1 Now there was a certain man named Lazarus who was ill; he was from Bethany {Bethania: Place Name}, from the village of Mary and her sister {adelphes: Female Sibling} Martha.
2 Now Mary {Mariam: Anointing Witness} was the one who had anointed the Lord {Kyrios, Anointing Recipient} with ointment and had wiped His feet with her hair; Lazarus, her brother, was ill.
3 Therefore the sisters sent an appeal to Him, saying, “Lord {Kyrie, Trusted Lord}, look, the one whom You love {phileis: affectionate regard} is ill.”
4 After hearing it, Jesus {Iesous, Purpose-Aware Lord} said, “This illness {astheneia: weakening affliction} is not on course for death, but for the glory {doxa: radiant honor} of God {Theos, Glory Recipient}, so that the Son of God {huios tou theou, Destined For Glory} may be glorified through it.”
5 Now Jesus {Iesous, Compassionate Lord} continued to love Martha, her sister {adelphen: female sibling}, and Lazarus.
6 So when He {Iesous, Purposeful Waiting} heard that he was ill {asthenei: bodily weakness}, He remained two days longer in the place where He was.
7 Then, after this, He says to the disciples {mathētai: close followers}, “Let us make our way into Judea once more {palin: another time}.”
8 The disciples addressed Him {Iesous, Steadfast Master}, “Rabbi {rhabbi: Honored Jewish Instructor}, the Jews were seeking to stone You; are You going there once more?”
9 Jesus {Iesous, Wise Guide} answered, “The day has twelve hours {horai: daylight span}, does it not? If anyone walks in daylight, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world.”
10 But if anyone walks in the night {nykti: time of darkness}, he stumbles, because the light {phos: inner illumination} is not in him.
11 These things He {Iesous, Revealing Resurrection Hope} said, and after this He says to them, “Lazarus, our friend {philos: cherished companion}, has gone to sleep; but I am going so that I may awaken him.”
12 Therefore the disciples said to Him, “Lord {Kyrios, Revered Master}, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover {sothesetai: bodily recovery}.”
13 However, Jesus {Iesous, Lord Over Death} had spoken about his death, but they thought He was referring to sleep {koimesis: bodily rest}.
14 Then Jesus {Iesous, Truth-Revealing Lord} said to them plainly {parresia: open speech}, “Lazarus has died.”
15 And for your sake I {Iesous, Compassionate Teacher} am glad that I was not there, so that you may believe; but let us go to him {Lazaros: Jesus’ friend}.
16 Therefore Thomas, the one called Didymus {Didymos: Twin}, said to the fellow disciples, “Let us also go, so that we may die with Him {Iesous, Under Threat}.”
17 Therefore, when Jesus {Iesous, Resurrection Revealer} came, He found him {auton: Lazarus} already in the tomb {mnemeion: burial chamber} for four days.
18 Bethany was situated close to Jerusalem {Hierosolymon: Holy City}, about fifteen stadia {stadion: Ancient Distance Unit} away.
19 And many from among the Jews {Ioudaioi: Judean people} had come to Martha and Mary, so that they might console them concerning their brother {adelphos: male sibling}.
20 Therefore, when Martha {Martha: Grieving Sister} heard that Jesus {Iesous, Compassionate Visitor} was coming, she went to meet Him, but Mary remained seated in the house.
21 Then Martha said to Jesus {Iesous, Present Help}, “Lord {Kyrios, Revered Master}, had You been present, my brother would not have died.”
22 Yet even now I know that whatever {hosa: any request} you might ask of God {Theos, Attentive Hearer}, God will bestow it on you.
23 Jesus {Iesous, Resurrection Proclaimer} says to her, “Your brother {adelphos: close kin} will rise again.”
24 Martha said to Him, “I know that he will rise in the resurrection {anastasis: bodily rising} on the last day {eschate hemera: final appointed time}.”
25 Jesus {Iesous, Resurrection Revealer} said to her, “I am the resurrection {anastasis: bodily rising again} and the life. Whoever believes in Me, even if he should die, will live.”
26 And everyone who is living and believing in Me {Iesous, Resurrection Life Giver} will certainly not die forever {aiona: endless age}. Do you believe this?
27 She said to Him, “Yes, Lord {Kyrios, Confessed Messiah}; I have believed that You are the Christ {Christos, Promised Deliverer}, the Son of God {huios tou theou, Divine Son}, the One who is coming into the world.”
28 And when she had said this, she went away and called Mary, her sister, in secret {lathra: out of public view}, saying, “The Teacher {didaskalos, Present Comforting Guide} is here and is calling for you.”
29 But she, when she heard, arose quickly {tachy: without hesitation} and came to Him {Iesous, Summoning Teacher}.
30 Now Jesus {Iesous, Resurrection Revealer} had not yet come into the village, but He was still in the place where Martha {Martha: earnest believer} met Him.
31 Therefore the Jews who were with her in the house and were comforting {paramythoumenoi: providing consolation} her, having seen that Mary arose quickly and went out, followed her, supposing that she was going to the tomb {mnemeion: family burial site} in order that she might weep there.
32 Therefore, when Mary came to the place where Jesus was and saw Him, she fell at His feet, saying to Him, “Lord {Kyrios, Compassionate Listener}, if You had been here, my brother {adelphos: family bond} would not have died.”
33 Jesus {Iesous, Compassionate Messiah} therefore, when He saw her weeping and the Jews who had come with her weeping, He was deeply moved in spirit {pneuma: inner depths} and troubled Himself.
34 And He said, “Where have you laid him?” They said to Him, “Lord {Kyrie, Compassionate Master}, come and see {ide: witness directly}.”
35 Jesus {Iesous, Compassionate Son} wept {edakrysen: shed tears with deep feeling}.
36 Therefore the Jews {Ioudaioi: nearby mourners} were saying, “See how He {Iesous, Compassionate Mourner} was loving him!”
37 But some of them said, “Could not this one who opened the eyes {ophthalmous: vision organs} of the blind {typhlou: sightless person} have done something so that even this one would not have died?”
38 Then Jesus {Iesous, Compassionate Mourner} again, being deeply moved in Himself, comes to the tomb {mnemeion: burial place}; and it was a cave, and a stone was lying upon it.
39 Jesus {Iesous, Resurrection Revealer} said, “Take away the stone {lithon: burial barrier}.” Martha, the sister of the one who had died {teteleutekotos: deceased person}, said to Him, “Lord {Kyrie, Revered Master}, by now he gives off an odor, for he has been dead four days.”
40 Jesus {Iesous, Resurrection Assurer} said to her, “Did I not say to you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God {Theos, Glory Revealer}?”
41 So they took away the stone. But Jesus {Iesous, Resurrection Revealer} lifted up His eyes and said, “Father {Pater, Divine Listener}, I thank You that You have heard Me.”
42 But I knew that You {Theos, Prayer-Hearing Father} always hear Me, yet because of the crowd standing around I said this, so that they may believe {pisteuo: come to trust} that You sent Me.
43 And after saying these things, He {Iesous, Resurrection Commander} cried out with a loud voice {phone: urgent summons}, "Lazarus, come out!"
44 The one who had died came out, bound hand and foot with bandages {keiriais: linen burial strips}, and his face had been wrapped with a cloth. Jesus {Iesous, Resurrection Commander} said to them, “Release him and let him go.”
45 Therefore, many of the Jews who had come to Mary and had seen what He {Iesous, Life-Restoring Lord} did believed {episteusan: responsive trust} in Him.
46 But some of them went away to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus {Iesous, Wonder Working Rabbi} had done {epoiesen: miraculous deeds}.
47 Therefore the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered the council {synedrion: ruling body} and were saying, “What are we doing, because this man is performing many signs {semeia: miraculous evidences}?”
48 If we let Him {Iesous, Sign-Working Messiah} continue like this, everyone will believe in Him, and the Romans will come and take away our place {topos: temple complex} and our nation.
49 But one of them, Caiaphas {Kaiaphas: presiding priest}, who was high priest {archiereus: chief temple official} that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all,”
50 Nor do you consider that it is advantageous {sympherei: beneficial outcome} for you that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation {ethnos: distinct people} not perish.
