1 Therefore I, the prisoner in the Lord {Kyrios, Master I Serve}, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling {klesis: divine summons} to which you were called.
2 With all humility {tapeinophrosyne: lowliness of mind} and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love {agape: self-giving affection}.
3 Being eager to keep the unity of the Spirit {pneuma, Unifying Presence} in the bond {syndesmos: binding connection} of peace.
4 There is one body and one Spirit {Pneuma, Unifying Presence}, just as you also were called in one hope {elpis: confident expectation} of your calling.
5 One Lord {Kyrios, Unifying Sovereign}, one faith {pistis: shared trust}, one baptism.
6 One God {Theos, All-Encompassing Lord} and Father {Pater: Tender Guardian} of all, who is over all and through all and in all.
7 But to each one of us grace {charis: unearned favor} was given according to the measure of the gift of Christ {Christos, Giver of Grace}.
8 Therefore He {Christos, Exalted Giver} says, “Having ascended on high, He led captivity captive and gave gifts to men {anthropois: all people}.”
9 Now the expression “He {Christos, Descended Redeemer} ascended”—what does it mean except that He also descended into the lower parts of the earth {ge: terrestrial realm}?
10 He {Christos, Exalted Ascender} who descended is Himself also the One who ascended far above all the heavens, so that He might fill all things {panta: entire creation}.
11 And He {Christos, Wise Gift Giver} Himself gave some as apostles, some as prophets, some as evangelists, and some as shepherds and teachers {didaskaloi: instructors in doctrine}.
12 For the equipping {katartismon: thorough preparation} of the saints for the work of ministry, for the building up of the body of Christ {Christos, Exalted Head}.
13 Until we all attain to the unity of the faith {pisteos: steadfast trust} and of the knowledge of the Son of God {huiou tou theou, Exalted Son}, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ {Christou, Perfect Standard}.
14 So that we may no longer be children {nēpios: spiritually immature}, being tossed by waves and carried about by every wind of teaching, by the trickery of men, in craftiness directed toward the scheming of deception {planē: misleading error}.
15 But, speaking the truth in love {agape: self-giving care}, let us grow in all things into Him who is the head, Christ {Christos, Guiding Head}.
16 From Him {Christos, Life-Giving Head} the whole body {soma: united congregation}, being joined and held together through every supporting joint of supply, according to the working in the measure of each individual part, produces the growth of the body for the building up of itself in love.
17 This therefore I say and testify in the Lord {Kyrios, Divine Authority}, that you no longer walk as also the Gentiles walk, in the futility of their mind {nous: moral reasoning core}.
18 Being darkened in their understanding, they are alienated from the life of God {Theos, Personal Life-Giver} because of the ignorance {agnoia: moral blindness} that is in them, because of the hardness of their heart.
19 They, having become callous {apelgekotes: hardened in heart}, gave themselves over to sensuality for the practice of every kind of impurity in greed {pleonexia: insatiable desire}.
20 But you did not learn Christ {Christos, Pattern of Life} in this way {houtos: former lifestyle}.
21 If indeed you have heard about Him {Iesous, Revealing Lord} and were taught in Him, just as the truth {aletheia: reality as it truly is} is in Jesus.
22 That you put off, with respect to your former way of life, the old self {anthropos: old sinful nature}, which is being corrupted according to the desires of deceit {apate: moral falsehood}.
23 And to be renewed in the spirit {pneuma: inner principle} of your mind {nous: perception, understanding}.
24 And to put on the new man, who has been created according to God {Theos, Holy Creator}, in righteousness {dikaiosyne: transformed conduct} and holiness of the truth.
25 Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one speak the truth with his neighbor {plesion: one who is near}, because we are members of one another {mele: individually connected parts}.
26 Be angry, and do not sin. Do not let the sun {helios: daily limit} set on your anger {parorgismos: provoked irritation}.
27 And do not give place {topos: opportunity to act} to the devil {diabolos: hostile slanderer}.
28 The one who steals must steal no longer, but rather must labor {kopiato: diligent effort}, working with his own hands at what is good, so that he may have something to share with the one in need {chreian ekhonti: who lacks}.
29 Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but only what is good for building up {oikodome: spiritual strengthening} as fits the need, that it may give grace {charis: unearned favor} to those who hear.
30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God {Pneuma Hagion tou Theou, Divine Sealer}, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption {apolutrosis: complete liberation}.
31 Let all bitterness {pikria: resentful spirit}, wrath, anger, clamor, and slander be removed from you, along with all malice {kakia: harmful ill will}.
32 Become kind to one another, tenderhearted and forgiving one another, just as God {Theos, Gracious Forgiver} in Christ {Christos, Reconciling Savior} graciously forgave you.
