1 But on the first {mia: first day count} day of the week, Mary Magdalene came early, while it was still dark, to the tomb {mnemeion: burial place}, and she saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb.
2 So she runs and comes to Simon Peter and to the other disciple whom Jesus {Iesous, Faithful Teacher} loved, and she says to them, “They have taken the Lord {Kyrios, Revered Master} out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid Him.”
3 Therefore Peter {Petros: Leading Apostle} went out, and the other disciple also, and they were going toward the tomb {mnemeion: burial place}.
4 The two were running {etrechon: continuous motion} together, but the other disciple ran ahead of Peter faster and came first to the tomb {mnemeion: burial chamber}.
5 And, having stooped down {parakupto: bending forward}, he saw the linen cloths lying there, yet he did not go in {eiserchomai: enter the tomb}.
6 Then Simon Peter {Petros, leading disciple} also came, following him, and he entered into the tomb, and he saw the linen cloths {othonia: burial wrappings} lying there.
7 And the face cloth {soudarion: burial napkin} that was upon His {Iesous, Risen Lord} head was not lying with the linen cloths, but was set apart, having been wrapped up in one place {topos: specific location}.
8 Then therefore the other disciple {mathetes: close follower}, who had come first to the tomb, also entered; and he saw and believed {episteusen: decisive trust}.
9 For they had not yet understood the Scripture{graphe: prophetic writings}, that it was necessary for Him{Iesous, Promised Risen One} to rise from among the dead.
10 Then the disciples {mathetai: close followers} went away again to their own {hautous: familiar quarters} place.
11 But Mary {Maria: Mourning Woman} remained outside the tomb {mnemeion: Burial Place}, in tears; and as she kept weeping, she leaned over and looked into the tomb.
12 And she observed two angels dressed in white, seated, one beside the head {kephale: place of honor} and one beside the feet, where the body of Jesus {Iesous, Crucified Messiah} had been lying.
13 And they said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She replied, “Because they took away my Lord {Kyrios, Crucified Lord}, and I do not know where they have laid {ethekan: set down} Him.”
14 After saying these things, she turned {estraphe: sudden pivot} toward the rear and saw Jesus {Iesous, Risen Lord} standing, and she remained unaware that it was Jesus.
15 Jesus {Iesous, Risen Master} says to her, “Woman, why are you weeping {klaieis: lamenting aloud}? Whom are you seeking?” She, supposing that He was the gardener, says to Him, “Sir, if you carried Him away, tell me where you laid Him, and I will take Him away.”
16 Jesus {Iesous, Risen Lord} says to her, “Mary.” After turning, she says to Him in Aramaic, “Rabbouni,” which is called Teacher {Didaskale: Guiding Instructor}.
17 Jesus {Iesous, Risen Teacher} said to her, “Do not keep grasping Me, for I have not yet gone up to the Father {pater, Heavenly Source}; but go to My brothers {adelphous: fellow disciples} and say to them, ‘I am going up to My Father and your Father, and to My God {Theos, Covenant God} and your God.’”
18 Mary Magdalene came with a report {angelousa: bearing witness} to the disciples that she had seen the Lord {Kyrios, Risen Master} and that He had said these things to her.
19 Therefore, as evening was coming on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors remained shut where the disciples were because of fear of the Jews, Jesus {Iesous, Risen Messiah} came and stood in their midst and says to them, “Peace {eirene: Covenant Calm} to you.”
20 And after He had said this, He showed them His hands and His side. Then the disciples rejoiced {echaresan: filled with joy} when they saw the Lord {Kyrios, Risen Before Them}.
21 Then Jesus {Iesous, Risen Sender} said to them once more, "Peace to you. In just the way that the Father {pater, Sending Source} has sent Me, I send you too."
22 And having said this, He {Iesous, Risen Breath-Giver} breathed on them and says to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit {pneuma hagion, Empowering Presence}.”
23 If you forgive {aphete: release from guilt} the sins {hamartias: offenses against God} of anyone, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of anyone, they have been retained.
24 But Thomas, one of the twelve, called the Twin {Didymos: twin byname}, was not with them when Jesus {Iesous, Risen Messiah} came.
25 Therefore the other disciples were saying to him, “We have seen the Lord {Kyrios, Risen Master}.” But he said to them, “Unless I see in His hands the nail imprint, and put my finger into that trace, and put my hand into His side {pleuran: wounded flank}, I will by no means believe.”
26 When eight days had passed, once again, His disciples were inside {eso, within the room}, and Thomas was with them. Jesus {Iesous, Risen Lord} came, with the doors having been locked, and stood at the center and said, “Peace be to you.”
27 Then He {Iesous, Patient Corrector} says to Thomas, “Bring your finger {daktylon: point of contact} here and examine My hands; bring your hand and set it into My side; and do not grow unbelieving, but believing.”
28 Thomas gave his answer to Him: “My Lord {Kyrios, Risen Sovereign} and my God {Theos, Revealed Deity}.”
29 Jesus {Iesous, Risen Revealer} says to him, “Since you have seen Me, you have believed; blessed {makarioi: Divinely Favored} are those who did not see and yet believed.”
30 Jesus {Iesous, Revealing Messiah} therefore also did many other signs {semeia: revealing acts} before the disciples, which are not written in this book.
31 These things have been set down so that you may believe that Jesus {Iesous, Revealed Messiah} is the Christ, the Son of God {huios tou theou, Life-Giving Son}, and so that, by believing, you may have life in His name.
