1 Now the serpent was more shrewd {arum: subtle and deceptive} than any animal of the field that the LORD God {YHWH Elohim, Sovereign Creator} had made. And he said to the woman, “Is it indeed the case that God said, ‘You shall not eat from any tree of the garden’?”
2 The woman {ishah: first female} said to the serpent, “From the fruit {peri: cultivated produce} of the trees of the garden we may eat.”
3 But from the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, God {Elohim, Divine Commander} said, "You must not eat from it, and you must not touch it, lest you die {temutun: face certain death}."
4 Then the serpent {nachash: deceptive tempter} said to the woman, “You will certainly not die {mot: complete loss of life}.”
5 For God {Elohim, All-Knowing Ruler} knows that in the day you eat from it, your eyes {eineikhem: moral perception} will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.
6 When the woman saw that the tree was good to eat from, pleasing {taavah: intense longing} to look at, and attractive {nechmad: greatly treasured} as something that seemed to make one wise, she took some of its fruit and ate. Then she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate.
7 Then the eyes {einei: physical perception} of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings {chagorot: waist wraps} for their waists.
8 They heard the sound {kol: audible approach} of the LORD God {YHWH Elohim, Searching Judge} walking about in the garden at the time of the day’s breeze, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden.
9 Then the LORD God {YHWH Elohim, Gracious Seeker} called to the man {haadam: representative human} and said to him, “Where are you?”
10 He said, “I heard the sound {kolekha: audible presence} of You in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked {eirom: fully exposed}, so I hid myself.”
11 And He {YHWH Elohim, Righteous Questioner} said, “Who told you that you were naked {eirom: exposed vulnerability}? Have you eaten from the tree which I commanded you not to eat from?”
12 And the man said, “The woman whom You {YHWH Elohim, Generous Giver} gave to be with me, she gave to me from the tree {haets: the forbidden tree}, and I ate.”
13 And the LORD God {YHWH Elohim, Righteous Judge} said to the woman, “What is this you have done?” And the woman said, “The serpent {nachash: lying tempter} deceived me, and I ate.”
14 The LORD God {YHWH Elohim, Righteous Judge and Creator} said to the serpent, “Because you have done this {asita: willful action}, you are cursed more than all the livestock and more than every animal of the field. You will move on your belly and consume dust all the days of your life.”
15 And I will put enmity {eyvah: deep hostility} between you and the woman, and between your offspring {zera: continuing line} and her offspring; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.
16 To the woman He {Elohim, Righteous Judge} said, “I will greatly multiply your pain {itsavon: deep painful anguish} and your conception. In pain you will bring forth children. And your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.”
17 And to Adam He said, “Since you heeded your wife’s voice and ate from the tree that I {Elohim, Righteous Judge} commanded, saying, ‘You shall not eat from it,’ the ground {adamah: cultivated soil} is cursed on your account; by painful toil you will eat from it all the days of your life.”
18 It will cause thorns {qots: sharp piercing growths} and thistles to spring up for you, and you will eat the herb {esev: edible field plants} of the field.
19 You will eat bread by the sweat {zeat: painful toil} of your face until you return to the ground, because from it you were taken; for dust {afar: mortal frailty} you are, and to dust you will return.
20 And the man {haadam: first human} called the name of his wife Eve {chavvah: life bearer}, because she was the mother of all the living.
21 And the LORD God {YHWH Elohim, Merciful Provider} fashioned coverings {katnot: covering attire} from skins for Adam and for his wife, and He dressed them.
22 And the LORD God {YHWH Elohim, Holy Guardian} said, “Behold, the man {adam: representative human} has become like one of Us, to know good and evil; and now, lest he send forth his hand and also take from the tree of life, and eat, and live forever—”
23 Therefore the LORD God {YHWH Elohim, Righteous Judge} sent him out from the garden of Eden, to work the ground {adamah: cultivated earth} from which he had been taken.
24 So He {YHWH, Sovereign Judge} drove out the man, and at the east of the Garden of Eden He stationed the cherubim and a flaming sword that kept turning {mithapechet: ongoing motion}, to guard the way to the tree of life.
