1 My God {Eli, Protective Refuge}, my God, why have You forsaken me? Far from my deliverance {yeshuati: rescue} are the words of my roaring.
2 My God {Eli, Personal Refuge}, I call out by day, but You do not answer {taaneh: respond}; and by night, but there is no silence for me.
3 But You{attah: You, the Holy One} are holy, enthroned upon the praises{tehilot: corporate worship} of Israel.
4 In You {YHWH, Trustworthy Rescuer} our fathers trusted; they trusted, and You delivered {palat: rescued} them.
5 To You {YHWH, Deliverer} they cried out and were delivered {nimlatu: divine escape}; in You they trusted and were not ashamed.
6 But I {anokhi: emphatic focus} am a worm and not a man, a reproach {kherpat: public disgrace} and despised by the people.
7 All who see me mock{yal-‘igu: scornful laughter} me; they open wide their lips{safah: speech organ} and shake their heads at me.
8 He commits himself to the LORD {YHWH, Deliverer}; let Him deliver him, let Him rescue him, for He delights {chafetz: takes pleasure} in him.
9 But You {attah, Divine Deliverer} brought me forth from the womb; You made me trust at my mother’s breasts {shdei: nourishing source}.
10 Upon You I was cast from the womb {merechem: Source of Life}; from the belly of my mother, You are my God {Eli, Mighty Protector}.
11 Do not be far from me, for trouble {tsarah: distress} is near; for there is no one to help {ozer: rescuer}.
12 Many bulls {parim: male cattle} have surrounded me; strong ones {abirey: mighty champions} of Bashan have encircled me.
13 They have opened wide their mouths {pihem: aggressive opening} against me, as a lion {aryeh: fierce predator} tearing and roaring.
14 I am poured out like water {mayim: overwhelming deluge}, and all my bones are separated; my heart is like wax, it is melted within my inward parts {me'ai: deep inner being}.
15 My strength is dried up like a potsherd {kacheres: clay fragment}, and my tongue is stuck to my jaws; and You {YHWH, Life Sustainer} set me in the dust of death.
16 For they have surrounded me like dogs {kelabbim: contemptuous comparison}; a company of evildoers has encircled me; like a lion {kaari: predatory threat} they are at my hands and my feet.
17 I can count {asapper: precise tallying} all my bones; they look, they observe {yir'uvi: regard attentively} me.
18 They divide my garments {begadai: outer clothing} among themselves, and for my clothing they cast lots {goral: chance decision}.
19 But You, O LORD {YHWH, Present Deliverer}, do not be far away; O my strength {eyluti: source of power}, hasten to help me.
20 Deliver my soul {nefesh: essential life} from the sword; my only one {yechidah: singular beloved} from the hand of the dog.
21 Rescue me from the mouth of the lion {aryeh: fierce predator} and from the horns of wild oxen; You {YHWH, Divine Rescuer} have answered me.
22 I will recount Your {YHWH, Revealed One} name {shimkha: identity and honor} to my brothers; in the midst of the congregation I will praise You.
23 You who fear the LORD {YHWH, Deserving Reverence} praise Him; all the offspring of Jacob, glorify Him; and all the offspring of Israel {Yisra'el: God-Wrestler} stand in awe of Him.
24 For He {YHWH, Compassionate Deliverer} has not despised nor abhorred the affliction {oni: severe distress} of the afflicted, nor has He hidden His face from him; but when he cried to Him, He heard.
25 My praise comes from You {YHWH, Source of All Praise} in the great assembly {qahal: gathered congregation}; I will fulfill my vows before those who fear Him.
26 The humble will eat and be satisfied. Those who seek the LORD {YHWH, Praise Recipient} will offer praise. May your heart {levav: inmost self} live forever.
27 All the ends of the earth will remember and return to the LORD {YHWH, Universal Redeemer} and all the families of the nations will bow down {yishtachavu: gesture of humble worship} before You.
28 For the kingship belongs to the LORD {YHWH, Sovereign Ruler}, and He rules over the nations {goyim: Peoples}.
29 All the fat ones {dishnei: wealthy elite} of the earth have eaten and bowed down; before Him {YHWH, Sovereign Judge} shall kneel all who go down to the dust, and none can keep alive his own soul.
30 Offspring {zera: descendants} will serve Him {Adonai, Worthy of Service}; it will be recounted to the Lord for a generation.
31 They will come and declare His {YHWH, Righteous Judge} righteousness {tsidqāṯô: just action} to a people being born, for He has done it.
