1 The Pharisees and Sadducees approached, and as a test they asked Him{Iesous, Questioned Messiah} to present to them a sign{semeion: confirming evidence} from heaven.
2 He {Iesous, Discerning Instructor} answered them, “When evening comes, you say, ‘It will be fair, because the sky is red {purrazei: shows a reddish color}.’”
3 And in the morning you say, “Today there will be a storm, for the sky is red and threatening.” You know how to interpret the appearance {prosopon: visible surface} of the sky, but you are not able to interpret the signs {semeia: indicative events} of the times.
4 An evil and adulterous generation keeps looking for a sign, but no sign will be granted to it except the sign of Jonah {Iona: Prophet Sign-Bearer}; and after leaving them, He {Iesous, Righteous Judge} went away.
5 When the disciples {mathetai: devoted learners} crossed to the opposite shore, they failed to bring any bread {artous: grain loaves}.
6 Jesus {Iesous, Protective Teacher} said to them, “Keep watch and be on guard against the leaven {zume: corrupting teaching} of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”
7 They were reasoning {dielogizonto: inwardly debating} with one another, saying, “It is because we did not bring loaves {artous: ordinary flat bread}.”
8 But Jesus {Iesous, Perceptive Teacher}, knowing it, said, “Why are you debating among yourselves, you of little faith {oligopistoi: insufficient trust}, about not having loaves?”
9 Do you still not understand {noeo: grasp inwardly}, and do you not remember the five loaves {artos: plain loaves} for the five thousand, and how many baskets you picked up?
10 Or the seven loaves {artos: bread provision} for the four thousand, and how many baskets {spyris: surplus holders} did you pick up?
11 How can you not understand that I {Iesous, Patient Instructor} was not speaking to you about bread, but that you must beware of the leaven {zyme: corrupting teaching} of the Pharisees and Sadducees?
12 Then they understood that He {Iesous, Patient Instructor} was not telling them to guard against leaven in bread, but against the teaching {didache: corrupt doctrine} of the Pharisees and Sadducees.
13 When Jesus {Iesous, Teacher of Truth} came to the regions of Caesarea Philippi, He continued asking His disciples, “Who do people {anthropoi: general humanity} say the Son of Man is?”
14 But they replied, “Some {men: contrasted party} say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and yet others {heteroi: separate group} say Jeremiah, or one of the prophets.”
15 He {Iesous, Questioning Messiah} said to them, “But you {hymeis: personally addressed}—who do you say that I am?”
16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ {Christos, Promised King}, the Son of the living God {Theos, Ever-Living Source}.”
17 And Jesus {Iesous, Revealing Messiah} answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father {pater, Heavenly Revealer} who is in the heavens.”
18 And I {Iesous: Divine Speaker} tell you that you are Peter {Petros: rock name}, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it.
19 I {Iesous, Giver of Authority} will entrust to you the keys {kleis: entrusted stewardship} of the kingdom of the heavens; whatever you bind on earth will have been bound in the heavens, and whatever you loose on earth will have been loosed in the heavens.
20 Then He {Christos, Revealed Messiah} gave the disciples {mathetes: committed learners} strict instructions that they were to tell no one that He is the Christ.
21 From that time Jesus {Iesous, Messiah Teacher} began to make it clear to His disciples {mathetes: devoted learners} that it was necessary for Him to go to Jerusalem, to suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, to be killed, and to be raised on the third day.
22 And Peter {Petros: impetuous disciple} took Him aside and began to rebuke Him, saying, “Far be it from You, Lord {Kyrie, honored Master}; this shall never happen to You.”
23 But He {Iesous, Firm Rebuker} turned and said to Peter, “Go behind Me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to Me, because you are not mindful of the things of God {theos, Sovereign Planner}, but of the things of people.”
24 Then Jesus {Iesous, Teacher of Discipleship} said to His disciples, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, take up his cross {stauron: Roman execution stake}, and follow Me.”
25 For whoever desires to save his life {psuche: whole self} will lose it; but whoever loses his life for My {Iesous, Supreme Worth} sake will find it.
26 For what will a man gain if he obtains the whole world {kosmos: created order} but forfeits his soul {psuche: life core}? Or what will a man offer in exchange for his soul?
27 For the Son of Man {huios tou anthropou, Coming Judge} is about to come in the glory of His Father {Pater, Glorious Source} with His angels, and then He will reward each person according to his deed.
28 Truly, I say to you, some standing here will certainly not taste {geuomai: experience death} of death until they see the Son of Man {huios tou anthropou: Glorious King} coming in His kingdom.
