. Then the land will rest and will fulfill its sabbaths.
35 All the days of desolation the land will observe rest {tishbot: cease from labor}, which it did not observe during your Sabbaths {shabbatot: appointed seasons}, when you were dwelling on it.
36 And the ones remaining among you, I {YHWH, Divine Discipliner} will bring faintness {morekh: trembling, loss of courage} into their heart in the lands of their enemies, and the sound of a driven leaf will pursue them, and they will flee as one flees from the sword, and they will fall though there is no one pursuing.
37 And they will stumble, each man over his brother, as from before a sword, though there is no one pursuing. And there shall not be for you any standing {tekumah: ability to stand} before your enemies {oyev: hostile adversaries}.
38 And you shall perish {vaavadtem: completely vanish} among the nations, and the land {erets: territory of dominion} of your enemies will devour you.
39 And those who remain {nish'arim: survivors} among you will waste away {yimmaku: gradual perishing} in their iniquity in the lands of your enemies; and also in the iniquities of their fathers they will waste away with them.
40 And they will confess their iniquity and the iniquity of their fathers in their treachery{ma‘al: faithless breach} that they committed against Me{YHWH, Just Judge}—and also that they walked with Me in hostility.
41 Also, I {YHWH, Sovereign Judge} will walk with them in hostility {keri: contrary opposition}, and I will bring them into the land of their enemies; then their uncircumcised heart will be humbled, and then they will make amends for their iniquity.
42 And I will remember my covenant{berit: binding agreement} with Jacob, and also{ve-af: cumulative addition} my covenant with Isaac, and also my covenant with Abraham I will remember, and I will remember the land.
43 And the land will lie abandoned by them and will observe its sabbaths in its desolation, and they will accept the punishment for their iniquity {avonam: moral guilt} because they rejected my judgments and their soul {nafsham: life essence} abhorred my statutes.
44 And yet when they are in the land of their enemies, I have not rejected them, nor have I abhorred them so as to destroy them utterly or to break my covenant {berit: solemn agreement} with them; for I am the LORD {YHWH, Covenant-Keeper} their God.
45 But I will remember for them the covenant {berit rishonim: ancestral covenant} of the first ones, whom I brought out from the land of Egypt before the eyes of the nations, to be their God {Elohim, Divine Protector}. I am the LORD {YHWH, Faithful Redeemer}.
46 These are the decrees {chuqqim: binding statutes}, the judgments, and the instructions that the LORD {YHWH, Covenant Legislator} set between Himself and the sons of Israel at Mount Sinai by the hand of Moses.
