1 And you, being dead in your trespasses {paraptomasin: wrongful acts} and sins {hamartiais: offenses against God},
2 In which you formerly walked according to the age {aion: present world-order} of this world, according to the ruler {archon: hostile spiritual leader} of the authority of the air, of the spirit now working in the sons of disobedience.
3 Among whom also we all formerly lived in the desires of our flesh, doing the wills of the flesh and of the minds, and we were by nature children of wrath {orge: Righteous Judgment}, just as also the others {loipoi: remaining people}.
4 But God {Theos, Rich in Mercy}, being rich in mercy, because of the great love {agape: covenant devotion} with which He loved us,
5 And even when we were dead in our trespasses, He made us alive together with Christ {Christos, Resurrection Giver}—by grace {charis: unearned favor} you have been saved.
6 And He {Theos, Gracious Lifegiver} raised us up together and seated us together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus {Christos Iesous, Exalted Messiah}.
7 So that in the coming ages He {Theos, Sovereign Demonstrator} might show the surpassing riches of His grace {charis: overflowing favor} in kindness toward us, in Christ Jesus {Christos Iesous, Gracious Mediator}.
8 For by grace {chariti: unearned favor} you are saved through faith, and this is not from yourselves; it is the gift of God {Theos, Merciful Giver}.
9 Not from works {ergon: human deeds}, so that no one may boast {kauchesetai: self-centered pride}.
10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus {Christos Iesous, Life-Giving Mediator} for good works, which God {Theos, Sovereign Planner} prepared beforehand so that we might walk in them.
11 Therefore remember that formerly you, the Gentiles {ethne: non-Jewish nations} in the flesh, the ones called “Uncircumcision” by what is called “Circumcision” in the flesh made by hands {cheiropoietos: human workmanship}.
12 That you were at that time without Christ {Christos, Rejected Messiah}, having been alienated from the commonwealth {politeia: covenant citizenship} of Israel, and strangers to the covenants of the promise, having no hope, and godless in the world.
13 But now in Christ Jesus {Iesous Christos, Reconciler Of Peoples} you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood {haima: sacrificial offering} of Christ.
14 For He Himself {Christos, Personal Peacemaker} is our peace {eirene: reconciled wholeness}, the One who made both into one and, having broken down the dividing wall of the partition, the hostility, in His flesh.
15 By abolishing the law of commandments expressed in ordinances, so that He {Christos, Reconciling Mediator} might create the two in Himself into one new man, making peace {eirene: restored harmony}.
16 And He {Christos, Reconciling Lord} might reconcile both in one body to God {Theos, Receiving Father} through the cross, and by it put the enmity {echthra: state of hostility} to death.
17 And having come, He {Christos, Proclaimer Of Peace} proclaimed good news of peace to you who were far off {makran: distant outsiders} and peace to those who were near.
18 For through Him {Christos, Reconciling Mediator} we both have access in one Spirit {pneuma, Indwelling Unifier} to the Father {Pater, Approachable Father}.
19 Therefore then, you are no longer strangers {xenoi: covenant outsiders} and sojourners, but you are fellow-citizens with the saints and household members of God {Theos, Community Creator}.
20 Having been built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus {Christos Iesous, Unifying Cornerstone} Himself being the chief cornerstone {akrogoniaios: primary joining stone}.
21 In whom all the building, being joined together, grows {auxei: increases in stature} into a holy temple in the Lord {Kyrios, Sphere of Holiness}.
22 In whom {Christos, Uniting Cornerstone} you also are being built together into a dwelling place {katoiketerion: spiritual sanctuary} for God {Theos, Indwelling Lord} in the Spirit {pneuma, Holy Builder}.
