1 And as He {Iesous, Prophetic Teacher} was going out from the temple {hieron: sacred precinct}, one of His disciples said to Him, “Teacher, look at what kind of stones and what kind of buildings!”
2 And Jesus {Iesous, Prophetic Teacher} said to him, “Do you see these great buildings {oikodomas: monumental structures}? Not one stone will be left here upon another which will not be thrown down.”
3 And as He {Iesous, Prophetic Teacher} was sitting on the Mount of Olives {Oros ton Elaion: ridge near Jerusalem}, opposite the temple, Peter and James and John and Andrew asked Him privately,
4 Tell us, when will these things {tauta: foretold events} be, and what will be the sign {semeion: prophetic indicator} when all these things are about to be accomplished?
5 And Jesus {Iesous, Prophetic Warner} began to say to them, “Take heed {blepete: stay alert}, lest anyone deceive you.”
6 Many will come in My {Iesous, Faithful Forewarner} name, saying, “I am He,” and they will deceive {planesousin: lead away from truth} many.
7 But whenever you hear of wars and reports of wars, do not be alarmed {throeisthe: shaken inwardly}; it is necessary {dei: divinely appointed} for these things to take place, but the end is not yet.
8 For nation {ethnos: distinct people group} will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places, and there will be famines; these things are the beginning {arche: first stage} of birth pains.
9 But watch yourselves; they will hand you over to councils, and in synagogues you will be beaten, and before governors and kings you will stand for My {Iesous, Preparing His Witnesses} sake, as a testimony {martyrion: legal witness} to them.
10 And first {proton: before other events}, the gospel {euangelion: good news message} must be proclaimed among all the nations.
11 And whenever they lead you, delivering you over, do not be anxious beforehand about what you might say, but whatever is given to you in that hour {hora: divinely appointed time}, speak this. For it is not you who are speaking, but the Holy Spirit {pneuma to hagion, Empowering Presence}.
12 And brother {adelphos: close male relative} will deliver up brother to death, and a father {pater: family patriarch} a child, and children will rise up against parents and will put them to death.
13 And you will be hated {miseo: intense hostility} by all because of My {Iesous, Rejected Messiah} name, but the one who endures to the end, that one will be saved.
14 But when you see the abomination {bdelygma: detestable thing} of desolation standing where it ought not (let the one who reads understand), then let those who are in Judea {Ioudaia: southern territory} flee to the mountains.
15 Let the one who is on the housetop {doma: flat roof} not go down, nor enter to take anything out of his house {oikia: household dwelling}.
16 And let the one who is in the field {agron: cultivated farmland} not turn back to take his cloak {himation: outer garment used for protection}.
17 But woe to the women who are with child and to those nursing {thelazousais: breastfeeding infants} in those days {hemerais: severe hardship}!
18 But pray {proseuchesthe: urgent communal plea} that it may not happen in winter {cheimonos: season of storms and hardship}.
19 For those days will be a tribulation {thlipsis: overwhelming affliction} such as has not occurred from the beginning of the creation which God {Theos, Sovereign Creator} created until now, and never will be.
20 And if the Lord {Kyrios, Sovereign Preserver} had not cut short the days {hemerai: appointed time}, no flesh would have been saved; but for the sake of the elect, whom He selected, He has cut short the days.
21 And then, if anyone says to you, “Look, here is the Christ {Christos, True Messiah},” or, “Look, there He is,” do not believe {pisteuo: accept as true} it.
22 For false Christs and false prophets will arise, and they will show signs {semeia: miraculous indicators} and wonders to lead astray, if possible, even the elect {eklektous: chosen ones}.
23 But you, be watchful; I {Iesous, Prophetic Teacher} have told you all things beforehand {proeirēka: prior warning}.
24 But in those days, after that tribulation {thlipsin: severe affliction}, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light {phengos: luminous brightness},
25 And the stars will be falling from the heaven {ouranou: visible sky}, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken {saleuthesontai: violently moved}.
26 And then they will see the Son of Man {huios tou anthropou, Messianic Judge} coming in the clouds with great power and glory {doxa: divine radiance}.
27 And then He {Iesous, Eschatological Judge} will send the angels, and He will gather together the chosen ones from the four winds {anemos: four directions}, from the ends of the earth to the ends of heaven.
28 Now from the fig tree {suke: seasonal sign}, learn the parable {parabole: illustrative lesson}: when its branch has already become tender and puts out the leaves, you know that the summer is near.
29 So also, whenever you see these things happening {ginomena: unfolding events}, know that it is near, at the doors {thyrais: points of access}.
30 Truly I {Iesous, Reliable Prophet} tell you: this generation {genea: group of contemporaries} will certainly not pass away until all these things happen.
31 Heaven and earth will pass away {pareleusontai: cease to remain}, but My {Iesous, Eternal Speaker} words will never vanish.
32 But concerning that day or that hour, no one knows—not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son {Huios, Incarnate Son}—except the Father {Pater, Sovereign Knower}.
33 Watch, stay awake {agrypneite: be continuously alert}, for you do not know when the appointed time {kairos: divinely determined moment} is.
34 Just like a man traveling abroad, who left his own house and gave authority to his servants, to each his work {ergon: assigned task}, and to the doorkeeper he commanded that he should keep watch {gregoreo: stay alert}.
35 Therefore, be alert; for you do not know when the master of the house {kyrios tes oikias: household authority} is coming—whether in the evening {opse: first night-watch}, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or in the morning.
36 Lest, having come suddenly, He {Kyrios, Unexpected Arriver} should find you sleeping {katheudo: inactive, unresponsive}.
37 But what I say to you, I say to all {pasin: every person addressed}: Be watchful {gregoreite: remain alert and vigilant}.
