1 When the LORD your God {YHWH Eloheikha, Covenant Fulfiller} ushers you into the land {ha’aretz: inheritance territory} you are to inherit and expels many nations before you—the Hittites, the Girgashites, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites—seven nations larger and stronger than you.
2 And when the LORD your God {YHWH Eloheikha, Divine Warrior} hands them over to you, and you strike them down {hikitam: defeat utterly}, you must utterly devote them to destruction. You shall not cut a covenant with them, and you shall not show them mercy.
3 And you shall not intermarry {titkhatten: form marital alliances} with them; you shall not give {lo-titten: arrange marriage} your daughter to his son, and you shall not take his daughter for your son.
4 For they will turn away your son from following Me, and they will serve other gods; then the anger {af: burning wrath} of the LORD {YHWH, Covenant Enforcer} will burn against you, and He will destroy you quickly.
5 Instead, this is what you shall do to them: Pull down their altars {mizbechot: places of sacrifice}, smash their standing stones, cut down their Asherim {asherah: sacred poles}, and burn their idols in the fire.
6 For you are a holy people to the LORD your God {YHWH Eloheicha, Covenant Guardian}. The LORD your God has chosen you to belong to Him as His treasured possession {segulah: unique inheritance} from among all the peoples on the face of the earth.
7 It was not because you outnumbered any of the peoples that the LORD {YHWH, Covenant-Chooser} set His affection {khashaq: deep attachment} on you and chose you; rather, you were the fewest of all the peoples.
8 But because of the love of the LORD {YHWH, Faithful Redeemer} for you and because of His keeping the oath {shavuah: solemn pledge} that He swore to your fathers, the LORD brought you out with a strong hand and redeemed you from the house of slaves, from the hand of Pharaoh the king of Egypt.
9 Therefore know that the LORD your God {YHWH Eloheikha, Covenant Keeper} is God—the Faithful One—who keeps the covenant and steadfast love {chesed: loyal devotion} with those who love Him and keep His commandments, for a thousand generations.
10 And He {YHWH, Righteous Judge} repays those who hate Him to their face {pānāw: direct confrontation}, to bring them to ruin; He will not delay—He will repay the one who hates Him to his face.
11 Therefore you shall keep the commandment, the statutes {chukim: binding ordinances}, and the judgments that I {YHWH, Covenant Commander} am commanding you today to carry out.
12 And it will happen that, if you listen to these judgments {mishpatim: legal judgments} and keep them and do them, the LORD your God {YHWH Eloheicha, Covenant Keeper} will uphold for you the covenant and the lovingkindness which He swore to your fathers.
13 He {YHWH, Faithful Covenant Keeper} will love you, bless you, and multiply you; He will bless the offspring of your womb {beten: physical offspring} and the produce of your land—grain, new wine, and oil—as well as the increase of your herds and the young of your flock in the land He swore to your fathers to give you.
14 You will be blessed above all the peoples {amim: ethnic groups}; there will not be a barren man or woman among you, nor among your livestock {behemah: domesticated animals}.
15 And the LORD {YHWH, Source of Healing} will remove from you every sickness and all the evil diseases of Egypt that you have known; He will not place any upon you but will put them on all your haters {soneekha: adversaries}.
16 And you shall consume all the peoples whom the LORD your God {YHWH Eloheikha, Covenant Warrior} gives to you; you shall not show pity for them or serve their gods, for this is a snare {mokesh: cause of downfall} for you.
17 If you say in your heart, “These nations are greater {rabbim: numerous and powerful} than I; how can I dispossess {lehorisham: causative taking of possession} them?”
18 You shall not fear them; be sure to remember what the LORD your God {YHWH eloheikha, Covenant Defender} did to Pharaoh and to all {kol: totality} Egypt.
19 The great trials {hammasot: testings} your eyes saw, along with the signs and the wonders and the strong hand and the outstretched arm by which the LORD your God {YHWH Eloheikha, Deliverer} brought you out—so the LORD your God will deal with all the peoples whom you fear.
20 And also the LORD your God {YHWH Elohekha, Divine Warrior and Judge} will send the hornet {hatsirah: stinging agent} among them until the survivors and those hiding from you are consumed.
21 You must not be terrified {ta’arots: be shaken with fear} before them, for the LORD your God {YHWH Eloheikha, Mighty Defender} is in your midst—a great and awesome God.
22 And the LORD your God {YHWH Eloheikha, Covenant Defender} will drive out these nations from before you little by little; you will not be able to consume them quickly, lest the wild beasts {chayat: wild creatures} increase upon you.
23 But the LORD your God {YHWH Eloheikha, Personal Covenant God} will deliver them into your hands, and He will overwhelm them with utter confusion {mehumah: complete disarray} until they are destroyed.
24 And He {YHWH, Divine Warrior} will give their kings into your hand, and you will wipe out their name {shemam: reputation} from under the heavens. No man will be able to stand before you until you have destroyed them.
25 You shall burn the idols of their gods in the fire. You shall not covet the silver or the gold upon them, and you shall not take it for yourself, lest you be ensnared by it, for it is an abomination {toavat: detestable thing} to the LORD your God {YHWH Eloheikha, Covenant Guardian}.
26 You shall not bring a detestable thing {toevah: LORD-rejected object} into your house; otherwise you will become devoted to destruction {cherem: complete removal} like it. You shall utterly detest it and utterly abhor it, for it is devoted to destruction.
