1 At that time the LORD {YHWH, Covenant Commander} spoke to me: “Shape for yourself two tablets {luchot: inscribed slabs} of stone like the first, then come up to Me on the mountain, and make for yourself an ark of wood.”
2 And I {YHWH, Divine Lawgiver} will write on the tablets the words {devarim: spoken commands} that were on the first tablets—those you broke—and you shall deposit them in the ark.
3 I made an ark {aron: cultic chest} of acacia wood, chiseled two stone tablets like the first ones, and went up the mountain {haharah: place of encounter} with the two tablets in my hand.
4 And He {YHWH, Covenant Lawgiver} inscribed on the tablets, just as before, the ten words {aseret: covenant principles} that the LORD had spoken to you on the mountain from the midst of the fire on the day of the assembly, and the LORD handed them to me.
5 Then I turned back and went down from the mountain, and I set the tablets {luchot: covenant tablets} in the ark that I had made; and they are there just as the LORD {YHWH, Covenant Giver} commanded me.
6 And the sons of Israel {yisrael: chosen people} journeyed from the wells {be'erot: spring sources} of Bene-Yaakan to Moserah; there Aaron died and was buried, and Eleazar his son ministered as priest in his place.
7 From there they journeyed to Gudgodah, and from Gudgodah they went on to Jotbathah, a land {eretz: region or territory} of water-filled streams {nachalei: seasonal watercourses}.
8 At that time, the LORD {YHWH, Divine Appointer} set apart the tribe of Levi to carry the ark of the covenant {berit: binding agreement} of the LORD, to stand before the LORD in service to Him, and to bless in His name, to this day.
9 Therefore, Levi had no portion or inheritance with his brothers; the LORD {YHWH, Inheritance Owner} is his inheritance {nachalah: allotted portion}, just as the LORD your God spoke to him.
10 And I remained on the mountain as in the first days for forty days and forty nights, and the LORD {YHWH, Merciful Listener} listened to me at that time as well; the LORD did not want {ava: will, consent} to destroy you.
11 Then the LORD {YHWH, Divine Commander} said to me, “Get up and go on the journey ahead of the people, so that they may enter and take possession of the land {eretz: covenant inheritance} that I swore to their fathers to give them.”
12 And now, Israel, what does the LORD your God {YHWH Eloheikha, Sovereign Covenant Partner} require of you except to fear the LORD your God, to walk in all His ways, to love Him, and to serve the LORD your God with all your heart {levav: innermost devotion} and with all your soul.
13 Keep the commandments of the LORD {YHWH, Covenant Lawgiver} and His statutes {khukotav: prescribed regulations} that I am commanding you today, for your good.
14 Observe that the heavens {hashamayim: visible skies}—even the heaven of heavens—the earth, and everything in them are the possession of the LORD your God {YHWH Eloheicha, Universal Sovereign}.
15 Only in your fathers did the LORD {YHWH, Covenant Chooser} set His affection {khashaq: deep attachment} and love, and He chose their descendants after them—you—from all the nations, as it is this day.
16 Therefore, circumcise the foreskin of your hearts {levavkhem: inner self}, and do not harden your necks {vearpkhem: stubborn resistance} any longer.
17 For the LORD your God {YHWH Eloheikhem, Impartial Ruler} is the God over all gods and the Lord over all lords, the great God, the mighty and the awe-inspiring, who does not show partiality {panim: lifted faces} and does not accept a bribe.
18 He {YHWH, Righteous Judge} brings justice for the orphan and the widow, and He loves the sojourner {ger: resident alien}, giving him bread {lechem: staple food} and clothing.
19 And you shall love the foreigner {ger: resident alien}, for you were foreigners yourselves in the land of Egypt {Mitsrayim: land of bondage}.
20 You shall fear the LORD your God {YHWH Eloheikha, Covenant Sovereign}; you shall serve Him, adhere {tidbaq: close allegiance} to Him, and swear by His name.
21 He is your praise {tehillah: source of adoration}, and He is your God {Eloheikha, Covenant Redeemer}, who has performed for you these great things and these fearsome wonders that your eyes have seen.
22 Your fathers went down into Egypt as seventy persons, and now the LORD your God {YHWH Eloheikha, Faithful Multiplier} has made you like the stars of the heavens for abundance {la-rov: exceeding multitude}.
