So I ask again, has God {Theos, Faithful Covenant Keeper} pushed away His people {laos: covenant Israel people}? May it never be! For I too am an Israelite, from the seed of Abraham, from the tribe of Benjamin.
God {Theos, Faithful Covenant Keeper} has not rejected His people whom He foreknew. Or have you not considered what the Scripture {graphe: sacred writing} says in the account about Elijah, how he brings a complaint to God against Israel?
Lord {Kyrios, Righteous Judge}, they killed Your prophets and tore down Your altars; and I alone remain, and they are searching for my life {psychēn: inner being}.
But what does the divine response {chrematismos: heavenly reply} say to him? “I have reserved for Myself seven thousand men who have not bowed the knee to Baal {Baal: Canaanite deity}.”
In the same way, in the present time also, there is a remnant that exists according to the election {eklogen: divine choosing} of grace {charitos: unmerited favor}.
But if by grace {chariti: unearned favor}, then it is no longer from works {ergon: human effort}; otherwise grace is no longer grace.
What then follows? Israel seeks {epizetei: earnest pursuit} it, yet does not obtain it; but the election did obtain it, and the rest were hardened {eporotheisan: made spiritually insensitive}.
As it is written, God {Theos, Sovereign Giver} gave them a spirit {pneuma: inward dullness} of stupor, eyes so that they would not see, and ears so that they would not hear, until this present day.
And David says, “Let their table {trapeza: place of shared provision} become a snare {pagida: concealed capture device} and a trap and a stumbling block and a recompense to them.”
Let their eyes be darkened {skotizo: made unable} so that they may not see, and bend their back {noton: burdened posture} continually.
So I say, did they stumble so that they might fall? May it never be! But by their trespass {paraptoma: covenant-breaking sin}, salvation has come to the Gentiles {ethne: non-Jewish nations}, in order to provoke them to jealousy.
Now if their trespass {paraptoma: deliberate transgression} is riches for the world, and their loss is riches for the nations {ethnon: non-Jewish peoples}, how much more will their fullness be!
But I am speaking to you Gentiles {ethne: non-Jewish nations}. Since I am an apostle to the Gentiles, I magnify my ministry {diakonia: entrusted service}.
If somehow I might provoke my own people {sarka: ethnic kindred} to jealousy and save {sosō: bring into salvation} some of them.
For if their rejection is the reconciliation of the world {kosmos: all humanity}, what will their acceptance be except life {zoe: resurrection existence} from the dead?
But if the firstfruit {aparchē: consecrated beginning} is holy, then the lump is also; and if the root is holy, so too are the branches {kladoi: connected offshoots}.
But if some of the branches were broken off, and you, being a wild olive {agrielaios: uncultivated stock}, were grafted in among them and became a fellow-partaker of the root {rhize: covenant foundation} of the richness of the olive tree.
Do not boast against the branches, but if you do boast, it is not you who support the root {rhiza: sustaining source}, but the root supports {bastazo: holds up} you.
Then you will say, “Branches were broken off {exeklasthesan: removed from covenant} so that I might be grafted in {egkentristhō: joined to tree}.”
Well; they were broken off by unbelief {apistia: refusal to trust}, but you stand by faith {pistis: steadfast reliance}. Do not think highly, but fear.
For if God {Theos, Righteous Judge} did not spare the branches according to nature, neither will He spare you {sou: individually warned}.
Behold therefore the kindness and severity of God {Theos, Righteous Arbiter}: severity upon those who have fallen, but upon you, kindness from God—if you continue in His kindness {chrestotes: gracious action}; otherwise you also will be cut off.
And even those, if they do not remain {epimeno: continue steadfastly} in unbelief, will be grafted in; for God {Theos, Faithful Restorer} is able to graft them in again.
For if you were cut out from the wild olive tree {agrielaios: uncultivated stock} according to nature, and, contrary to nature, were grafted into a cultivated olive tree {kallielaios: carefully tended tree}, how much more will these, who are natural branches, be grafted into their own olive tree?
For I do not want you, brothers, to be ignorant of this mystery {mysterion: revealed secret}, so that you may not consider yourselves wise {phronimoi: self-satisfied pride} in your own estimation, that a partial hardening has come upon Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in.
And in this way all Israel will be saved, just as it has been written: “The Deliverer {rhyomenos: the one rescuing} will come out of Zion, He will turn away ungodliness from Jacob {Iakōb: national ancestor}.”
And this is the covenant {diatheke: solemn promise} from Me {Theos, Covenant Promise Giver} to them, when I take away their sins.
Regarding the gospel {euangelion: message of good news}, they are enemies for your sake, but with respect to the election, they are beloved for the sake of the fathers {pateras: ancestral patriarchs}.
For the gifts {charismata: gracious gifts} and the calling of God {Theos, Sovereign Caller} are irrevocable.
For just as you once disobeyed God {Theos, Giver Of Mercy}, yet now you have been shown mercy through their disobedience {apeitheia: refusal to be persuaded}.
In this way, these also have now been disobedient {apeitheo: refused to obey}, so that by your mercy {eleei: undeserved kindness}, they also may now receive mercy.
For God {Theos, Just Ruler} has shut up all {pantas: every human group} into disobedience, in order that He might show mercy on all.
Oh, the fathomless depth {bathos: immeasurable greatness} of the riches, the wisdom, and the knowledge of God {Theos, Incomprehensible Wise Lord}; how unsearchable are His judgments, and how untraceable His ways!
For who has known the mind of the Lord {Kyrios, All-Wise Sovereign}? Or who has become His counselor {sumboulos: strategic advisor}?
Or who has given {proedōken: acted beforehand} to Him {Theos, Self-Sufficient Lord} first, that it will be repaid to Him?
For from Him {Theos, Sovereign Source and Goal} and through Him and to Him are all things {panta: entire created order}. To Him be the glory for the ages. Amen.
