1 And King Solomon{Shlomo: Peaceful Monarch} loved many foreign women, along with the daughter of Pharaoh{Par’o: Egyptian Ruler}: Moabite, Ammonite, Edomite, Sidonian, and Hittite women.
2 From the nations about which the LORD {YHWH, Covenant Lawgiver} said to the sons of Israel, “You shall not enter into them, and they shall not enter into you. For surely they will turn your heart after their gods {eloheihem: foreign deities}.” Solomon clung to them in love.
3 And he had seven hundred princesses {sarot: noble women} and three hundred concubines, and his wives turned his heart {libbo: inner self} away.
4 And it came to pass, at the time of Solomon’s old age, his wives turned his heart {levav: inner self} after other gods, and his heart was not whole with the LORD his God {YHWH Elohav, Covenant Keeper}, like the heart of David his father.
5 And Solomon went after Ashtoreth, the goddess {elohei: deity designation} of the Sidonians, and after Milcom, the abomination {shikkutz: detestable thing} of the Ammonites.
6 And Solomon did what was evil {hara: moral defiance} in the eyes of the LORD {YHWH, Righteous Judge}, and he did not follow fully after the LORD as his father David had done.
7 Then Solomon built a high place for Chemosh {kemosh: foreign deity}, the abomination {shikkuts: offensive idol} of Moab, on the mountain that is before Jerusalem, and for Molech, the abomination of the sons of Ammon.
8 And so he did for all his foreign wives {hanokhriyot: non-Israelite women}, who burned incense and sacrificed to their gods {eloheihen: foreign deities}.
9 And the LORD {YHWH, Covenant Judge} became angry with Solomon, because he had turned his heart away from the LORD, the God of Israel {Elohei Yisrael, National Protector}, who had appeared to him twice.
10 And He commanded him concerning this matter {davar: specific issue}, that he should not go after other gods, but he did not keep what the LORD {YHWH, Covenant Commander} had commanded.
11 And the LORD {YHWH, Righteous Judge} said to Solomon, “Because this has happened with you, and you have not kept My covenant {berit: sworn pact} and My statutes which I commanded upon you, I will surely tear the kingdom from upon you and I will give it to your servant.”
12 Nevertheless, in your days I {YHWH, Covenant Protector} will not do it for the sake of David your father; from the hand of your son I will tear {qara: forcibly rend} it.
13 Nevertheless, I will not tear away all the kingdom; I will give one tribe {shevet: hereditary clan} to your son for the sake of David my servant, and for the sake of Jerusalem {Yerushalayim: chosen sanctuary} which I have chosen.
14 And the LORD {YHWH, Sovereign Instigator} raised up an adversary {satan: opponent} against Solomon—Hadad the Edomite from the king’s lineage; he was in Edom.
15 And it happened when David struck Edom, and Joab the commander {sar: military commander} of the army went up to bury the slain {chalalim: corpses}, that he struck every male in Edom.
16 For six months Joab and all Israel stayed there until he had cut off {hikrit: complete extermination} every male in Edom {Edom: region south of Israel}.
17 But Hadad {hadad: surviving prince} himself fled, accompanied by some Edomite men from among his father’s servants to go to Egypt; for he was a young boy {na'ar: youthful stage}.
18 And they arose from Midian and came to Paran. They took men {anashim: companions} from Paran and went to Egypt to Pharaoh, king of Egypt. He gave him a house and bread {lechem: daily provision} and gave him land.
19 And Hadad found great favor {chen: gracious approval} in the eyes of Pharaoh, so he gave him as wife the sister of his own wife, the sister of Tahpenes the Lady {hagvirah: royal woman}.
20 And the sister of Tahpenes bore him a son, Genubath, whom Tahpenes weaned {tigmelehu: maternal nurture} in the house {beit: royal residence} of Pharaoh; and Genubath lived among the sons of Pharaoh.
21 And Hadad heard in Egypt that David had lain down with his fathers {avotav: joined his ancestors}, and that Joab, the commander {sar: chief} of the army, was dead. Then Hadad said to Pharaoh, “Send me, and I will go to my land.”
22 And Pharaoh said to him, “But what are you lacking {haser: lacking} with me that now you seek to go to your own land?” And he said, “Nothing; but certainly let me depart {lalechet: departure}.”
23 And God {Elohim, Sovereign Judge} raised up for him an adversary, Rezon son of Elyada, who had fled from his master, Hadadezer king of Zobah {tsovah: Aramean kingdom}.
24 And men gathered to him, and he became chief of a troop {gedud: fighting band}. When David killed {harog: violent slaying} them, they went to Damascus, dwelt there, and reigned in Damascus.
25 An adversary {satan: hostile force} was against Israel all the days of Solomon, and besides the harm {ha-raʿah: malicious deed} that Hadad did, he loathed Israel and reigned over Aram.
26 And Jeroboam {Yarav‘am: Adversary Raised} son of Nebat, an Ephraimite from Zeredah, whose mother was Zeruah, a widow {almanah: bereaved woman}, was a servant of Solomon, and he lifted his hand against the king.
27 And this is the matter for which he raised his hand {harim yad: idiom for revolt} against the king: Solomon built the Millo and closed up the breach {peretz: gap in wall} of the city of David his father.
28 And the man Jeroboam, a mighty man {gibor: man of prowess} of strength, and Solomon saw that the young man was doing the work, so he appointed him over all the forced labor {sevel: conscripted toil} of the house of Joseph.
29 And it happened at that time that Jeroboam went out from Jerusalem, and Ahijah {achiyah: brother of Yahweh} the Shilonite, the prophet, found him on the way. And he was clothed with a new cloak {salmah: protective outer garment}, and the two of them were alone in the field.
30 Then Ahijah {achiyah: sign prophet} took hold of the new garment that was on him and tore it into twelve pieces {qeraim: rended strips}.
31 And he said to Jeroboam, “Take for yourself ten pieces {qera‘im: torn fragments}, for thus says the LORD God of Israel {YHWH Elohei Yisrael, National Covenant-Maker}: Behold, I am tearing the kingdom from the hand of Solomon and will give you ten tribes.”
32 But one tribe shall be for him for the sake of My {YHWH, Covenant Guardian} servant David and for the sake of Jerusalem, the city which I have chosen {bacharti: selected by divine will} from all the tribes of Israel.
33 Because they have forsaken Me {YHWH, Covenant Keeper} and bowed down to Ashtoreth, the goddess of the Sidonians, to Chemosh, the god of Moab, and to Milkom, the god of the Ammonites, and they have not walked in My ways to do what is right in My eyes, nor kept My statutes {chukkotai: binding legal requirements} and My judgments as David his father did.
34 But I {YHWH, Covenant Upholder} will not remove the whole kingdom from his hand, for I will appoint him prince {nasi: appointed leader} all the days of his life for the sake of David my servant, whom I chose because he kept my commandments and my statutes.
35 And I {ani: Sovereign Deliverer} will take the kingdom {melukhah: royal authority} from his son’s hand and give it to you—the ten tribes.
36 And to his son I will give one tribe, so that there may be a lamp for David my servant {avdi: covenant representative} at all times before Me in Jerusalem, the city which I have chosen for Myself to set My name {shemi: divine presence} there.
37 I {YHWH, Throne-Giving Lord} will take you, and you shall reign over whatever your soul yearns for, and you shall be king over Israel {Yisrael: Twelve Tribes}.
38 And it shall be, if you listen to all that I {YHWH, Covenant Establishing} command you and walk in My ways and do what is right in My eyes, to keep My statutes {chukotai: binding ordinances} and My commandments as David My servant did, then I will be with you and will build for you a faithful house as I built for David, and will give Israel to you.
39 And I {YHWH, Just Discipliner} will afflict the seed of David {zera: dynastic heirs} for the sake of this, but not all the days.
40 And Solomon sought {vayevakkesh: initiative for death} to put Jeroboam to death, but Jeroboam arose and fled to Egypt, to Shishak {shishaq: Egyptian pharaoh} the king of Egypt, and he remained in Egypt until the death of Solomon.
41 And the rest {yeter: remaining portion} of the acts of Solomon, and all that he did, and his wisdom {chokhmah: exceptional understanding}, are they not written in the book of the acts of Solomon?
42 And the days that Solomon {Shelomoh: Peaceful One} reigned in Jerusalem over all Israel were forty years {shānâh: Annual Cycles}.
43 And Solomon lay down with his fathers {avotav: royal ancestors}, and he was buried in the city of David his father, and Rehoboam {rechavʿam: royal successor} his son reigned after him.
