1 And the LORD {YHWH, Covenant Instructor} said to Moses and to Aaron in the land {erets: territory} of Egypt, saying,
2 This month {chodesh: new lunar period} shall be for you the head {rosh: chief starting point} of months; it shall be the first for you among the months of the year.
3 Speak to all the congregation of Israel, saying: On the tenth of this month {chodesh: new moon period}, each man shall take for himself a lamb {seh: young sheep or kid} for the house of his father and for his household.
4 And if the house is too small to have a lamb, then he and his neighbor who is nearest to his house shall take it according to the number {miksat: assigned count} of persons; each man according to his eating {okhlo: portion share} you shall calculate regarding the lamb.
5 The animal {seh: sacrificial creature} must be without blemish {tamim: ritual standard}, a one-year-old male. You shall take it from the sheep or from the goats.
6 And it shall be kept {lemishmeret: watchful safeguard} for you until the fourteenth day of this month; then the entire assembly of the congregation of Israel shall slaughter it between the evenings {ha-arbayim: period at dusk}.
7 And they shall take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts {mezuzot: vertical supports} and on the lintel {mashkof: top beam} of the houses in which they eat the lamb.
8 And they shall eat the meat{basar: sacrificial flesh} on this night, roasted by fire{tseli-esh: roasted with fire}; and with unleavened bread and bitter herbs they shall eat it.
9 Do not eat any of it raw {nā: uncooked flesh} or boiled in water, but only roasted over fire—its head, its legs, and its inward parts {qirbo: inner organs}.
10 And you shall not leave {totiru: permit to remain} any of it until morning; and you shall burn {tishrofu: full consumption} what remains until morning in fire.
11 And thus you shall eat it with your loins girded, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and you shall eat it in haste—it is the Passover {pesakh: protective sacrifice} of the LORD {YHWH, Redeemer}.
12 And I {ani: personal pronoun} will pass through the land of Egypt in this night, and I will strike down every firstborn in the land of Egypt, from human to animal, and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments. I am the LORD {YHWH, Supreme Judge}.
13 And the blood shall be for you as a sign {ot: distinguishing sign} on the houses where you are; and when I {YHWH, Passover Protector} see the blood, I will pass over you. No plague for destruction shall be among you when I strike in the land of Egypt.
14 And this day shall be for you a memorial {zikaron: act of remembrance}, and you shall celebrate it as a festival to the LORD {YHWH, Redeemer}. Throughout your generations it is a statute forever—you shall celebrate it.
15 For seven days you shall eat unleavened bread {matsot: bread without leaven}, but on the first day you shall remove leaven {seor: fermenting agent} from your houses. Whoever eats leavened bread shall be cut off from Israel from the first day until the seventh day.
16 And on the first day there shall be a sacred convocation {mikra: public convocation} for you, and on the seventh day there shall be a sacred convocation for you; no work of any kind shall be done on those days, except that which each person {nefesh: individual being} may eat, and that alone may be prepared for you.
17 And you shall keep the unleavened bread {matsot: bread without yeast} observance, for on this very day I {YHWH, Deliverer} brought out your divisions from the land of Egypt. And you shall keep this day for your generations as an eternal statute.
18 In the first month {barishon: festival month}, on the fourteenth day of the month at evening, you shall eat unleavened bread {matsot: bread without yeast}, until the twenty-first day of the month at evening.
19 For seven days no leaven {se-or: fermenting agent} shall be found in your houses; if anyone eats what is leavened, the soul {nefesh: life essence} shall be cut off from the congregation of Israel, whether among the sojourner or among the native-born of the land.
20 You shall not eat any leavened thing {machmetset: anything with yeast}—in all your dwellings {moshvoteikhem: every place you live}, you shall eat unleavened bread.
21 Then Moses {Mosheh: Deliverer} called for all the elders of Israel and said to them, “Draw out and take for yourselves sheep for your families, and slaughter the Passover {ha-pasach: festival offering}.”
22 And you shall take a bundle of hyssop {ezov: purifying branch} and dip it into the blood in the basin, and you shall apply it to the lintel and to the two doorposts from the blood in the basin; and none of you shall go out from the entrance of his house until morning {boker: daybreak time}.
23 And the LORD {YHWH, Covenant Protector} will pass through to strike Egypt, and the LORD will see the blood on the lintel {mashqof: top beam} and on the two doorposts. Then the LORD will pass over the entrance, and the LORD will not permit the destroyer to enter your houses to strike you.
24 And you shall keep this matter {davar: specific instruction} as a statute {choq: established decree} for you and your sons forever.
25 And it shall come to pass, when you enter into the land which the LORD {YHWH, Faithful Promise-Keeper} will give to you, as He spoke, that you shall keep this service {avodah: appointed ritual}.
26 And it shall be, when your sons {beneichem: future questioners} say to you, “What is this service {avodah: prescribed ritual} to you?”
27 And you shall say, “It is the Passover sacrifice to the LORD {YHWH, Redeemer}, who passed over the houses of the sons of Israel in Egypt when He struck the Egyptians but delivered {ḥiṣīl: rescued homes} our houses.” Then the people bowed down and worshiped.
28 And the sons {benei: covenant community} of Israel went and did just as the LORD {YHWH, Covenant Commander} commanded Moses and Aaron—so they did.
29 And it happened at midnight that the LORD {YHWH, Righteous Judge} struck all the firstborn {bekhor: eldest offspring} in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh who sat on his throne, to the firstborn of the captive who was in the prison-house; and all the firstborn of the livestock.
30 And Pharaoh arose at night {layla: Nighttime} with all his servants and all the Egyptians, and there was a great cry in Egypt, for there was not a house {bayit: Family Dwelling} where there was not someone dead.
31 And he called to Moses and to Aaron at night and said, “Rise up! Go forth from among my people, both you and the sons of Israel; go serve the LORD {YHWH, Deliverance Enactor} as you have spoken {kedabberkhem: as you declared}.”
32 Also take {ke-khu: direct command} your flocks and your herds, as you have said, and go; and bless {u-verakh-tem: invoke reciprocal favor} me also.
33 And Egypt pressed {khazaq: forceful urgency} upon the people to hurry and send them from the land, for they said, “All of us are dying {metim: subject to death}.”
34 And the people carried their dough before it was leavened, their kneading bowls {misharotam: bread-making vessels} bound up {tserurot: securely tied bundles} in their garments on their shoulders.
35 And the sons of Israel did as Moses {Mosheh: Deliverer} commanded, and they requested from the Egyptians vessels of silver, vessels of gold, and garments {smalot: Outer Garments}.
36 And the LORD{YHWH, Faithful Deliverer} gave the people favor{hen: gracious acceptance} in the eyes of the Egyptians, so that they gave them what they requested; and they plundered Egypt.
37 And the sons of Israel journeyed {vayisa'u: orchestrated departure} from Ra‘meses to Sukkoth, about six hundred thousand men on foot, besides {levad: exclusive separation} children.
38 And also a mixed multitude {erev: diverse assembly} went up with them, and flocks and cattle, livestock {mikneh: acquired property} very numerous.
39 And they baked the dough which they had brought out of Egypt into cakes of unleavened bread {matsot: bread without leaven}, for it had not become leavened because they had been driven out of Egypt and could not delay; and they had not prepared any provision {tsedah: journey supplies} for themselves.
40 And the dwelling {moshav: settled habitation} of the sons of Israel in Egypt was 430 years {shana: measured period}.
41 When the 430 years {shanah: complete cycles} were complete, on this very day all the hosts of the LORD {YHWH, Delivering Commander} went out from the land of Egypt.
42 It is a night of watchfulness {shimmurim: ritual vigil} for the LORD {YHWH, Deliverer} to bring them out from the land of Egypt. This is that night kept by all the sons of Israel in their generations.
43 And the LORD {YHWH, Covenant Legislator} said to Moses and Aaron, “This is the statute {chukat: unchanging decree} of the Passover: No foreigner shall eat of it.”
44 But any man’s slave bought with money, after you have circumcised {mul: covenant initiation} him, then he may eat of the offering {bo: Passover sacrifice}.
45 A resident alien {toshav: one dwelling temporarily} and a hired worker {sakhir: paid laborer} shall not eat of it.
46 It shall be eaten in one house {bayit: Passover dwelling}; you shall not bring any of the flesh out of the house, and you shall not break a bone {etsem: sacrificial wholeness} in it.
47 All the assembly {adat: covenant community} of Israel shall do it {oto: Passover regulation}.
48 And when a sojourner {ger: resident foreigner} sojourns with you and keeps the Passover to the LORD {YHWH, Covenant Redeemer}, let every male in his household be circumcised, then he may draw near to observe it; he shall be like a native of the land, and no uncircumcised person may eat of it.
49 One law {torah: binding instruction} shall be for the native-born and for the sojourner {ger: resident foreigner} who sojourns among you.
50 And all the sons of Israel did just as the LORD {YHWH, Law-Giver} commanded Moses {Mosheh: deliverer} and Aaron; so they did.
