1 Then Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus {Iesous, Questioned Rabbi} from Jerusalem {Hierosolymon: religious center}, saying,
2 “Why do your {Iesous, Questioned Teacher} disciples transgress the tradition {paradosin: inherited customs} of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat bread.”
3 But He answered and said to them, “Why do you also transgress the commandment {entolen: binding directive} of God {Theos, Law-Giving Judge} for the sake of your tradition?”
4 For God {Theos, Divine Lawgiver} said, “Honor your father and your mother” {tima: show deep respect}, and, “Whoever speaks evil of father or mother, let him die by death.”
5 But you say, "Whoever says to his father or to his mother, 'Whatever you might have been benefited {opheletheis: practical help} from Me is a gift {doron: vowed offering},'"
6 He absolutely will not honor his father, and you have nullified the word of God {Theos, Supreme Lawgiver} because of your tradition {paradosin: received practice}.
7 Hypocrites, Isaiah {Esaias: Prophetic Messenger} prophesied well concerning you, saying {legon: introducing prophetic citation}:
8 This people honors Me {Theos, True Recipient Of Worship} with their lips {cheilesin: outward speech}, but their heart is far away from Me.
9 But in vain do they worship Me {Theos, True Recipient Of Worship}, teaching as doctrines {didaskalia: binding religious instruction} the commandments of men.
10 And after calling the crowd {ochlos: gathered listeners} to Himself, He {Iesous, Guiding Teacher} said to them, “Listen and understand.”
11 What enters {eiserchomenon: inward movement} the mouth does not defile the person, but what emerges {ekporeuomenon: outward flow} from the mouth defiles the person.
12 Then the disciples came and said to Him {Iesous, Questioned Teacher}, "Do You know that the Pharisees {Pharisaioi: strict religious group} were offended after hearing the word?"
13 But He {Iesous, Righteous Judge} answered and said, “Every plant that My heavenly Father {ho pater mou ho ouranios, Sovereign Planter} has not planted will be uprooted.”
14 Leave them alone; they are blind {typhloi: spiritually unaware} guides {hodegoi: unfit leaders} of the blind. If a blind person leads a blind person, both will fall into a pit.
15 But Peter answered and said to Him {Iesous, Patient Teacher}, “Explain the parable {parabole: symbolic story} to us.”
16 But He {Iesous, Discerning Teacher} said, “Are you also still without understanding {asynetoi: lacking spiritual insight}?”
17 Do you not understand that everything entering into the mouth goes into the stomach {koilia: inner body} and is cast out into the latrine {aphedron: waste outlet}?
18 But the things that come out from the mouth come forth from the heart {kardia: inner self}, and these defile the person {anthropos: human being}.
19 For out of the heart {kardia: inner core} come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, sexual immoralities, thefts, false testimonies, and blasphemies {blasphemia: irreverent speech}.
20 These are the things that defile a person; but to eat with unwashed {aniptois: not ritually washed} hands does not defile {koinounta: make ritually unclean} a person.
21 And Jesus {Iesous, Withdrawn Messiah} went out from there and withdrew into the districts {mere: surrounding region} of Tyre and Sidon.
22 And behold, a Canaanite woman from those regions came out and was crying out, saying, “Have mercy on me, Lord {Kyrios, Approached Deliverer}, Son of David {huios Dauid, Promised King}; my daughter is badly {kakos: with severe torment} demon-possessed.”
23 But He {Iesous, Testing Faith} did not answer her a word, and His disciples {mathetai: devoted learners} came and kept asking Him, saying, “Send her away, for she is crying out after us.”
24 But He {Iesous, Shepherd to Israel} answered and said, “I was not sent except to the lost sheep of the house {oikos: covenant household} of Israel.”
25 But she, having come {elthousa: completed arrival}, was bowing down before Him, saying, “Lord {Kyrios, Worthy of Worship}, help me.”
26 But He {Iesous, Wise Faith Tester} answered and said, “It is not right to take the bread of the children and to throw it to the little dogs {kynaria: household pets}.”
27 But she said, “Yes, Lord {Kyrios, Merciful Healer}; for even the little dogs eat from the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table {trapeza: eating surface}.”
28 Then Jesus {Iesous, Merciful Healer} answered and said to her, “O woman, great is your faith {pistis: trustful confidence}; let it be done for you as you desire.” And her daughter was healed from that hour.
29 And Jesus {Iesous, Purposeful Traveler}, having departed from there, came beside the sea of Galilee, and having gone up into the mountain, He was sitting there {ekatheto: seated in readiness}.
30 And many crowds came to Him {Iesous, Compassionate Healer}, having with themselves those who were mute, blind, lame, maimed, and many others; and they cast them beside His feet, and He healed {etherapeusen: made whole} them.
31 So that the crowd marveled, seeing the mute speaking, the maimed {kyllous: physically disabled} made whole, the lame walking, and the blind seeing; and they glorified the God of Israel {Theos Israel, Covenant Healer}.
32 But Jesus {Iesous, Compassionate Teacher}, having called His disciples, said, “I have compassion upon the crowd {ochlos: large gathering}, because they have already remained with Me three days and do not have anything that they might eat. And I do not want to send them away fasting, lest they might faint on the way.”
33 And the disciples said to Him {Iesous, Approached Teacher}, “From where can we get so many loaves in the wilderness {eremia: isolated region}, so as to satisfy so great a crowd?”
34 And Jesus {Iesous, Caring Provider} said to them, “How many loaves do you have?” They said, “Seven, and a few small fish {ichthydia: very small fish}.”
35 And after He {Iesous, Compassionate Provider} commanded the crowd {ochlos: assembled multitude} to recline on the ground.
36 He {Iesous, Compassionate Provider} took the seven loaves and fish, and after giving thanks {eucharistesas: reverent gratitude}, He broke them and began handing them to the disciples, and the disciples passed them on to the crowds.
37 And they all ate {ephagon: partook of food} and were satisfied {echortasthesan: completely filled}, and they took up the surplus of the fragments, seven baskets full.
38 And those who were eating were four thousand men, apart from women {gynaikon: adult females} and children {paidion: young offspring}.
39 And after He {Iesous, Traveling Teacher} dismissed the crowds {ochlous: gathered listeners}, He boarded the boat and came to the region of Magadan.
