1 The LORD {YHWH, Promise Fulfiller} gave Sarah His attention {pakad: caring intervention}, just as He had said; the LORD carried out for Sarah exactly what He had spoken.
2 Sarah conceived and gave Abraham a son when he was old, at the appointed time {moed: set time} that God {Elohim, Promise Keeper} had spoken to him.
3 Abraham named {shem: personal identity} his son {beno: promised heir} Isaac—the child born to him, the one Sarah bore for him.
4 On the eighth day of his life, Abraham circumcised Isaac, as God {Elohim, Covenant Commander} had commanded {tsivvah: gave a binding directive} him.
5 Abraham {Avraham: Covenant Recipient} was one hundred years {ben-me’at shanah: a hundred years old} old when Isaac was born to him.
6 Sarah said, “God {Elohim, Joy-Giver} has given me laughter {tsekhok: delighted, joyful surprise}; everyone who hears will laugh over me.”
7 And she said, “Who would have declared {milel: spoken promise} to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? For I have borne him a son in his advanced age {lizkunav: advanced age}.”
8 The child grew and was weaned {higgamel: weaning milestone}, and Abraham {avraham: chosen patriarch} prepared a great feast on the day Isaac was weaned.
9 And Sarah {Sarah: covenant matriarch} noticed that Hagar’s Egyptian son, whom she had borne to Abraham, was laughing {metsahek: derisive behavior}.
10 So she said to Abraham, “Drive out the maidservant {amah: female household slave}—this one—and her son, for the son of this maidservant will not inherit {yarash: receive legal share} together with my son, with Isaac.”
11 The matter {davar: unfolding situation} weighed heavily in Abraham’s {Avraham: covenant patriarch} eyes because it concerned his son.
12 And God {Elohim, Covenant Reassurer} said to Abraham, “Do not let it be displeasing in your eyes concerning the boy or your slave woman. In all that Sarah says to you, listen to her voice, for in Isaac your offspring {zera: covenant lineage} shall be called.”
13 And the son of the maidservant {amah: servant woman} I will also make into a nation {goy: distinct people}, because he is your offspring.
14 At dawn Abraham {avraham: covenant recipient} rose, took bread and a skin of water, and gave them to Hagar. He put the provisions on her shoulder, along with the boy {yeled: young boy}, then sent her away. She departed and wandered in the wilderness of Be’er Sheba.
15 When the water {hamayim: life-sustaining supply} was gone from the skin {hachemet: leather container}, she put the boy under one of the bushes.
16 She went and sat down by herself, opposite, at a distance like the range of a bow, for she said, “Let me not see the death of the boy {yeled: young child}.” And she sat opposite and lifted her voice {kol: cry of distress} and wept.
17 And God {Elohim, Merciful Hearer} heard the voice {kol: heartfelt cry} of the boy, and the angel of God called to Hagar from the heavens and said to her, “What is it with you, Hagar? Do not be afraid, for God has heard the voice of the boy where he is.”
18 Arise, lift up the boy {naar: young male}, and grasp him with your hand, for I {Elohim, Protector Of Ishmael} will make him a great nation.
19 Then God {Elohim, Miracle Worker} opened her eyes {eineha: perception restored}, and she saw a well of water. She went there, filled the skin-bottle with water, and gave the boy a drink.
20 And God {Elohim, Faithful Sustainer} was present with the youth {hanaar: young male} throughout his growth; he lived in the wilderness and became an archer.
21 He settled in the wilderness {midbar: arid region} of Paran, and his mother took a wife for him from the land of Egypt {Mitsrayim: southern neighbor}.
22 And it was then that Abimelech and Phicol, the commander of his army, spoke to Abraham and declared, “God {Elohim, Sovereign Supporter} is with you in every {bekhol: sphere} thing you do.”
23 And now, swear to me here by God {Elohim, Faithful Oath Witness} that you will not deal falsely with me or with my descendants {nini: future descendant}, or with my descendants after them; but according to the kindness that I have shown you, you shall do with me and with the land in which you have sojourned.
24 Abraham {Avraham: covenant family head} said, “I myself {anokhi: emphatic self-reference} will swear.”
25 Abraham {Avraham: Covenant Recipient} reproved Abimelech over the well {be'er: vital water source} of water that Abimelech’s servants had seized.
26 And Abimelech said, “I did not know who did this matter {davar: specific event}; you did not tell me, and I did not hear of it until today {hayom: this very day}.”
27 Abraham {Avraham: patriarchal leader} gathered flocks of sheep and herds of cattle and gave them to Abimelech, and they both made a covenant {berit: solemn agreement}.
28 Abraham {Avraham: Covenant Patriarch} designated seven ewe lambs {kivsot: young female sheep} from the flock to stand apart.
29 And Abimelech {Avimelekh: Philistine leader} said to Abraham, “What is the significance of these seven ewe lambs {kevashot: young female sheep} that you have set apart?”
30 And he said, “Because you will take these seven ewe-lambs {kevasot: covenant pledges} from my hand, it will serve as a witness {edah: judicial proof} that I have dug this well.”
31 Therefore he called that place Be'er {be'er: water well} Sheva, because there the two of them swore an oath {nishbe'u: binding promise}.
32 They established a covenant at Beersheba {biveer shava: site of oath-making}, and Abimelech and Phicol, the commander of his army, rose up and returned to the land of the Philistines {Pelishtim: coastal people}.
33 At Beersheba Abraham planted a tamarisk tree, and there he invoked the name of the LORD {YHWH, Faithful Covenant Lord}, the everlasting God {El, Everlasting Ruler}.
34 Abraham {Avraham: Covenant Recipient} sojourned in Philistine territory for many days {yamim: extended periods}.
