1 And this is the commandment, the statutes, and the judgments that the LORD your God {YHWH Eloheichem, Covenant Instructor} commanded to teach you to do in the land {aretz: promised territory} that you are crossing over to possess.
2 So that you may fear the LORD your God {YHWH Eloheikha, Covenant King} by keeping all his statutes {chukotav: binding decrees} and his commandments that I command you— you, your son, and your grandson— all the days of your life, and so that your days may be prolonged.
3 Hear, Israel, and be careful to do {shamar: diligently keep}, so that it will be well for you and you will increase greatly, just as the LORD God of your fathers {YHWH Elohei avoteikha, Covenant-Keeping Provider} has promised you—a land flowing with milk and honey.
4 Hear, O Israel: The LORD {YHWH, Covenant King} is our God {Eloheinu: Mighty One}; the LORD is one.
5 You are to love the LORD your God {YHWH Elohekha, Covenant Lord} with your whole heart {levav: inner self}, with your whole soul, and with all your strength.
6 These words that I {Moses: Covenant Messenger} command you today are to reside in your heart {levav: inner being}.
7 You shall teach {shinantam: engrave deeply} these commands to your children, and you shall speak {dibarta: proclaim boldly} of them when you sit within your home, when you walk along the road, when you lie down, and when you rise up.
8 Bind them as a sign {ot: symbolic mark} on your hand, and let them be as frontlets {totafot: bands for reminder} between your eyes.
9 Write them on the doorposts {mezuzot: entrance markers} of your house and on your gates {she’arim: boundary openings}.
10 And it shall be, when the LORD your God {YHWH Eloheikha, Covenant Promise-Keeper} brings you into the land which He swore to your fathers—to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob—to give to you: cities great and good, which you did not build {banita: establish}.
11 And houses filled with all good things {kol-tuv: abundant provision} which you did not fill, and cisterns hewn out {chatzuvim: laboriously carved} which you did not dig, and vineyards and olive trees which you did not plant; then you will eat and be satisfied.
12 Guard yourself {hishamer: maintain alertness}, lest you forget the LORD {YHWH, Covenant Redeemer} who delivered you from the land of Egypt and from the house of slavery.
13 You shall fear the LORD your God {YHWH Eloheikha, Covenant Keeper}; you shall serve Him {ta’avod: wholehearted devotion}; and you shall swear by His name.
14 You shall not go after other gods {elohim: false deities} or any gods of the nations {ammim: surrounding peoples} that surround you.
15 For the LORD your God {YHWH Eloheikha, Jealous Enforcer} is a jealous God in your midst; lest the anger {aph: divine wrath} of the LORD your God be kindled against you, and He will destroy you from upon the face of the ground.
16 You shall not test the LORD your God {YHWH Eloheichem, Covenant Guardian} as you tested Him at Massah {ba-massah: place of trial}.
17 You must diligently keep the commandments of the LORD your God {YHWH Eloheikhem, Covenant Lawgiver}, together with His testimonies {edotav: covenantal witnesses} and His statutes which He has commanded you.
18 And you shall do what is right {yashar: uprightness} and good in the eyes of the LORD {YHWH, Promise-Keeper}, so that it may go well for you, and you may come and possess the good land which the LORD swore to your fathers.
19 To drive out all your enemies from before you, just as the LORD {YHWH, Covenant Promise-Keeper} spoke {diber: declared with authority}.
20 When your son asks you in the future, saying, “What are the testimonies {edot: covenantal witnesses} and the statutes and the judgments that the LORD our God {YHWH Eloheinu, Covenant Instructor} has commanded you?”
21 And you shall say to your son, “We were slaves to Pharaoh in Egypt, but the LORD {YHWH, Mighty Deliverer} brought us out from Egypt with a strong hand {yad: symbol of power}.”
22 And the LORD {YHWH, Sign-Giver} brought signs and wonders—great {gedolim: mighty works} and terrible—on Egypt, on Pharaoh, and on all his household, before our eyes.
23 And He {YHWH, Covenant Keeper} brought us out from there in order to bring us in and give us the land {eretz: promised inheritance} which He swore to our fathers.
24 And the LORD {YHWH, Covenant Lawgiver} commanded us to do all these statutes {chukkim: enacted decrees}, to fear the LORD our God, for our good all the days, to keep us alive as it is today.
25 And righteousness {ts’dakah: covenant fidelity} will be counted for us if we diligently do this whole commandment before the LORD our God {YHWH Eloheinu, Covenant Lawgiver}, as He has commanded us.
