1 And Jesus {Iesous, Spirit-Led Son}, full of the Holy Spirit {pneuma hagion, Divine Guide}, came back from the Jordan, and the Spirit was leading Him in the wilderness.
2 For forty days He {Iesous, Faithful Tested Son} was being tempted by the devil {diabolos: hostile tempter}; He ate nothing during those days, and when those days ended, He grew hungry.
3 Then the devil said to Him, “If You are the Son of God {Theos, Heavenly Father}, tell this stone {lithō: Testing Obstacle} to become bread.”
4 And Jesus {Iesous, Obedient Son} answered him, “It is written: ‘A man shall not live by bread {arto: essential sustenance} alone.’”
5 And he led Him {Iesous, Tempted Messiah} up and displayed to Him all the kingdoms of the inhabited world {oikoumene: known populated earth} in a moment of time.
6 And the devil said to Him {Christos, Tempted One}, “I will give You all this authority and their glory {doxa: Realm-Wide Honor}, because it has been handed over to me, and I give it to whomever I desire.”
7 So if you worship {proskyneses: reverent bowing} before me {emou: the tempter}, it will all be yours.
8 And Jesus {Iesous, Faithful Scripture Witness} answered him, “It is written, ‘You shall worship {proskyneseis: humble adoration} the Lord {Kyrios, Only Worshiped One} your God {Theos, Covenant Redeemer}, and Him only shall you serve.’”
9 And the devil took Him into Jerusalem, set Him on the pterygion {pterygion: elevated edge} of the temple, and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God {Huios Theou, Challenged Sonship}, cast Yourself down from here.”
10 For it is written, “He {Theos, Divine Protector} will give His angels {angelos: messenger spirits} orders about you, to guard you carefully.”
11 And they will carry you upon their hands, lest you strike your foot {pous: grounded limb} against a stone {lithos: rocky obstacle}.
12 And Jesus {Iesous, Obedient Son} answered him, “It has been said, ‘You shall not test {ekpeiraseis: put to the proof} the Lord your God {Kyrios Theos, Covenant Lord}.’”
13 And when the devil {diabolos: slandering tempter} had finished every temptation, he went away from Him {Christos, Victorious One} until an opportune time.
14 And Jesus {Iesous, Spirit-Anointed Son} returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit {pneuma, Empowering Presence}, and word about Him spread through the whole surrounding region.
15 And He {Iesous, Revered Teacher} was teaching in their synagogues {synagogais: Jewish gathering places}, and all were giving Him honor.
16 And He {Christos, Obedient Son} came to Nazara, where He had been brought up; and according to His custom, on the Sabbath day {sabbaton: seventh day rest} He went into the synagogue and stood up to read.
17 And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to Him {Iesous, Anointed Teacher}; and after unrolling the scroll {biblion: parchment scroll}, He located the passage where it was written.
18 The Spirit of the Lord {Pneuma Kyriou, Anointing Power} is upon me, because He has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives {aichmalotois: persons held captive} and sight to the blind, and to send those who are broken into freedom.
19 To proclaim the acceptable year {eniauton: appointed season} of the Lord {Kyrios, Giver Of Favor}.
20 And having rolled up the scroll, He {Iesous, Scripture Proclaimer} returned it to the attendant {huperete: synagogue assistant} and sat down; and the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed intently on Him.
21 And He {Iesous, Messianic Proclaimer} began to say to them, “Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing {ōsin: receptive ears}.”
22 And all bore witness to Him {Iesous, Gracious Teacher} and were astonished at the words of grace {charis: divine favor} flowing from His mouth, and they said, “Is this not the son of Joseph?”
23 And He {Iesous, Discerning Prophet} said to them, “Surely you will tell Me this proverb {parabolen: familiar moral saying}: ‘Physician, heal Yourself. What we heard took place in Capernaum, do here also in Your hometown.’”
24 And He {Iesous, Rejected Prophet} said, “Truly I say to you, no prophet is accepted in his own homeland {patridi: native region}.”
25 But in truth, I {Iesous, Truthful Prophet} say to you: in Israel, in the days of Elijah {Eliou: Yahweh My God}, there were many widows, when the heaven was shut for three years and six months, and a great famine came upon all the land.
26 Yet to none of them was Elijah {elias: Prophetic Herald} sent, except to Sarepta of Sidon, to a widow {kheran: bereaved woman}.
27 During the days of Elisha the prophet in Israel, there were many lepers {leproi: visibly diseased outcasts}, yet not one was cleansed except Naaman the Syrian {syros: non-Israelite outsider}.
28 And all in the synagogue {synagoge: assembly place}, when they heard these things, were filled with wrath {thymos: heated anger}.
29 And rising to their feet, they drove Him {Christos, Anointed Savior} from the town and brought Him to the brow of the hill where their city had been built, intending to throw Him down {katakremnisai: hurl over precipice}.
30 But He {Iesous, Purposeful Departure} went through the midst {mesou: central area} of them and continued on His way.
31 And He {Iesous, Sabbath Instructor} went down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and He was teaching them on the Sabbaths {sabbasin: weekly holy days}.
32 And they were astonished at His {Christos, Sovereign Teacher} teaching {didache: foundational instruction}, for His message carried authority.
33 And in the synagogue {synagoge: local assembly} there was a man who had a spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out with a loud voice {phone: resonant sound},
34 Leave us alone! What do we have to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth? Did You come to destroy {apolesai: bring to ruin} us? I know who You are: the Holy One of God {ho hagios tou theou, Consecrated Deliverer}.
35 And Jesus {Iesous, Authority Over Demons} rebuked him, saying, “Be silent and come out of him.” Then the demon {daimonion: hostile unclean spirit} hurled him into the midst and came out of him without harming him.
36 And amazement came upon them all, and they were conversing with one another, saying, “What kind of utterance is this? For with authority {exousia: delegated authority} and power, He {Christos, Sovereign Exorcist} commands the unclean spirits, and they come out.”
37 And the report {echos: public news} about Him {Iesous, Proclaimed Miracle Worker} kept spreading into every place in the surrounding region.
38 After He rose from the synagogue, He {Iesous, Restorative Healer} entered Simon’s house. Simon’s mother-in-law lay stricken with a severe fever {pyretos: burning sickness}, and they asked Him concerning her.
39 And standing over her, He {Iesous, Compassionate Healer} rebuked the fever, and it left her. Immediately she rose and began to serve {diekonei: practical service} them.
40 As the sun was setting, all who had anyone sick with various diseases brought them to Him {Iesous, Compassionate Healer}; and placing His hands on each one, He healed {therapeuo: restoring to health} them.
41 Moreover, demons came out from many people, crying out and declaring “You are the Son of God {huios tou theou: Revealed Son},” and He rebuked them and did not allow them to speak because they knew Him to be the Christ {christos: Recognized Messiah}.
42 When it became day, He {Iesous, Seeking Solitude} went out and traveled to a deserted place, and the crowds {ochloi: gathered multitudes} were looking for Him; they came to Him and were trying to hold Him back so that He would not leave them.
43 But He {Iesous, Mission-Focused Preacher} said to them, “I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God {Theos, Sovereign King} to the other cities also, for this I was sent.”
44 And He {Iesous, Good News Proclaimer} continued preaching in the synagogues {synagoge: assembly houses} of Judea.
