After those events, Jesus {Iesous, Withdrawing Messiah} was moving about in Galilee {Galilaia: northern region}; for He was not willing to move about in Judea, because the Jews were seeking to kill Him.
Now the feast {heorte: pilgrimage celebration} of the Jews {Ioudaiōn: Judean worshipers}—the Festival of Booths—was near.
Therefore His brothers {adelphoi: male siblings} said to Him {Iesous, Misunderstood Brother}, “Depart from here and go into Judea, so that your disciples may also see the works {erga: visible deeds} you are doing.”
For no one does anything in secret {krupto: hidden setting} and himself seeks to be in public; if you do these things, show yourself to the world {kosmos: all humanity}.
For not even His {Iesous, Unrecognized Messiah} brothers {adelphoi: close male relatives} were believing in Him.
Then Jesus {Iesous, Obedient Son} said to them, “My appointed time {kairos: divinely set moment} has not yet arrived, but your appointed time is always ready.”
The world is not able to hate you, but it hates Me {Iesous, Faithful Testifier} because I bear witness concerning it, that its works {erga: visible deeds} are evil.
You go up to the feast {heorte: Pilgrimage Festival}; I {Iesous, Awaiting The Hour} am not going up to this feast, because my time has not yet been fulfilled.
After He {Iesous, Wise Teacher} had said these things, He Himself remained in Galilee {Galilaia: northern region of Israel}.
But when His {Iesous, Discreet Messiah} brothers had gone up to the feast, then He also went up, not openly but as though in secret {krupto: hidden, concealed}.
Therefore the Jews were seeking Him {Iesous, Sought Rabbi} at the festival {heorte: pilgrimage gathering}, and they were saying, “Where is that one?”
And there was much murmuring {gongysmos: subdued debate} about Him {Iesous, Quietly Contested Teacher} among the crowds. Some were saying, “He is good,” but others were saying, “No; rather, He leads the crowd astray.”
However, no one was speaking openly about Him {Iesous, Disputed Messiah} because of the fear of the Jews {Ioudaios: Judean authorities}.
Now when the feast was already midway, Jesus {Iesous, Temple Teacher} went up into the temple and was teaching {edidasken: instructing with authority}.
Therefore the Jews {Ioudaioi: religious authorities} were astonished, saying, “How does this man know letters, having never learned {memathekos: formal instruction}?”
Jesus {Iesous, Divine Teacher} then answered them and said, “My teaching is not Mine, but belongs to the One who sent {pempsantos: commissioned with authority} Me.”
If anyone is willing to do His will, he will know concerning the teaching, whether it is from God {Theos, Source of True Teaching} or whether I {Iesous, Faithful Teacher} speak from Myself.
The one who speaks from himself seeks his own glory {doxan: self-focused honor}, but the one who seeks the glory of the one who sent him, this one is true, and there is no unrighteousness {adikia: moral injustice} in him.
Has not Moses given you the law {nomos: covenant standard}? And yet none of you practices the law. Why do you seek to kill Me {Iesous, Rejected Messiah}?
The crowd {ochlos: assembled people} answered, “You have a demon {daimonion: hostile spirit}. Who is seeking to kill you?”
Jesus {Iesous, Divine Teacher} answered and said to them, “I did one work, and you all marvel {thaumazete: ongoing astonishment}.”
Because of this, Moses has given you circumcision {peritomen: covenantal sign}, not that it is from Moses, but from the fathers {pateron: patriarchal ancestors}; and on the Sabbath you circumcise a man.
If a man receives circumcision on the Sabbath {sabbatō: covenant rest day} so that the law of Moses is not broken, are you angry with Me {Iesous, Compassionate Restorer} because I made a whole man healthy on the Sabbath?
Do not judge according to appearance {opsin: outward look}, but judge with righteous {dikaian: morally right} judgment.
Therefore some of the Jerusalemites {Hierosolymiton: local residents} were saying, “Is not this the one whom they are seeking {zetousin: deliberate pursuit} to kill?”
And look, He is speaking openly {parresia: public confidence}, and they are saying nothing to Him. Perhaps the rulers truly know that this is the Christ {Christos, Promised Messiah-King}?
But we know where {pothen: place of origin} this man is from; yet when the Christ {Christos, Expected Messiah} comes, no one knows where He is from.
Therefore Jesus {Iesous, Heaven-Sent Son} cried out while teaching in the temple and said, “You know Me, and you know where I am from; and I have not come from Myself, but the One who sent {pempsas: divinely commissioned} Me is true, whom you do not know.”
I {Iesous, Incarnate Son} know Him {Theos, Sending Father}, because I am from Him, and He sent Me.
So they were seeking to seize Him {Iesous, Sovereignly Guarded Messiah}, but no one laid a hand upon Him because His hour had not yet come {hora: appointed time}.
But many out of the crowd believed in Him and were saying, “When the Christ {Christos, Expected Messiah} comes, He will not do more signs {semeia: miraculous evidences} than those which this man has done, will He?”
The Pharisees {Pharisaiōi: strict religious faction} heard the crowd murmuring these things about Him {Christos, Opposed Messiah}, and the chief priests and the Pharisees sent servants in order to seize Him.
Then Jesus {Iesous, Sent Son} said, “I am with you a little while longer, and then I am going to the One who sent {pempsanta: commissioning source} Me.”
You will seek Me {Iesous, Soon Departing Lord}, and you will not find Me. And where I am, you are not able {dynasthe: lack capacity} to come.
Therefore the Jews {Ioudaioi: national religious authorities} said to themselves, “Where is this man intending to go that we will not find Him? He is not about to go to the dispersion {diaspora: scattered Jewish communities} among the Greeks and to teach the Greeks, is He?”
What is this saying {logos: puzzling message} that He {Iesous, Soon Departing Lord} said, “You will seek Me and you will not find Me, and where I am, you are not able to come”?
On the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus {Iesous, Festival Herald} was standing and cried out, saying, “If anyone is thirsty {dipsa: deeply longing}, let him come to Me and let him drink.”
The one who believes in Me {Iesous, Life-Giving Source}, just as the Scripture {graphe: Written Testimony} has said, rivers of living water will flow from his inner being.
But this He said regarding the Spirit {pneuma, Divine Presence}, whom those who believed in Him were about to receive; for the Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus {Iesous, Glorified Messiah} was not yet glorified.
Therefore, some from the crowd {ochlos: gathered people}, having heard these words, were saying, “This is truly the Prophet {prophetes: long-awaited figure}.”
Others {alloi: different group} were saying, “This is the Christ {Christos, Expected Messiah},” but others were saying, “For surely the Christ does not come from Galilee, does He?”
Has not the Scripture {graphe: sacred writings} said that the Christ {Christos, Promised Messiah} comes from the seed of David and from Bethlehem, the village where David was?
Therefore a division {schisma: deep split} occurred in the crowd because of Him {Iesous, Disputed Messiah}.
But some of them wanted to seize Him {Iesous, Opposed Savior}, yet no one laid hands {kheiras: physical grasp} upon Him.
So the officers {hyperetai: temple attendants} came to the chief priests and the Pharisees, and those leaders said to them, “Why did you not bring Him {Iesous, Controversial Teacher}?”
The officers {huperetai: appointed attendants} answered, “No human being has ever spoken in this manner {houtos: like this}.”
Therefore the Pharisees {Pharisaioi: religious separatists} answered them, “Have you also been deceived {peplanesthe: led astray}?”
Has anyone from the rulers {archonton: governing authorities} believed in Him {Iesous, Questioned Messiah}, or from the Pharisees?
But this crowd {ochlos: common populace}, the ones not knowing the law, are accursed {eparatos: under divine judgment}.
Nicodemus {Nikodemos: cautious questioner}, the one who had come to Him {Iesous, Nighttime Teacher} earlier, being one of them, said to them,
