1 And having summoned to Himself His twelve disciples, He {Iesous, Commissioning Lord} granted them authority {exousia: delegated authority} over unclean spirits so that they might cast them out and heal every disease and every affliction.
2 This is the list of the twelve apostles: Simon is first {protos: leading in rank} on the list, the one called Peter, and Andrew, his brother {adelphos: close male sibling}; James, son of Zebedee, and John, his brother.
3 Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector {telones: Roman Toll Officer}; James of Alphaeus {Halphaiou: Paternal Marker}; and Thaddaeus.
4 Simon the Cananaean {Kananaios: Zealous Associate} and Judas Iscariot, the one who also handed Him over {Iesous, Betrayed Messiah}.
5 These twelve Jesus {Iesous, Commissioning Teacher} sent out, after instructing them, saying, “Do not go onto the road {hodos: travel route} of the Gentiles, and do not enter a city of the Samaritans.”
6 But go {poreuomai: purposeful advance} rather to the sheep that are lost, belonging to the house {oikos: covenant family} of Israel.
7 As you go, proclaim {kerussete: publicly announce} this: “The kingdom of heaven {basileia ton ouranon: heavenly royal rule} has approached.”
8 Heal the sick {asthenountas: those ill}; raise the dead; purify the lepers {leprous: leprosy-stricken}; expel demons. Freely you received; freely give.
9 Do not acquire gold {chryson: precious wealth}, or silver, or copper to place in your belts {zonas: money pouches}.
10 Do not carry a bag {pera: travel pouch} on the road, nor two tunics, nor sandals, nor a staff, for the worker {ergates: laborer} is deserving of his food.
11 Into whichever city or village you may enter {eiselthete: set foot in}, make inquiry {exetasate: careful inquiry} as to who in it is worthy, and remain there until you leave.
12 As you enter {eiserchomenoi: upon arrival} the house, greet {aspasasthe: respectful welcome} it.
13 If the house is worthy {axia: fittingly receptive}, let your peace {eirene: covenant well-being} rest on it; but if it is not worthy, let your peace return to you.
14 And whoever does not accept {dexetai: offer welcome} you, and does not listen to your words, as you go out from that house or that city, shake away the dust {koniorton: travel dust} from your feet.
15 Truly {amēn: solemn certainty}, I say to you, it will be more bearable for the land {ge: judged territory} of Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that city.
16 Behold {idou: attention call}, I am dispatching you like sheep amid wolves; therefore, be prudent {phronimoi: alert judgment} as serpents and harmless as doves.
17 But be alert to people {anthropon: hostile opponents}, for they will hand you over to councils, and in their synagogues they will flog {mastigousin: harsh scourging} you.
18 And you will be taken before governors and kings because of Me {Iesous, Commissioning Lord}, to serve as a testimony to them and to the nations {ethnesin: Gentile Peoples}.
19 Yet whenever they hand you over {paradosin: hostile handover}, do not be anxious about how or what you are to speak, for in that hour {hora: appointed moment} the words you are to speak will be given to you.
20 For it is not you who are speaking, but the Spirit {Pneuma tou Patros, Speaking Presence} of your Father who is speaking in you {en hymin: within you}.
21 But a brother will hand over {paradosei: betray} a brother to death {thanatos: lethal end}, and a father will hand over his child, and children will rise up against parents and put them to death.
22 You will be hated by all because of My {Speaker's Authority} name {Revealed Identity}, but the one who endures to the end will be saved.
23 Whenever they persecute you in this city, flee to another city; for truly I say to you, you will certainly not finish passing through the cities {poleis: urban centers} of Israel until the Son of Man {huios tou anthropou, Coming Judge} comes.
24 No disciple is greater than the teacher {didaskalos: chief instructor}, nor is a servant {doulos: household attendant} greater than his master.
25 It is sufficient for the disciple {mathetes: committed learner} to become like his teacher, and the servant like his master. If they called the master of the house {oikodespotes: household head} Beelzebul, how much more will his household members be called that?
26 Therefore do not be afraid {phobēthēte: face danger without fear} of them, for nothing covered {kekalummenon: kept out of sight} will remain unrevealed, and nothing hidden will fail to be known.
27 What I {Iesous, Authoritative Teacher} tell you in the dark {skotia: concealed setting}, speak in the light; and what you hear in the ear, announce on the housetops.
28 Do not fear those who kill the body but are unable to kill the soul {psyche: inner life}; rather, fear the One who is able to destroy both soul and body in Gehenna {geenna: final judgment}.
29 Are not two sparrows sold for a coin {assariou: small Roman coin}? And not one of them will fall upon the ground apart from your Father {pater, Caring Provider}.
30 Yet even the hairs {triches: minute strands} on your head—all of them—have already been counted {erithmemenai: counted and known}.
31 Therefore, do not be afraid; you {hymeis: emphatic you} are worth more than many sparrows {strouthiōn: tiny birds}.
32 Therefore, everyone who publicly declares for Me {Iesous, Confessing Lord} in the sight of people, I also will declare for that person before My Father {Pater, Heavenly Judge} in the heavens.
33 But whoever repudiates Me {Iesous, Messianic Lord} before people, I also will repudiate him before My Father {patēr, Heavenly Judge} who is in the heavens.
34 Do not think that I {Iesous, Mission-Sent One} came to bring about peace {eirene: settled wholeness} on the earth; I did not come to bring about peace, but a sword.
35 For I {Iesous, Revealing True Allegiance} have come to divide {dixasai: set at odds} a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.
36 And a man's enemies {echthroi: hostile foes} are the people from his household {oikiakoi: home circle}.
37 The one who loves father or mother above Me {Iesous, Supreme Allegiance Claim} is not worthy {axios: fit for allegiance} of Me, and the one who loves son or daughter above Me is not worthy of Me.
38 And whoever does not take his cross and walk behind Me {Iesous, Discipleship Master} is not fit {axios: suitable, deserving} for Me.
39 The one who finds his life {psyche: whole self} will lose it, and the one who loses his life for My {emou, Discipleship Lord} sake will find it.
40 The one who accepts you accepts Me {Iesous, Represented Lord}, and the one who accepts Me accepts the One {Theos, Sending Father} who sent Me.
41 Anyone who receives {dechomenos: hospitable acceptance} a prophet in the name of a prophet will receive the reward belonging to a prophet {misthos: fitting recompense}, and anyone who receives a righteous person in the name of a righteous person will receive the reward belonging to a righteous person.
42 And whoever gives even only a cup of cold water to one of these little ones in the name of a disciple, truly I {Iesous, Authoritative Assurer} say to you, he will certainly not lose his reward {misthos: pledged recompense}.
