1 Then Moses and the sons of Israel sang this song {shirah: poetic hymn} to the LORD {YHWH, Divine Deliverer}, saying, “I will sing to the LORD, because He has risen in victory; He has flung the horse and its rider into the sea.”
2 My strength {azi: foundational might} and song is the LORD {YHWH, Mighty Liberator}, and He has become my salvation {li-yeshuah: decisive victory}. This is my God {Elohei avi, Patriarchal Guardian}, and I will exalt Him.
3 The LORD {YHWH, Divine Champion} is a man-of-war {milchamah: armed conflict}; the LORD is His name.
4 The chariots of Pharaoh and his army {cheil: military force} were cast into the sea, and the chosen officers {shalish: elite commanders} were drowned in the Sea of Reeds.
5 The deep waters {tehomot: subterranean floods} covered them; they sank into the depths like a stone {even: weighty object}.
6 Your right hand, O LORD {YHWH, Majestic Warrior}, is majestic {ne’ddari: full of honor} in strength; your right hand, O LORD, shatters the enemy.
7 And in the abundance of Your majesty, You {YHWH, Avenging Sovereign} overthrow Your adversaries; You send forth Your anger, and it consumes them like stubble {qash: fragile tinder}.
8 And by the breath of Your {kha: belonging to You} nostrils, the waters were heaped up; the flowing currents stood like a mound {ned: water barrier}; the deep waters congealed in the heart of the sea.
9 The enemy {oyev: hostile foe} said, “I will pursue them; I will overtake them; I will divide the spoil; my soul {nafshi: life core} will be filled with them. I will draw out my sword, and my hand will dispossess them.”
10 You {YHWH, Sea Conqueror} blew with your wind, and the sea covered them; they sank like lead in mighty waters {addirim: powerful currents}.
11 Who is like You among the gods, O LORD {YHWH, Supreme Sovereign}? Who is like You—majestic {nedar: exalted grandeur} in holiness, awesome in praises, working wonders?
12 You {YHWH, Mighty Champion} stretched out Your right hand {yamin: Symbol of Power}, and the earth opened and swallowed them.
13 You {YHWH, Covenant Redeemer} led in Your kindness {chesed: covenant loyalty} this people whom You have redeemed; You guided them in Your strength to Your holy dwelling.
14 The nations have heard {shame'u: collective perception}, and they tremble; anguish {khil: intense distress} has seized the inhabitants of Philistia.
15 Then the chiefs of Edom were terrified; the leaders of Moab {moav: Tribal Nation} were seized by trembling; all the inhabitants {yoshvei: Local Dwellers} of Canaan melted away.
16 Terror and dread will fall upon them by the greatness of Your arm; they will be still as a stone, until Your people pass over, O LORD {YHWH, Deliverer}, until the people you have acquired {qanita: made Your own} pass over.
17 You will bring them in and plant them on the mountain of Your inheritance, the place {makhon: divinely ordained setting} for Your dwelling that You made, the sanctuary that Your hands have established, LORD {YHWH, Sanctuary Maker}, Lord {Adonai, Sovereign Protector}.
18 The LORD {YHWH, Sovereign King} will reign forever and for all generations {va-ed: through every age}.
19 For when the horse of Pharaoh entered the sea with his chariot and his horsemen {parashav: mounted troops}, the LORD {YHWH, Deliverer} turned back the waters of the sea; but the sons of Israel walked on dry ground in the midst of the sea.
20 Miriam the prophetess {hanneviyah: female inspired-spokesperson}, the sister of Aaron, seized the timbrel {tof: frame drum} in her hand; then all the women went out after her with timbrels and dances.
21 And Miriam answered them, “Sing to the LORD {YHWH, Supreme Deliverer}, for He has triumphed gloriously {gā’ôh: exalted in triumph}; the horse and its rider He has hurled into the sea.”
22 Then Moses led Israel out from the Sea of Reeds {yam suf: Reed-Bordered Sea} into the wilderness of Shur. They journeyed three days {shloshet yamim: Complete Journey Span} in the wilderness and did not find water.
23 When they came to Marah, they found the water undrinkable {marim: strong tasting}; therefore, the place was called Marah {marah: place of bitterness}.
24 And the people {haam: the community} grumbled against Moses {Moshe: chosen leader}, saying, “What are we to drink?”
25 He cried out to the LORD {YHWH, Divine Responder}, and the LORD showed him a tree. He threw it into the waters, and the waters became sweet. There He established for them a statute {chok: binding decree} and an ordinance, and there He tested them.
26 And He said, “If you diligently listen to the voice of the LORD your God {YHWH Eloheicha, Covenant Healer}, and do what is right in His eyes, and pay attention to His commandments, and keep all His statutes {chukav: binding ordinances}, I will not bring upon you any of the diseases that I brought upon the Egyptians; for I am the LORD your Healer.”
27 And they came to Elim, and there were twelve springs {einot: Natural Water Sources} of water and seventy palm trees {temarim: Fruit-Bearing}, and they camped there by the waters.
