1 At that moment, once again a vast crowd had assembled and they lacked food; He {Iesous, Caring Provider} summoned the disciples {mathētas: devoted learners} to Himself and spoke to them.
2 I {Iesous, Compassionate Caregiver} have compassion for the crowd {ochlos: needy multitude}, because they have stayed with Me for three days, and they have nothing to eat.
3 If I {Iesous, Caring Shepherd} send them away to their homes without eating, they will faint along the way {hodos: travel route}; and some of them have come from far away.
4 His disciples answered Him {Iesous, Questioned Provider}, “Where could anyone find enough bread to feed {chortasai: provide sustenance} these people here in the wilderness?”
5 And He {Iesous, Compassionate Provider} was asking them, “How many loaves {artos: simple bread} do you have?” And they said, “Seven.”
6 And He {Iesous, Abundant Provider} ordered the crowd {ochlos: gathered multitude} to recline on the ground; then He took the seven loaves, gave thanks, broke them, and began giving them to His disciples so they could set them before the crowd.
7 They also had a few small fish {ichthydia: diminutive term}, and after He {Iesous, Abundant Provider} blessed them, He told them that these also should be set before them.
8 And they ate and were satisfied {echortasthesan: completely filled}, and they picked up seven baskets of the leftover fragments {perisseumata: extra portions}.
9 About four thousand {tetrakischilioi: large gathering} were there, and He {Iesous, Miracle Provider} sent them away.
10 Immediately {euthys: without delay} He {Iesous, Faithful Guide} got into the boat with His disciples and went to the region of Dalmanutha.
11 The Pharisees {Pharisaioi: strict religious party} came out and began disputing with Him {Iesous, Contested Sign Giver}, demanding from Him a sign from heaven in order to test Him.
12 Then, sighing deeply in His {Iesous, Grieved Son} spirit, He says, "Why is this generation {genea: unbelieving age} demanding a sign? Truly I say to you, a sign will not be given to this generation."
13 Leaving them behind, He {Iesous, Patient Departing Teacher} got into the boat {embas: boarding action} again and went away to the other side.
14 And they forgot to take loaves {artous: bread portions}; and except for one loaf, they had none with them in the boat {ploio: small vessel}.
15 He {Iesous, Divine Instructor} kept instructing them, saying, “Look out, and beware of the leaven {zyme: fermenting agent} of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod.”
16 They were reasoning {dielogizonto: careful deliberation} with one another that they did not have loaves {artous: bread portions}.
17 Knowing this, He {Iesous, Patient Instructor} said to them, “Why are you reasoning that you have no loaves? Do you still not perceive or understand? Have you hardened your heart {kardia: inner perception}?”
18 Though you have eyes, do you not see {blepete: perceive with insight}? And though you have ears, do you not hear? And do you not remember {mnemoneuete: call to mind consciously}?
19 “When I {Iesous, Faithful Provider} broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets {kophinous: hand-baskets for carrying food} full of fragments did you take up?” They said to Him, “Twelve.”
20 “And when the seven loaves were for the four thousand, how many basketfuls of fragments {klasmaton: broken pieces} did you pick up?” And they said to Him {Iesous, Patient Teacher}, “Seven.”
21 Then He {Iesous, Probing Teacher} said to them, “Do you still not understand {suniete: grasp together with perception}?”
22 They came to Bethsaida, and people brought to Him {Iesous, Compassionate Healer} a blind man and begged Him so that He might touch {hapsetai: healing touch} him.
23 Taking the blind man by the hand {kheiros: guiding touch}, He {Iesous, Compassionate Healer} led him outside the village; then He spat into his eyes and laid His hands on him, and He asked him, “Do you see anything?”
24 He looked up and said, “I see the people as trees {dendra: large plants} walking {peripatountas: moving about}.”
25 Then again He {Iesous, Persistent Healer} laid His hands on his eyes; he looked intently {dieblepsen: regained sharp sight}, his sight was restored, and he saw everything distinctly.
26 And He {Iesous, Discreet Commander} sent him to his house, saying, “Do not even enter the village {kome: nearby settlement}.”
27 Jesus {Iesous, Revealing Messiah} went out with His disciples into the villages of Caesarea Philippi; and on the road He questioned His disciples, “Whom do people {anthropoi: humanity} say that I am?”
28 They answered Him {Iesous, Questioned Messiah}, “John the Baptist; and others say Elijah; and others, one of the prophets {propheton: inspired spokesmen}.”
29 Then He asked them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter {Petros: leading disciple} responded to Him, “You are the Christ {Christos: Confessed Messiah}.”
30 And He {Iesous, Revealed Messiah} strictly instructed {epetīmēsen: issued a firm command} them to tell no one about Him.
31 He {Iesous, Suffering Messiah} began teaching them that the Son of Man must undergo many sufferings, be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, be killed, and after three days rise again {anastenai: rise from death}.
32 He {Iesous, Open Revealer} was speaking that message {logon: spoken declaration} openly; and Peter, taking Him aside, began to rebuke Him.
33 But after turning and looking at His disciples, He rebuked Peter and said, “Go behind Me {Iesous, Sovereign Lord}, Satan! For you are not thinking the things of God {Theos, Divine Intent}, but the things of men.”
34 Calling the crowd together with His disciples, He {Iesous, Messianic Teacher} said to them, “If anyone wants to come after Me, let him deny himself, take up his cross {stavron: shameful suffering}, and keep following Me.”
35 For whoever seeks to save his life {psuche: inner self} will lose it; but whoever loses his life for My {Iesous, Self Giving Redeemer} sake and the gospel will save it.
36 For what benefit {ophelei: yield benefit} is it to a man to gain the whole world, yet lose his soul {psyche: inner life force}?
37 For what might a man tender as payment {antallagma: price offered} for his soul {psyche: essential life}?
38 For anyone ashamed of Me {Iesous, Suffering Son} and of My words in this adulterous and sinful generation {genea: morally corrupt era}, the Son of Man {huios tou anthropou, Righteous Judge} will be ashamed of that person when He comes in His Father’s {pater, Radiant Source} glory with the holy angels.
