1 Now there was a certain man in Caesarea {Kaisareia: coastal city} named Cornelius, a centurion from the cohort called Italian {Italikes: Roman military unit}.
2 A devout and God-fearing man with all his household, doing many acts of charity {eleemosynas: compassionate giving} to the people, and praying to God {Theos, Worthy Of Reverence} continually.
3 He saw clearly {phaneros: plainly visible} in a vision, about the ninth hour of the day, an angel of God {Theos, Sender Of Angels} coming in to him and saying to him, “Cornelius.”
4 But he, having looked intently {atenisas: fixed attention} at him and having become afraid, said, “What is it, Lord {Kyrios, Awe-Inspiring Master}?” And he said to him, “Your prayers and your alms have gone up for a memorial {mnemosynon: lasting remembrance} before God {Theos, Attentive Witness}.”
5 And now send men to Joppa {Ioppe: coastal city}, and send for a certain Simon who is called Peter {Petros: name meaning rock}.
6 This man is staying as a guest {xenizetai: received as visitor} with a certain Simon, a tanner {byrsei: leather craftsman}, whose house is by the sea.
7 But when the angel {angelos: heavenly messenger} who was speaking to him had departed, he called two of his household servants and a devout soldier from among those attending {proskartereo: steadfastly assisting} him.
8 And having explained {exegesamenos: gave full account} all things to them, he sent them to Joppa {Ioppen: coastal city}.
9 But on the next day, as they were traveling and approaching the city, Peter went up onto the housetop {doma: flat roof space} to pray about the sixth hour {hekte: midday prayer}.
10 But he became very hungry and was wishing to eat; while they were preparing {paraskeuazonton: meal preparation}, a trance {ekstasis: visionary state} came upon him.
11 And he saw the heaven {ouranos: celestial realm} having been opened, and a certain vessel {skeuos: sacred or common} descending, as a great sheet, being let down by its four corners upon the earth.
12 In it there were all the four-footed animals {tetrapoda: land creatures} and creeping things of the earth, and birds of the sky {ouranos: heavens, sky above}.
13 And a voice came to him, “Rise, Peter {Petros: trusted apostle}, kill {thuson: slaughter for food}, and eat.”
14 But Peter said, “By no means, Lord {Kyrios, Authoritative Lord}; for I have never eaten anything common {koinon: ritually profane} or unclean.”
15 And a voice again came to him a second time, “What God {Theos, Divine Purifier} has cleansed, you must not call common {koinou: ritually unclean}.”
16 And this happened three times {tris: repeated confirmation}, and immediately the vessel was taken up into heaven {ouranos: exalted heavenly realm}.
17 Now while Peter was perplexed in himself about what the vision {horama: revelatory sight} that he had seen might be, behold, the men who had been sent by Cornelius, having inquired for the house of Simon, stood at the gate {pylon: entrance gateway}.
18 And after calling out, they inquired whether Simon, who is called Peter {Petros: rock nickname}, is lodging here {xenizetai: guest stay}.
19 But while Peter was deeply pondering the vision, the Spirit {pneuma, Divine Revealer} said to him, “Behold, men are seeking {zetountes: actively searching} you.”
20 But having arisen, go down and go with them, doubting nothing, because I {Pneuma, Guiding Spirit} have sent {apestalka: completed commission} them.
21 But Peter {Petros: commissioned apostle}, having come down to the men, said, “Behold, I am the one whom you are seeking; what is the reason {aitia: underlying cause} for which you are present?”
22 And they said, “Cornelius, a centurion, a righteous man {dikaios: upright before God}, and one who fears God {Theos, Guiding Revealer}, being well spoken of also by the whole nation of the Jews, was directed by a holy angel to send for you into his house and to hear words from you.”
23 Therefore, having called {eiskalesamenos: invited inside} them in, he hosted {exenisen: showed hospitality} them. And on the next day, having risen, he went out with them, and some of the brothers from Joppa accompanied him.
24 And on the next day {epaurion: following morning} he entered into Caesarea, and Cornelius was expecting them, having called together his relatives and his close friends {anankaious: specially invited}.
25 And as Peter {Petros: Jewish apostolic envoy} was entering, Cornelius met him, fell at his feet, and worshipped {proskyneo: deep reverent bow} him.
26 But Peter {Petros, Chief Apostle} lifted him up, saying, “Stand up; I myself am also a man {anthropos: human being}.”
27 And while he was conversing {synomilon: speaking together} with him, he went in and found many people who had gathered together {synelylythotas: assembled group}.
28 And he said to them, “You yourselves know how it is unlawful for a Jewish man to associate with or to come to a foreigner; but God {Theos, Divine Instructor} has shown me that I should not call any person common {koinos: ritually profane} or unclean.”
29 Therefore I also came without objection {anantirretos: no resistance} when I was sent for, and so I ask for what reason {logos: underlying cause} you sent for me.
30 And Cornelius said, “From the fourth day until this hour, I was praying at the ninth hour in my house, and behold {idou: sudden attention}, a man stood before me in bright clothing {estheti: fine garment}.”
31 And he said, “Cornelius, your prayer {proseuche: earnest entreaty} has been heard, and your alms have been remembered before God {Theos, Attentive Listener}.”
32 Therefore send to Joppa and call for Simon who is called Peter. He is staying as a guest in the house of Simon the tanner {byrseos: worker in hides}, by the sea {thalassa: coastal area}.
33 Therefore, immediately I sent for you, and you have done well by coming. Now therefore, we all are present before God {Theos, Divine Witness} to hear all the things that have been commanded to you by the Lord {Kyrios, Sovereign Sender}.
34 But Peter opened his mouth and said, “Truly I understand that God {Theos, Impartial Judge} is not a respecter of persons {prosopolemptes: shows biased favor}.”
35 But in every nation, the one who fears Him {Theos, Impartial Judge} and works righteousness {dikaiosyne: upright standard} is acceptable to Him.
36 The word which He sent to the sons of Israel, proclaiming good news of peace through Jesus Christ {Iesous Christos, Bearer of Peace}—this One is Lord {Kyrios, Universal Ruler} of all.
37 You yourselves know the event {rhema: public report} that happened throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee after the baptism which John {Ioannes: prophetic herald} proclaimed.
38 Jesus {Iesous, Spirit-Anointed Savior} of Nazareth, how God {Theos, Giver of Power} anointed Him with the Holy Spirit {pneuma hagion, Sanctifying Presence} and with power, who went about doing good and healing all those who were oppressed by the devil, because God was with Him.
39 And we are witnesses of all things that He {Iesous, Crucified Lord} did in both the land of the Jews and in Jerusalem, whom they also put to death by hanging Him on a tree {xylon: execution wood}.
40 This One God {Theos, Resurrection Accomplisher} raised up on the third day and gave Him to become visible {emphanes: clearly seen}.
41 Not to all the people, but to witnesses {martys: confirming observers} who had been chosen beforehand by God {Theos, Sovereign Chooser}, to us who ate with Him and drank with Him after He rose from the dead.
42 And He {Iesous, Risen Lord} commanded us to proclaim to the people {laos: covenant community} and to testify {diamartyrasthai: solemnly witness} that this One is the One appointed by God {Theos, Appointing Father} as Judge of the living and the dead.
43 To Him {Iesous, Promised Messiah}, all the prophets bear witness that through His name, everyone who believes in Him receives forgiveness {aphesis: release from debt} of sins.
44 While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit {pneuma hagion, Divine Empowering Presence} fell upon all those who were hearing the word {logon: divine proclamation}.
45 And the believers {pistoi: steadfast followers} from among the circumcision were astonished, as many as had come with Peter, because even upon the Gentiles the gift of the Holy Spirit {Pneuma, Outpoured Presence} has been poured out.
46 For they were hearing them speaking in tongues and magnifying God {Theos, Worthy Of Praise}. Then Peter {Petros: Apostolic Witness} answered.
47 Can anyone withhold the water for baptizing these who have received the Holy Spirit {pneuma hagion: Boundary-Crossing Giver} just as we {hemeis: Jewish believers} have?
48 And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ {Iesous Christos, Redeemer King}; then they asked him to remain for some days {hemeras: counted time periods}.
