1 And the LORD {YHWH, Divine Commander} said to Moses, “Go to Pharaoh and say to him, ‘Thus says the LORD God of the Hebrews: Send my people {ammî: Covenant Assembly} so that they may serve Me.’”
2 For if you refuse {ma’en: obstinately withhold consent} to send them away and still hold them fast {maḥazzîq: forceful restraint}.
3 Behold, the hand of the LORD {YHWH, Judge of Nations} is upon your livestock in the field, on the horses, on the donkeys, on the camels, on the cattle, and on the sheep and goats—a very severe plague {dever: devastating pestilence}.
4 But the LORD {YHWH, Distinguishing Judge} will make a distinction {hiflah: set apart by sign} between the livestock of Israel and the livestock of Egypt, and nothing belonging to the sons of Israel will die.
5 And the LORD {YHWH, Sovereign Scheduler} appointed a set time {moed: specific timing}, saying, “Tomorrow the LORD will do this thing in the land.”
6 And the LORD {YHWH, Divine Judge} did this thing {davar: spoken decree} on the next day, and all the livestock of Egypt died, but not one animal of the sons of Israel died.
7 And Pharaoh sent, and behold, not even one of the livestock {mikneh: domestic animals} of Israel had died. But Pharaoh’s heart {lev: inner will} was hardened, and he did not send out the people.
8 And the LORD {YHWH, Judge Over Egypt} said to Moses and to Aaron, “Take for yourselves a full handful of soot from a furnace, and let Moses throw it heavenward {hashamaymah: skyward} before the eyes of Pharaoh.”
9 And it will become fine dust over all the land of Egypt, and it will be upon the people and upon the animals as a boil {shechin: festering boil} bursting out into blisters {avabuot: raised swellings} in all the land of Egypt.
10 So they took the soot {piach: fine ashes} from the furnace and stood before Pharaoh, and Moses threw it toward the sky, and it became boils {shechin: inflamed sores} erupting into blisters on the people and on the livestock.
11 And the magicians {chartumim: Egyptian Occult Practitioners} could not stand before Moses because of the boils {shechin: Painful Eruptions}, for the boil was upon the magicians and upon all the Egyptians.
12 And the LORD {YHWH, Righteous Judge} strengthened Pharaoh’s heart, and he did not listen to them, just as the LORD had spoken to Moses {Moshe: Chosen Messenger}.
13 And the LORD, the God of the Hebrews {YHWH ’ĕlohê ha-’ivrîm, Sovereign Commander}, said to Moses, “Rise early in the morning and stand before Pharaoh. Then say to him, ‘Thus says the LORD, the God of the Hebrews: Send my people away so that they may serve me {ya‘avduni: worship}.’”
14 For at this time I {YHWH, Supreme Judge} am sending all My plagues upon your heart {leb: Innermost Self} and upon your servants and upon your people, so that you may know that there is none like Me in all the earth.
15 For now I {YHWH, Sovereign Judge} could have stretched out my hand and struck you and your people with the plague {daver: devastating pestilence}, and you would have been wiped out from the earth.
16 But for this very cause I {YHWH, Sovereign Judge} have raised you up, for the purpose of showing you my power {koach: inherent strength} and in order that my name may be declared throughout all the earth.
17 You are still exalting yourself {mistolel: lifting yourself up arrogantly} against my {YHWH: Sovereign Owner} people, so as not to send them out.
18 Behold, I {YHWH, Sovereign Judge} will cause a hail {barad: destructive storm} extremely heavy to rain down at about this time tomorrow, such as has not been in Egypt since the day it was founded until now.
19 And now send {shelach: urgent command} and bring in your livestock and everything you have in the field, for every person and beast not brought into the house the hail {barad: lethal storm} will come down and they will die.
20 The one who feared the word {davar: solemn command} of the LORD {YHWH, Divine Judge} among the servants of Pharaoh caused his servants and his livestock to flee into the houses.
21 But whoever did not set his heart {libbo: inner resolve} to the word of the LORD {YHWH, Righteous Instructor} left his servants and his livestock in the field.
22 And the LORD {YHWH, Sovereign Judge} said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand {yad: instrument of power} toward the heavens, so that hail may fall upon all the land of Egypt—upon human beings, upon animals, and upon every plant of the field in the land of Egypt.”
23 And Moses stretched out his staff toward the heavens, and the LORD {YHWH, Divine Judge} gave thunderous sounds {kolot: mighty voices} and hail, and fire went forth to the earth. And the LORD rained hail upon the land of Egypt.
24 And there was hail {barad: icy pellets} and fire flashing in the midst of the hail, exceedingly heavy, such as had not been like it in all the land of Egypt since it became a nation {goy: people-group}.
25 And the hail {barad: devastating storm} struck throughout all the land of Egypt—everything in the field from man to beast—and the vegetation {esev: green plants} of the field it struck, and it shattered every tree.
26 Only in the land of Goshen, where the sons {b'nei: children, descendants} of Israel were, there was no hail {barad: destructive storm}.
27 Then Pharaoh sent for Moses and Aaron and said to them, “I have sinned this time. The LORD {YHWH, Just Judge} is the righteous one {hatsaddiq: perfectly just}, and I and my people are the wicked ones.”
28 Entreat the LORD {YHWH, Divine Judge}, for there has been enough of the voices of God and the hail {barad: devastating pellets}; and I will send you away, and you will not remain here any longer.
29 And Moses said to him, “When I leave the city, I will spread out my hands {kappay: upraised palms} to the LORD {YHWH, Master of Storms}, and the thunder will cease and there will be no more hail, so that you may know that the earth belongs to the LORD.”
30 But as for you and your servants, I have known that you do not yet {terem: still prior} fear the LORD God {YHWH Elohim, Supreme Judge}.
31 And the flax and the barley were struck down because the barley {seorah: grain in ear} was in the ear and the flax {pishtah: fiber crop} was in the stalk.
32 But the wheat and the spelt were not struck {nukku: sustained damage} because they were late-ripening {afilot: matured later}.
33 And Moses went out from Pharaoh and from the city, and he spread out his hands toward the LORD {YHWH, Prayer Receiver}, and the thunders {kol: powerful sounds} and the hail ceased, and rain was not poured on the land.
34 And Pharaoh saw that the rain and hail and the voices {kolot: mighty sounds} had ceased, and he added to sin, and he hardened his heart {lev: inner will}, he and his servants.
35 So the heart {lev: inner resolve} of Pharaoh was hardened, and he did not send away the sons of Israel, just as the LORD {YHWH, Promise-Fulfiller} had spoken by the hand of Moses.
