1 Now the Passover {pascha: deliverance festival} and the Unleavened Bread were two days away, and the chief priests and the scribes were seeking how, by craft, they might seize Him {Iesous, Forthcoming Sacrifice} and kill Him.
2 For they were saying, “Not during the feast {heorte: festival gathering}, lest there will be an uproar {thorybos: public disturbance} of the people.”
3 And while He {Iesous, Honored Guest} was in Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as He was reclining at the table, a woman came having an alabaster flask of ointment of pure nard, very costly {polytelous: of great value}; after breaking the alabaster flask, she poured it on His head.
4 But some were indignant {aganaktountes: deeply offended} among themselves, “Why has this waste {apoleia: senseless loss} of the ointment happened?”
5 For this ointment could have been sold for more than three hundred denarii and given to the poor {ptochos: those without resources}; and they began to scold her {enebrimonto: strongly rebuke}.
6 But Jesus {Iesous, Gracious Defender} said, “Leave her alone; why do you cause her trouble {kopous: burdensome effort}? She has done a good work for Me.”
7 For you always have the poor {ptochous: socially vulnerable people} with you, and whenever you wish, you are able to do good to them; but Me {Iesous, Soon-To-Be Sacrificed} you do not always have.
8 What she had she did; she has anticipated to anoint My {Iesous, Suffering Messiah} body for the burial {entaphiasmon: ritual preparation for interment}.
9 Truly I {Iesous: Solemn Guarantor} say to you, wherever the gospel {euangelion: saving message} is proclaimed in all the world, what this woman has done will also be spoken of, for a memorial of her.
10 And Judas Iscariot, the one of the twelve, went away to the chief priests {archiereis: temple leaders} in order that he might betray Him {Iesous, Betrayed Lord} to them.
11 But when they heard, they rejoiced and promised to give him money, and he was seeking how he might hand Him {Iesous, Suffering Messiah} over at an opportune moment {eukairos: favorable timing}.
12 And on the first day of Unleavened Bread {azymon: week-long observance}, when they were sacrificing the Passover, His disciples said to Him {Iesous, Messianic Teacher}, “Where do You desire that, after we go, we should prepare so that You may eat the Passover?”
13 And He {Iesous, Sovereign Guide} sent two of His disciples {mathetes: devoted learners} and said to them, “Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you; follow him.”
14 And wherever He enters, say to the master of the house, “The Teacher says, ‘Where is My {Iesous, Passover Host} guest room {katalyma: reserved lodging}, where I may eat the Passover with My disciples?’”
15 And he will show you a large upper room furnished {estromenon: fully laid out} and ready; there prepare for us {hemin: on our behalf}.
16 And the disciples went out and came into the city, and they found it just as He {Iesous, Faithful Foreteller} had said to them, and they prepared the Passover {pascha: Exodus deliverance feast}.
17 And when evening {opsias: period after sunset} had come, He {Iesous, Passover Host} came with the twelve.
18 And as they were reclining and eating, Jesus {Iesous, All-Knowing Redeemer} said, “Truly I say to you, one of you will betray {paradosei: treacherously hand over} Me, one who is eating with Me.”
19 They began to be grieved {lupeisthai: deeply distressed}, and to say to Him {Iesous, Revealing Betrayer}, one after another, “Surely not I?”
20 But He {Iesous, All-Knowing Teacher} said to them, “One of the Twelve, the one who is dipping with Me into the dish {tryblion: shared meal vessel}.”
21 For the Son of Man {huios tou anthropou, Suffering Messiah} indeed goes just as it has been written about Him, but woe to that man {anthropō: guilty betrayer} through whom the Son of Man is betrayed; it would have been good for him if that man had not been born.
22 And while they were eating, He {Iesous, Covenant Giver} took bread and, having blessed, He broke it, and gave it to them and said, “Take; this is My body {soma: self given}.”
23 And He {Iesous, Instituting Covenant Meal}, after taking a cup {poterion: shared drinking vessel} and giving thanks, gave it to them, and they all drank from it.
24 And He {Iesous, Covenant Sacrifice} said to them, “This is My blood of the covenant {diatheke: binding pledge}, which is being poured out for many.”
25 Truly, I {Iesous, Self-Giving Redeemer} say to you that I will certainly no longer drink from the fruit {genema: cultivated produce} of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God {Theos, Sovereign King}.
26 And after they had sung {hymnesantes: offered praise} a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives {elaiōn: olive trees}.
27 And Jesus {Iesous, Suffering Shepherd} said to them, “All of you will be caused to stumble, because it is written: ‘I will strike the shepherd {poimena: covenant leader}, and the sheep will be scattered.’”
28 But after I {Iesous, Faithful Forerunner} am raised, I will go before you into Galilee {Galilaia: northern district}.
29 But Peter said to Him {Iesous, Foretelling Lord}, “Even if all stumble {skandalizo: caused stumble}, I will not.”
30 And Jesus {Iesous, Divine Teacher} said to him, “Truly {amen: solemn certainty} I say to you that you, today, in this very night, before a rooster crows twice, will deny Me three times.”
31 But he was speaking all the more emphatically, “If it is necessary for me to die with You {Iesous, Soon-Suffering Lord}, I will certainly not deny {aparnesomai: completely renounce} You.” Likewise, all were saying the same.
32 And they came to a place named Gethsemane {gethsemani: olive press garden}, and He {Iesous, Prayerful Leader} said to His disciples, “Sit here until I pray.”
33 And He {Iesous, Agonizing Messiah} takes Peter, James, and John with Him, and He began to be greatly amazed {ekthambeisthai: intensely alarmed} and deeply distressed.
34 And He {Iesous, Suffering Messiah} says to them, “Deeply grieved is My soul {psuche: inner being} to the point of death; remain here and keep watch.”
35 And having gone forward a little, He {Iesous, Obedient Son} was falling upon the ground and was praying that, if it is possible, the hour {hora: appointed moment} might pass from Him.
36 And He {Iesous, Obedient Son} was saying, “Abba, Father, all things are possible for You; remove this cup {poterion: bitter suffering} from Me; yet not what I will, but what You will.”
37 And He {Iesous, Grieved Intercessor} came and found them sleeping, and He said to Peter, “Simon, are you sleeping? Were you not able to keep watch {gregoreo: stay spiritually alert} for one hour?”
38 Be watchful and pray so that you might not enter into temptation. The spirit is indeed willing {pneuma: immaterial inner being}, but the flesh is weak {sarx: frail bodily nature}.
39 And again He {Iesous, Persevering Messiah} departed and prayed, saying the same word {logon: spoken utterance}.
40 And again, having come, He {Iesous, Vigilant Sufferer} found them sleeping {katheudontas: physical sleep state}, for their eyes were being weighed down, and they did not know what they might answer Him.
41 And He came the third time and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? It is enough. The hour has come; behold, the Son of Man{huios tou anthropou, Suffering Redeemer} is being betrayed{paradidotai: handed over} into the hands of sinners.”
42 Rise, let us go; behold {idou: pay close attention}, the one who is betraying Me {Iesous, Willing Sacrifice} has drawn near.
43 And immediately, while He {Iesous, Approaching Sacrifice} was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, arrived, and with him a crowd {ochlos: armed gathering} with swords and clubs, from the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders.
44 Now the one betraying Him {Iesous, Betrayed Messiah} had given them a sign {syssemon: prearranged mark}, saying, “Whomever I shall kiss, He is the one; seize Him and lead Him away securely.”
45 And when he had come, immediately having approached Him {Iesous, Approached Teacher}, he said, “Rabbi {rabbi: honored teacher},” and he kissed Him.
46 And they laid their hands {kheiras: hostile touch} on Him {Iesous, Betrayed Lord} and seized Him.
47 But one {heis: single participant} of those who stood nearby, having drawn the sword, struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his ear {otarion: small outer ear}.
48 And Jesus {Iesous, Innocent Sufferer} answered and said to them, “Have you come out as against a robber {lestes: dangerous lawbreaker}, with swords and clubs to seize Me?”
49 Day by day I {Iesous, Public Teacher} was with you in the temple teaching, and you did not seize Me; but this took place so that the Scriptures {graphai: sacred writings} might be fulfilled.
50 And after leaving Him {Iesous, Forsaken Lord}, they all fled {ephygon: ran away in fear}.
