1 Truly, truly, I say to you, anyone who does not enter through the door {thyras: rightful access point} into the courtyard {aulen: sheep enclosure} of the sheep, but climbs up from elsewhere, that one is a thief and a robber.
2 But the one entering through the doorway is the shepherd {poimen: caring guardian} of the sheep {probaton: entrusted flock}.
3 The doorkeeper {thuroros: gate guardian} opens for this one, and the sheep heed His {Iesous, Calling Shepherd} voice; He calls His own sheep by name and leads them out.
4 Whenever He {Iesous, True Shepherd} brings out all His own, He goes before them, and the sheep follow Him because they know His voice {phone: recognizable sound}.
5 They will not at all follow an outsider, but will flee {pheugo: sudden retreat} from him, because they have no acquaintance with the voice {phone: identifying sound} of outsiders.
6 This parable {paroimian: symbolic saying} Jesus {Iesous, Patient Teacher} spoke to them, but they did not discern what it was that He was saying to them.
7 Therefore Jesus {Iesous, Authoritative Speaker} said to them again, “Amen, amen, I declare to you, I am the sheep gate {thyra: exclusive entry}.”
8 All who came before Me {Iesous, True Shepherd} are thieves {kleptai: covert stealers} and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them.
9 I {ego eimi: Emphatic Sovereign Claim} am the door {thyra: Sole Entrance}; through Me, if anyone enters, he will be saved, and he will go in and go out and will find pasture.
10 The thief comes for no purpose other than to steal, to kill, and to destroy; I {Iesous, Source Of Life} came so that they might have life and have it abundantly {perisson: overflowing abundance}.
11 I {Iesous, Sacrificial Shepherd} am the good shepherd; the good shepherd gives over His life {psyche: whole self} on behalf of the sheep.
12 The hired worker {misthotos: paid laborer}, who is no shepherd and to whom the sheep do not belong, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep behind and flees, and the wolf seizes them and scatters {skorpizei: breaks apart} them.
13 He flees because he is a hired hand {misthotos: wage worker}, and the sheep {probaton: flock animals} do not matter to him.
14 I {Iesous, Self-Identifying Speaker} am the good shepherd {poimēn: Devoted Caretaker}; I know My own, and My own know Me.
15 Just as the Father {Pater, All-Knowing Father} knows Me {Iesous, Self-Giving Shepherd}, and I know the Father, and I lay down My life for the sheep.
16 And I {Iesous, Unifying Shepherd} have other sheep that are not from this fold {aule: present enclosure}; those too I must bring, and they will hear My voice, and they will become one flock, one shepherd.
17 That is why the Father {pater, Approving Father} loves Me: because I lay down My life {psyche: Whole Self} so that I may receive it once more.
18 No one removes it from Me, but I {Iesous, Voluntary Self-Giver} lay it down on My own. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it again. This commandment I received from My Father {Pater, Command-Giving Father}.
19 A division {schisma, sharp split} occurred again among the Jews {Ioudaiois, Judean people} because of these words.
20 But many of them were saying, “He {Iesous, Rejected Shepherd} has a demon {daimonion: evil spirit} and is deranged; why are you listening to Him?”
21 Others were saying, “These are not the words of one who is demonized {daimonizomenou: hostile spiritual control}. Can a demon {daimonion: hostile spirit} open the eyes of the blind?”
22 Then the temple rededication {enkainia: temple renewal} occurred in Jerusalem, and it was winter {cheimon: cold season}.
23 And Jesus {Iesous, Sacred Presence} was walking about in the temple {hieron: sacred precincts}, in Solomon's portico.
24 Therefore the Jews {Ioudaioi: Judean Opponents} surrounded Him and were saying to Him, “How long will You keep us in doubt? If You are the Christ {Christos, Long-awaited Messiah}, tell us openly.”
25 Jesus {Iesous, Authoritative Speaker} responded to them, “I told you already, and you do not believe. The works I do in My Father’s {patros, Authorizing Father} name—these serve as evidence about Me.”
26 But you do not believe, because you are not from My {Iesous, Knowing Shepherd} sheep {probaton: covenant flock}.
27 My own sheep hear My voice, and I {Guiding Shepherd} know them, and they are following {akoloutheo: walk behind as disciples} Me.
28 And I {Iesous, Protective Shepherd} give them everlasting life, and they will in no way come to ruin, and no one will wrench them from My hand {cheir: protecting hold}.
29 My Father {pater, Covenant Protector}, who has given them to Me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch {harpazo: Forceful Seizure} them out of the Father's hand.
30 I {Iesous, Divine Son} and the Father {pater, Co-Equal Source} are one.
31 Therefore the Jews {Ioudaioi, Hostile Opponents} once again picked up stones, intending to stone Him {Iesous, Targeted Messiah}.
32 Jesus {Iesous, Faithful Witness} replied to them, “I displayed many noble deeds {erga: beneficial works} to you from the Father; for the sake of which one of those deeds are you stoning Me?”
33 The Jews answered Him {Iesous, Opposed Jesus}, “We are not stoning You on account of a good work, but on account of blasphemy, and because You, being a man, make Yourself God {Theos, Claimed Equality}.”
34 Jesus {Iesous, Faithful Scripture Interpreter} replied to them, “Has it not been recorded in your Law {nomos: Torah teaching}, ‘I said, You are gods’?”
35 If He described them as gods {theous: Human Judges}, to whom the word of God {Theos, Covenant Speaker} came, and the Scripture cannot be invalidated;
36 Do you say this of Him whom the Father {pater, Consecrating Father} sanctified and sent into the world, “You are blaspheming,” because I said, “I am the Son of God {Huios tou theou, Claimed Divine Son}”?
37 If I {Iesous, Obedient Son} do not perform the works of My Father {pater, Source of Works}, do not believe Me.
38 But if I {Iesous, Revealing Son} do, even if you do not believe Me, believe the works, so that you may come to know and discern that the Father {Pater, Indwelling Source} is in Me, and I am in the Father.
39 Therefore they were again seeking to seize Him {Iesous, Safeguarded One}, but He went out from their hand {cheir: control}.
40 And He {Iesous, Returning Lord} departed again to the far side of the Jordan into the place {topos: known site} where John was baptizing at first, and He remained there.
41 And many came to Him {Iesous, Attested Messiah}, and they were saying, “John indeed performed no sign {semeion: confirming act}, but everything that John said about this man was true.”
42 And many believed in Him {Iesous, Revealed Messiah} there {ekei: that specific place}.
