1 Then we turned and took the road up toward Bashan {bashan: elevated region}, and Og, the king of Bashan, came out to meet us with all his people, to fight at Edrei {Edrei: fortress city}.
2 And the LORD {YHWH, Divine Commander} said to me, “Do not fear {tira: recoil with awe} him, for I have placed him, all his people, and his land into your hand, and you shall deal with him as you dealt with Sihon king of the Amorites who dwells in Heshbon.”
3 So the LORD our God {YHWH Eloheinu, Covenant Warrior} gave Og, king of Bashan, and all his people into our hand, and we struck him down until no survivor {sarid: remaining alive} was left to him.
4 At that time we took all his cities; there was not a single city that escaped us—sixty cities, the whole region of Argob, the kingdom of Og {Og: Ruler of Rephaim} in Bashan {Bashan: fertile northern land}.
5 All these cities were fortified with a high wall {khomah: city-encompassing barrier}, gates, and bars; apart from them there were many open towns {haperazi: unwalled settlements}.
6 And we devoted them to destruction, just as we had done to Sihon king of Heshbon—devoting to destruction {hacherem: complete sacrificial ban} every city: men {metim: adult males}, the women, and the children.
7 But we took for ourselves all the livestock {behemah: domesticated animal} and the spoil from the cities as plunder {baza: thorough seizure}.
8 At that time we took the land {ha’aretz: territory acquired} from the two Amorite kings {ha’emôri: Canaanite inhabitants} who were on the east side of the Jordan, from the Valley of Arnon up to Mount Hermon.
9 Hermon is called Sirion by the Sidonians, while the Amorites {Emori: hill dwellers} call it Senir {Senir: pointed peak}.
10 We took every city of the plateau, all Gilead, and all Bashan, reaching as far as Salekah and Edrei—cities of the kingdom {mamlekhet: dominion area} of Og {og: Bashanite ruler} in Bashan.
11 For only Og, king of Bashan, remained from the remnant of the Rephaim {rephaim: giant clan}. Behold, his bedstead—an iron bed—is it not in Rabbah of the children of Ammon? Its length is nine cubits {amot: ancient measurement, about 13.5 feet/4.1 meters}, and its width four cubits by the cubit of a man.
12 From this land {aretz: territorial inheritance} that we took at that time—from Aroer by the wadi of Arnon and including half the hill country of Gilead with its towns—I assigned it to the Reubenite {re’uveni: tribal ancestor} and to the Gadite.
13 And the rest of Gilead, along with all of Bashan, the kingdom of Og, I gave to the half-tribe of Manasseh. All the region of Argob {argov: highland district}—that whole Bashan—is called the land of the Rephaim {refaim: ancient giants}.
14 Jair, son of Manasseh, took all the region of Argob as far as the border of the Geshurite and the Maacathite; and he called them by his own name, Bashan-havvoth-jair {chavvot: encampments}, as it is to this day {hayom: ongoing legacy}.
15 And to Makir {makir: tribal chief} I granted {natati: legal grant} Gilead.
16 And to the Reubenite and to the Gadite I gave from Gilead down to the Valley of Arnon, with the middle of the valley as the boundary {gevul: fixed territorial limit}, and up to the Jabbok River, the boundary of the sons of Ammon {benei ammon: Ammonite descendants}.
17 And the Arabah {aravah: rift valley plain}, with the Jordan as the border, extended from Kinneret to the Sea of the Arabah—the Salt Sea—beneath the slopes of Pisgah {pisgah: summit peak}, to the east.
18 And I commanded you at that time, saying, “The LORD your God {YHWH Eloheikhem, Covenant Commander} has granted you this land as a possession; your armed men {khalutzim: those prepared for battle} shall cross over ahead of your brothers, the sons of Israel, each man of valor.”
19 Only your wives, your young children, and your livestock—I know that you have much livestock {mikneh: domesticated animals}—shall remain in the towns {areikhem: fortified settlements} that I have given you.
20 Until the LORD {YHWH, Faithful Promise-Keeper} gives rest to your brothers, as He gave it to you, and they also take possession of the land that the LORD your God is giving them across the Jordan—then each man shall return to the inheritance {yerushah: allotted territory} I have given you.
21 And I charged Joshua at that time, saying, “Your eyes have seen all that the LORD your God {YHWH Eloheikhem, Covenant Warrior} did to these two kings; in the same way the LORD will do to every kingdom {mamlakhot: fortified realms} into which you are crossing over.”
22 You shall not fear them, for the LORD your God {YHWH Eloheikhem: Divine Warrior}—He is the one fighting {nilcham: actively contending in battle} for you.
23 And at that time {ba’et hahi: precise moment} I pleaded with the LORD {YHWH, Petition Receiver}, saying:
24 O Lord GOD {Adonai YHWH, Supreme Sovereign}, You have begun to let Your servant {eved: devoted attendant} see Your greatness and Your mighty hand. For what god is there in heaven or on earth who can do works like Yours and mighty acts like Yours?
25 Let me, please, cross over so I may see the good land {ha’aretz: promised territory} that is beyond the Jordan—this good mountain {har: elevated place} and Lebanon.
26 But the LORD {YHWH, Disciplinary Judge} was angry with me on account of you, and He did not listen {shama‘: heed or pay attention} to me. And the LORD said to me, “It is enough for you; do not continue speaking to Me about this matter.”
27 Go up to the summit of Pisgah and lift your eyes {einekha: physical perspective} toward the west, the north, the south, and the east; look with your own eyes, for you will not cross this Jordan {ha-yarden: boundary river}.
28 But command Joshua {yehoshua: appointed successor}, strengthen him {chazkehu: instilling inner resolve} and encourage him, for he will cross over at the head of this people, and he will cause them to inherit the land that you will see.
29 So we stayed in the valley {gai: low-lying region} opposite the house of Peor {peor: pagan sanctuary}.
