1 And, as He {Iesous, Attentive Lord} was moving along, He saw a man blind from birth {genetes: lifelong condition}.
2 And His {Iesous, Belonging To Jesus} disciples asked Him, saying, “Rabbi, whose sin lay behind this—this man’s or his parents’—that he was born blind {typhlos: Without Physical Sight}?”
3 Jesus {Iesous, Wise Corrector} answered, "This was not because this man sinned, nor because his parents sinned; rather, it was so that the works of God {Theos, Revealing Purpose} might be shown in him."
4 We must carry out the works {erga: commissioned deeds} of the One who sent Me {Iesous, Sent Son}, as long as it is day; night is approaching, when no one can work.
5 Whenever I {Iesous, Revealing Light} am in the world, I am light {phos: Source of Revelation} for the world.
6 After He spoke these words {tauta: spoken words}, He spat on the ground and fashioned clay {pelon: shaped earth} out of the spittle, and He smoothed the clay over his eyes.
7 And He {Iesous, Guiding Healer} said to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam (which is translated ‘Sent’ {apestalmenos: one sent}).” So he went away and washed, and came back seeing {blepōn: restored sight}.
8 Therefore the neighbors {geitones: nearby residents} and the ones who had seen him before as a beggar {prosaites: alms-seeker} were saying, “Could this be the man sitting and begging?”
9 Some {alloi: divided crowd} were saying, “This is the one.” Others were saying, “No, but he is similar to him.” That one {ekeinos: the speaker} was saying, “I am.”
10 So they kept asking {elegon: repeated questioning} him, “In what way were your eyes {ophthalmoi: bodily sight} opened?”
11 He replied, “The man known as Jesus {Iesous, Sight-Bringing Healer} formed clay, spread it over my eyes {ophthalmous: sightless eyes}, and told me, ‘Go to Siloam and wash.’ So I went off and washed, and my sight returned.”
12 And they said to him, “Where is he {ekeinos: Jesus}?” He says, “I do not know {oida: settled knowledge}.”
13 They are bringing him to the Pharisees {Pharisaious: religious leaders}, the one who had been blind {typhlos: without sight} before.
14 It was a Sabbath {sabbaton: Sacred Rest Day} on that day when Jesus {Iesous, Merciful Restorer} formed the clay and opened his eyes.
15 Therefore the Pharisees {Pharisaioi: religious sect} asked him again how sight had returned to him. He said to them, “He laid clay {pelon: molded earth} on my eyes, and I washed, and now I see.”
16 Therefore some of the Pharisees kept saying, "This man is not from God {Theos, Contested Commission}, because He does not keep the Sabbath {sabbaton: Covenant Rest}." Others kept saying, "How is a man who is a sinner able to do such signs?" And a division arose among them.
17 So they questioned the blind man once more, “What do you say about Him {Iesous, Eye-Opening Healer}, since He opened your eyes {ophthalmous: organs of sight}?” But he answered, “He is a prophet.”
18 Therefore the Jews {Ioudaioi: Judean authorities} did not accept that he had been blind and had regained sight, until they summoned his parents, the parents of the one who had regained sight {anablepsantos: restored vision}.
19 And they asked them, saying, “This is your son {huios: family relation}, the one you say was blind {typhlos: lacking sight} from birth? How is it, then, that he sees now?”
20 Then {oun: inferential link} his parents responded and said, "We are certain that this is our son and that he came into the world blind {tuphlos: lacking sight}."
21 How he sees now, we do not know, nor do we know who opened his eyes {ophthalmous: physical sight}. Question him; he has reached adulthood {helikian: legal maturity}. He will speak on his own behalf.
22 His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jews {Ioudaioi: synagogue authorities}; for the Jews had already settled that if anyone should confess Him as the Christ {Christos, Promised Messiah}, that person would be barred from the synagogue.
23 For this reason his parents {goneis: close family} said, “He has reached adulthood {helikia: full maturity}; inquire of him.”
24 Therefore they summoned the man who had been blind a second time and said to him, “Give glory {doxan: public honor} to God {Theos, All-Seeing Judge}; we know that this man is a sinner.”
25 He answered, therefore, "Whether He {Iesous, Questioned Teacher} is a sinner {hamartolos: sinful one} I do not know; the only thing I know is this: though blind, I now see."
26 Then {oun: inferential link} they said to him, "What did he do to you? In what way did he open your eyes {ophthalmous: sight organs}?"
27 He answered them, “I told you already, and you did not listen. Why are you asking to hear it again? Do you also want to become His {autou: the one in question} disciples {mathētai: committed followers}?”
28 They reviled {eloidoresan: bitter abuse} him and said, "You are a disciple of that one; but we are disciples of Moses {Moyseos: covenant lawgiver}."
29 We know that God {Theos, Covenant Revealer} has spoken to Moses, but as for this man, his origin {pothen: hidden source} is unknown to us.
30 The man answered them and said, “The astonishing {thaumaston: striking fact} point in this is that you do not know where He {Iesous, Heaven-Sent One} is from, and still He opened my eyes.”
31 We know that God {Theos, Righteous Hearer} does not heed sinners, but if anyone is God-fearing and carries out His will {thelema: Sacred Purpose}, He hears that one.
32 From the start of the age {aionos: earliest era}, it has never been heard {akouo: reported at all} that anyone opened the eyes of a person blind from birth.
33 If this man {houtos: the man in view} had not been from God {Theos, Divine Source}, He would have lacked the ability to do anything.
34 They answered and said to him, “Altogether {holos: without exception} you were born in sins, and you are teaching {didaskeis: claim authority} us?” And they cast him out.
35 Jesus {Iesous, Compassionate Seeker} heard that they had expelled him outside, and after finding him, He said, “Do You believe in the Son of Man {huios tou anthropou: Messianic Figure}?”
36 He answered and said, "Sir {Kyrios, Revered Master}, who then is He, so that I may believe {pisteuso: wholehearted trust} in Him?"
37 Jesus {Iesous, Identity-Revealing Savior} said to him, “You have seen Him already, and the one conversing {lalon: speaking directly} with you is He.”
38 Then he spoke, “Lord {Kyrios, Recognized Master}, I believe {pisteuō: place my trust},” and he worshiped Him.
39 And Jesus {Iesous, Verdict Proclaimer} said, “I came into this present world {kosmos: human order} with judgment in view, so that those lacking sight may see, and those who see may become blind.”
40 Some of the Pharisees who were with Him {met autou: in His company} heard these things and said to Him, “Then are we blind {typhloi: without sight} as well?”
41 Jesus {Iesous, Righteous Judge} said to them, "If you were blind {typhloi: lacking spiritual sight}, no sin would be charged to you; but now you declare, 'We see'; your sin remains."
