1 Then Jesus {Iesous, Obedient Son} was taken by the Spirit {pneuma, Sovereign Guide} into the wilderness to undergo testing by the devil.
2 And after He {Christos: Messiah} had fasted {nesteusas: abstaining from food} forty days and forty nights, He grew hungry.
3 And, upon drawing near, the tempter {peirazon: testing adversary} said to Him, “If You are the Son of God {huios tou theou, Tested Son}, command that these stones become loaves of bread.”
4 But He {Iesous, Obedient Son} answered, “It stands written: ‘A human being will not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds from the mouth of God {Theos, Faithful Provider}.’”
5 Then the devil brings Him {Iesous, Faithful Son} into the holy city and places Him on the temple’s highest point {pterygion: elevated ledge}.
6 Then he says to Him, “If You are the Son of God {huios tou Theou: Tested Messiah}, throw Yourself down, for it has been written: He will command His angels {angelos: Heavenly Attendants} concerning You, and they will raise You up on their hands, lest You strike Your foot against a stone.”
7 Jesus {Iesous, Obedient Son} said to him, “Again it has been written: ‘You shall not test the Lord your God {Kyrios Theos, Faithful Covenant Lord}.’”
8 Again, the devil {diabolos: slandering adversary} leads Him {Iesous, Obedient Son} to an exceedingly lofty mountain and displays to Him every kingdom in the world and the glory belonging to them.
9 And he said to Him {Iesous, Tempted Son}, “All these things I will give You if, having fallen down, You worship {proskyneo: reverent homage} Me.”
10 Then Jesus {Iesous, Obedient Son} says to him, “Depart, Satan, because it has been written: ‘You will worship the Lord your God {Kyrion ton Theon, Worthy Lord God}, and you will serve only Him.’”
11 Then the devil released Him {Iesous, Faithful Son}, and look, angels {angeloi: Heavenly Attendants} came and were serving Him.
12 Now when He {Iesous, Responsive Son} heard that John had been handed over, He withdrew into Galilee {Galilaian: Northern Region}.
13 And after leaving Nazareth, He {Iesous, Prophecy Fulfilled} took up residence in Capernaum {Kapharnaoum: Lakeside Town} by the sea, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali.
14 This happened so that what was uttered {rhethen: prophetic utterance} through Isaiah the prophet would be brought to fulfillment {plerothe: full realization}, saying:
15 The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, the road {hodos: main route} by the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations {ethnon: non-Jewish peoples}.
16 The people {laos: gathered community} who were sitting in darkness saw a great light {phos: radiant revelation}; and for those who were sitting in the region and shadow of death, light rose upon them.
17 From that time Jesus {Iesous, Kingdom Herald} began to proclaim and to say, “Repent {metanoeite: reorient yourselves}, for the kingdom of heaven has drawn near.”
18 As He was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, He saw two brothers {adelphous: sibling pair}, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen {halieis: professional fishers}.
19 And He says to them, “Come behind Me {opisō: in My path}, and I will turn you into fishers {halieis: skilled catchers} of people.”
20 And immediately {eutheos: swift response} they left the nets behind and followed Him {Iesous, Calling Teacher}.
21 And after moving on from there, He saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending {katartizontas: repairing} their nets, and He called {ekalesen: summoned} them.
22 And at once they, having left the boat {ploion: working vessel} and their father, followed Him {Iesous, Calling Teacher}.
23 And He was traveling throughout all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues {synagōgais: local assemblies} and proclaiming the good news {euangelion: glad tidings} of the kingdom, and healing every disease and every sickness among the people.
24 And the report about Him {Iesous, Compassionate Healer} circulated through all Syria, and they brought to Him all who were ill with various diseases and torments {basanois: intense suffering}, those oppressed by demons, those who were epileptic, and paralytics, and He healed them.
25 And numerous crowds followed Him {Iesous, Compassionate Healer} from Galilee and Decapolis and Jerusalem and Judea and beyond the Jordan {Iordanou: River Boundary}.
