1 And Jesus {Iēsous, Prophetic Teacher} came out of the temple and was leaving, and His disciples drew near to show Him the buildings {oikodomas: impressive structures} of the temple.
2 But He {Iesous, Prophetic Judge} answered them, “Do you not see all these things? Truly {amēn: solemn affirmation} I say to you, by no means will one stone remain here upon another that will not be thrown down.”
3 And while He {Iesous, End-Time Teacher} was seated on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him by themselves and said, “Tell us, when will these things occur, and what is the sign {semeion: Distinguishing Indicator} of Your coming and of the end of the age?”
4 And Jesus {Iesous, Faithful Warner} answered them, “Take care that no one deceives you {planese: leads you astray}.”
5 For many will come under My {Iesous, Faithful Prophet} name {onoma: representative authority} and will say, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will deceive many.
6 You are on the verge of hearing of wars and reports of conflict; ensure you are not dismayed {throeisthe: shaken or agitated}, for it is necessary {dei: divinely appointed} that these matters should come about, but the end is not yet.
7 For nation {ethnos: political group} will be raised up against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and in various places {topos: local areas} there will be famines and earthquakes.
8 But all these are the beginning {archē: first stage} of birth pains {ōdinōn: intense travail}.
9 Then they will hand you over to tribulation {thlipsis: severe distress}, and they will kill you, and you will be hated by all the nations because of My name {Iesous: Foretelling Suffering}.
10 And then many will stumble {skandalisthēsontai: fall into offense}, and they will hand one another over and hate one another {allelous: mutual hostility}.
11 And many false prophets {pseudoprophetai: lying spiritual guides} will rise up, and they will lead many astray {planesousin: turn from truth}.
12 And because lawlessness {anomia: defiance of God} is multiplied, the love {agape: covenantal devotion} of many will become cold.
13 But the one who endures {hypomeinas: patiently remains} until the end {telos: final completion} will be saved.
14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed in the whole inhabited world {oikoumene: known human world} for a testimony {martyrion: confirming witness} to all the nations, and then the end will come.
15 Therefore, whenever you see the abomination of desolation, which was spoken through Daniel the prophet {prophetes: inspired messenger}, standing in the holy place, let the one reading understand {noeo: discern deeply}.
16 Then let those who are in Judea {Ioudaia: southern hill country} run away to the mountains {orē: surrounding heights}.
17 Let no one on the roof {domatos: flat roof} go down to carry away {arai: take away} anything from his home.
18 And let the one who is in the field {agros: cultivated land} not turn back behind to take up his garment {himation: outer clothing}.
19 But woe to those bearing children {gastri: having in the womb} and to those nursing infants {thelazousais: giving milk} in those days.
20 But pray {proseuchesthe: keep on petitioning} that your flight may not come about in winter or on the Sabbath {sabbatō: sacred rest day}.
21 For then there will be a great tribulation {thlipsis: overwhelming distress}, the kind that has not occurred since the world’s first origin {archē: starting point} until now, nor will ever happen again.
22 And if those days had not been curtailed, no flesh {sarx: mortal life} would be preserved; but for the sake of the elect {eklektos: chosen ones}, the days will be curtailed.
23 Then if anyone says to you, “Look, here is the Christ {Christos, True Messiah},” or, “Look, there,” do not believe {pisteuō: accept as true} it.
24 For false Christs and false prophets will rise, and they will display great signs{semeia: confirming tokens} and wonders in order to lead astray, if possible, even the elect{eklektous: chosen ones}.
25 Behold {idou: pay close attention}, I {Iesous, Faithful Forewarner} have told you ahead of time.
26 Therefore, if they declare to you, “Behold, He {Christos, Misreported Messiah} dwells in the wilderness {eremos: solitary region},” do not venture forth; or if they declare, “Behold, He dwells in the inner rooms,” do not accept their claim.
27 For just as lightning {astrape: sudden illumination} flashes from the east and is seen as far as the west, so will the coming of the Son of Man {huios tou anthropou, Revealed King} be.
28 Wherever the corpse lies, there the eagles {aetoi: large carrion birds} will be gathered {synachthesontai: brought together}.
29 But immediately after the tribulation of those days, the sun will grow dark, the moon will fail to shed its radiance {phengos: radiant glow}, the stars will cascade from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken {saleuthēsontai: violently moved}.
30 And then the sign of the Son of Man {huiou tou anthropou: Glorious Returning Judge} will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes {phulai: extended family groups} of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming upon the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.
31 And He {autou: Returning Judge} will send His angels with a loud trumpet {salpingos: sacred summons} blast, and they will gather His chosen ones from the four winds, from the ends of the heavens to their ends.
32 But from the fig tree {sukes: seasonal sign} learn the parable {parabolen: illustrative lesson}: when its branch becomes tender and puts out leaves, you know that summer is near.
33 In the same way, you also, when you see all these things{tauta: visible signs}, know that He{Christos: Returning Lord} is near at the doors.
34 Truly I say to you, this generation {genea: contemporaries sharing time} will certainly not pass away until all these things {tauta: predicted events} take place.
35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but My {Iesous, Trustworthy Prophet} words {logoi: solemn promises} will never pass away.
36 But concerning that day and hour, no one knows—not even the angels of the heavens, nor the Son {huios, Coming Judge}—except the Father {pater, Sovereign Knower} alone.
37 For just as the days of Noah {Noe: preserved through judgment} were, so will the coming of the Son of Man {huios tou anthropou, Returning Judge} be.
38 For just as they were in the days before the flood, eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day Noah {Nōe, Righteous Preacher} entered into the ark {kibōton: vessel of preservation}.
39 And they did not know until the flood came and took them all away {eren: removed utterly}; in this way also will be the coming of the Son of Man {huios tou anthropou: Messianic Judge}.
40 Then two will be in the field; one will be taken {paralambanetai: taken along}, and one will be left {aphietai: left behind}.
41 Two women will be grinding grain at the household mill {mylo: hand mill}; one will be taken, and one will be left {aphietai: allowed to remain}.
42 Therefore, stay vigilant, because you do not know on what day your Lord {Kyrios, Returning Lord} is coming {erchetai: active arrival}.
43 But know this: if the master of the household {oikodespōtēs: household head} had discerned in which watch {phylakḗ: fixed night division} the thief was coming, he would have remained vigilant and would not have allowed his house to be breached.
44 Because of this, you also must be ready, for at an hour when you do not expect, the Son of Man {huios tou anthropou: Eschatological Judge} is coming {erchetai: ongoing certain arrival}.
45 Who then is the faithful and wise servant whom the master {kyrios: household authority} has appointed over his household to provide them food at the appointed season {kairō: appointed season}?
46 Blessed is that servant whom his master {kyrios: household authority}, when he comes, will find him working {poiounta: faithfully working}.
47 Truly I {Iesous, Divine Teacher} say to you, He will appoint him over all his possessions {hyparchousin: resources entrusted to him}.
48 Yet if that evil {kakos: morally corrupt} servant should say in his heart {kardia: inner thoughts}, “My master is delaying.”
49 And he begins to beat his fellow servants {syndoulous: household co-servants} and to eat and drink with the drunkards {methuonton: persistently drunken people}.
50 The master {kyrios: human authority} of that servant will come on a day {hemera: unexpected time} which he does not expect, and at an hour which he does not know.
