1 The apostles and the brothers {adelphoi: spiritual family} throughout Judea learned that the Gentiles also had received the word of God {Theos, Welcoming Gentiles}.
2 But when Peter went up to Jerusalem, those of the circumcision {peritomes: Jewish-identity group} contended with him {diekrinonto: entered into dispute}.
3 They were saying, “You went in to men {andras: non-Jewish males} who are uncircumcised {akrobystia: outside covenant}, and you ate with them.”
4 But Peter {Petros: primary eyewitness} began and was explaining it to them in sequence {kathexes: orderly fashion}, saying,
5 I was in the city of Joppa praying, and in a trance {ekstasis: visionary state} I saw a vision, a certain vessel {skeuos: versatile container} descending like a great sheet being let down by four corners from heaven, and it came right up to me.
6 As I fixed my gaze {atenizo: intent focus} upon it, I was observing, and I saw the four-footed animals of the earth {ge: physical land}, and the wild beasts and the creeping things and the birds of the heaven.
7 But I also heard a voice saying to me, “Rise {anastas: stand up promptly}, Peter, kill and eat {phage: receive as food}.”
8 But I said, “By no means, Lord {kurios, Sovereign Master}, because nothing common {koinon: ritually defiling} or unclean has ever entered into my mouth.”
9 But a voice from heaven answered a second time, “What God {Theos, Divine Purifier} has made clean, you must not call common {koinos: ritually impure}.”
10 This took place three times {tris: repeated confirmation}, and then it all was drawn up again into heaven {ouranos: divine realm}.
11 And behold {idou: attention call}, immediately three men stood by at the house {oikia: dwelling place} in which we were, having been sent from Caesarea to me.
12 And the Spirit {pneuma, Mission Guide} said to me to go with them, making no distinction; and these six brothers also went with me, and we entered into the man's house {oikos: family residence}.
13 And he reported to us how he saw the angel {angelos: heavenly messenger} in his house, standing and saying, “Send {apostello: dispatch with authority} to Joppa and call for Simon, who is called Peter.”
14 Who will speak words {rhemata: spoken messages} to you, by which both you and your entire household {oikos: extended family group} will be saved.
15 And as I began to speak, the Holy Spirit {pneuma hagion, Guiding Presence} fell upon them, just as it also did upon us in the beginning {arche: initial outpouring}.
16 And I remembered the Lord’s {Kyrios, Faithful Promise-Giver} word that He had said, “John indeed baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit {pneuma hagion, Sanctifying Presence}.”
17 If therefore God {Theos, Sovereign Giver} gave the same gift {dorea: unearned favor} to them as also to us who have believed in the Lord Jesus Christ {Kyrios Iesous Christos, Saving Lord}, who was I to be able to hinder {koluo: hold back} God?
18 Upon hearing this, they fell silent and glorified God {Theos, Worthy Of Glory}, declaring that God has granted repentance {metanoia: changed mindset} unto life even to the Gentiles.
19 Those who had been scattered by the persecution {thlipsis: violent opposition} that arose in connection with Stephen made their way as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus, and Antioch, proclaiming the word {logos: gospel message} to no one but Jews.
20 But there were some of them, men from Cyprus and Cyrene, who, when they had come to Antioch, were also speaking to the Hellenists {Hellenistas: Greek-speaking hearers}, proclaiming the good news about the Lord Jesus {Kyrios Iesous, Central Savior Proclaimed}.
21 And the hand {kheir: active power} of the Lord {Kyrios, Empowering Lord} remained with them, and a great throng who had believed turned to the Lord.
22 But the report {logos: news account} about them was heard in the ears of the church {ekklēsia: gathered believers} that was in Jerusalem, and they sent Barnabas as far as Antioch.
23 Who, having arrived and having seen the grace of God {Theos, Gracious Source}, rejoiced, and he was exhorting everyone to remain with steadfast purpose of heart to the Lord {Kyrios, Faithful Master}.
24 For he was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit {pneuma hagion, Sanctifying Presence} and faith; and a considerable crowd was added to the Lord {Kyrios, Saving Lord}.
25 Then he went out to Tarsus to seek {anazetesai: search diligently} Saul {Saulos: later named Paul}.
26 And after he found him, he brought him to Antioch. And it happened that for a whole year they gathered in the church and taught a large crowd, and in Antioch the disciples {mathetas: devoted apprentices} were called Christians {Christianous: followers of Christos, Anointed Lord} for the first time.
27 In these days {hemerai: specific period}, prophets came down from Jerusalem to Antioch {Antiocheia: key mission base}.
28 And one of them, by name Agabus, having arisen, signaled through the Spirit {pneuma, Prophetic Source} that a great famine was going to come upon the entire inhabited world, which also happened during the days of Claudius {Klaudios: Roman emperor}.
29 The disciples {mathetes: devoted learners} resolved that each person, in line with his capacity, would send relief {diakonia: charitable aid} to the brothers living in Judea.
30 And they did so, sending it to the elders {presbyterous: leaders of the assembly} by the hand of Barnabas and Saul {Saulou: Later Named Paul}.
