1 And the LORD {YHWH, Law-Giver} spoke to Moses, saying {lemor: introduction to command},
2 Speak to Aaron and to his sons, and let them keep themselves apart from the holy things of the sons of Israel, so that they do not profane My holy {kadoshi: set-apart identity} name, which they sanctify to Me. I am the LORD {YHWH, Covenant Sanctifier}.
3 Say to them, “For your generations every man who draws near from among any of your offspring to the holy things which the sons of Israel consecrate to the LORD {YHWH, Holy Recipient}, while his uncleanness is upon him — that soul shall be cut off from before Me {YHWH, Divine Judge}. I am the LORD.”
4 Any man from the offspring of Aaron who is afflicted with a skin disease or has a discharge must not eat the holy things {kodashim: offerings set apart} until he is clean. And anyone who touches anything unclean through contact with a dead person {nefesh: a human life, here a dead body} or a man with a semen emission must not eat them.
5 Or a man who touches any crawling creature {sherets: swarming creature} that imparts uncleanness to him, or one who comes into contact with a person who becomes unclean through any of his uncleanness {tum-ato: ritual impurity}.
6 Any person who touches{tigga‘: ritual touch} it shall be unclean until the evening, and he shall not eat from the holy things unless he has washed his flesh{basar: physical body} in water.
7 And when the sun has set, he shall be clean{taher: declared pure}, and afterward he may eat of the holy things; for it is his food{lakhmo: priestly portion}.
8 He must not eat a carcass {nevelah: animal found dead} or a torn animal, so as not to become unclean by it. I am the LORD {YHWH, Sanctifier}.
9 And they shall keep My charge {mishmeret: sacred duty} so that they do not bear sin upon it and die in it, because they profane it. I am the LORD {YHWH, Holy Maker} who sanctifies them.
10 And no outsider {zar: non-priest person} may eat of the holy thing {kodesh: sacred offering}; neither a sojourner of a priest nor a hired laborer may eat it.
11 But if a priest {kohen: sanctuary minister} acquires a person as property with his money, he may eat of it; and those born in his house may also eat of his bread {lechem: provision}.
12 And if a daughter of a priest becomes {tihyeh: enters a new state} the wife of a layman {zar: one not of priestly line}, she shall not eat of the contribution of the holy things.
13 If a priest’s daughter becomes a widow {almanah: bereft of her husband} or is divorced and has no offspring and returns to her father’s house as in her youth, she may eat from her father’s food; but no outsider {zar: non-priest} shall eat of it.
14 And if any man eats a sacred thing{kodesh: holy offering} unintentionally, then he shall add a fifth part to it{chamishit: one-fifth portion} and give the sacred thing to the priest.
15 And they shall not profane the holy things {kodesh: set-apart objects} of the sons of Israel, those which they lift up as offerings to the LORD {YHWH, Sanctity Upholder}.
16 And they shall not cause them to bear liability {ashmah: legal obligation} in eating their holy offerings, for I am the LORD {YHWH, Sanctifier} who sanctifies them.
17 And the LORD {YHWH, Lawgiver} spoke to Moses {Mosheh: Covenant Mediator}, saying,
18 Speak to Aaron and to his sons and to all the sons of Israel, and you shall say to them: Any man, any man from the house of Israel or from the foreigner in Israel who brings his offering for all their vows or for all their freewill offerings that they bring to the LORD {YHWH, Covenant Recipient} as a burnt offering {olah: wholly burned gift}.
19 For your acceptance {ratson: divine favor}, a perfect male {tamim: without defect} must be taken from the cattle, from the sheep, or from the goats.
20 Any animal that has a defect {mum: blemish disqualifying it} you shall not offer, because it will not be accepted {leratson: favor or approval} for you.
21 And when a man brings a fellowship offering to the LORD {YHWH, Covenant-Maker}, to fulfill a vow {neder: binding promise} or as a freewill offering from the herd or the flock, it must be perfect for acceptance; no blemish shall be in it.
22 You shall not offer to the LORD {YHWH, Sacred Recipient} any animal that is blind, broken, maimed {kharuts: permanent deformity}, has a wart, or has a discharge, an itch, or scabs; nor shall you place any of these on the altar as a burnt offering to the LORD.
23 If an ox or a sheep is deformed {sarua: physically misshapen} or stunted, you may offer it as a freewill offering {nedavah: voluntary gift}; but for a vow, it shall not be accepted.
24 You shall not offer to the LORD {YHWH, Holy Recipient} any that is crushed {umaukh: physically damaged}, shattered, torn, or cut off; and in your land you shall not do so.
25 And from the hand of a foreigner you shall not bring the bread of your God {Elohim, Ritual Judge} from any of these, for their corruption {mashchatam: internal defect} is in them; a defect is in them, and they will not be accepted for you.
26 And the LORD {YHWH, Lawgiver} spoke to Moses {Mosheh: Appointed Leader}, saying,
27 When an ox, a lamb, or a goat is born, it must remain under its mother for seven days {shivʿat yamim: complete week}; but from the eighth day onward, it will be accepted as a fire offering to the LORD {YHWH, Recipient of Sacrifice}.
28 And an ox or a sheep—you shall not slaughter it and its young {ben: generational bond} on the same day {yom echad: single-day restriction}.
29 And when you offer a thanksgiving sacrifice to the LORD {YHWH, Worship Recipient}, offer it so that it may be accepted {lirtsonkhem: for your acceptance}.
30 On that day it shall be eaten; you shall not leave any of it {mimmennu: from it} until morning. I am the LORD {YHWH, Ritual Sanctifier}.
31 And you shall keep my commandments {mitsvotai: binding instructions} and do them; I am the LORD {YHWH, Covenant Lawgiver}.
32 And you shall not profane My holy name, so that I {YHWH, Sanctifier} may be sanctified among the Israelites. I am the LORD who makes you holy {kadosh: set apart}.
33 I am the LORD {YHWH, Deliverer} who brought you out {hamotsi: personal liberator} from the land of Egypt to be your God. I am the LORD.
