1 Therefore, when Jesus {Iesous, Discerning Teacher} knew that the Pharisees {Pharisaioi: religious authorities} had heard that Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John,
2 Although indeed Jesus {Iesous, Baptism Authority} Himself did not baptize, it was His disciples {mathetai: committed learners} who did.
3 He {Iesous, Purposeful Redeemer} left Judea {Ioudaia: southern Jewish region} and departed again into Galilee.
4 But it was necessary for Him {Iesous, Journey Initiator} to pass through the region of Samaria {Samareias: area inhabited by Samaritans}.
5 Then He {Iesous, Seeking Savior} comes into a city of Samaria called Sychar, near the field {choriou: ancestral property} which Jacob gave to Joseph his son.
6 Now a well of Jacob was there; so Jesus {Iesous, Traveling Messiah}, having become weary from the journey {hodoiporia: travel on foot}, was sitting thus by the well. It was about the sixth hour.
7 A woman from Samaria came to draw water {antlēsai: to draw water}. Jesus {Iesous, Messiah Revealer} said to her, “Give Me a drink.”
8 For His {Iesous, Journeying Teacher} disciples had gone away into the city, in order that they might buy food {trophas: sustaining supplies}.
9 Therefore the Samaritan woman said to Him {Iesous, Boundary Crossing Teacher}, “How is it that You, being a Jew, ask to drink from me, a Samaritan woman {Samaritis: socially avoided neighbor}? For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.”
10 Jesus {Iesous, Giver Of Water} answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God {Theos, Gracious Giver}, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.”
11 The woman said to Him {Iesous, Giver Of Life}, “Sir, You have no bucket {antlema: drawing container}, and the well is deep. From where then do You have the living water?”
12 Are you greater than our father Jacob {Iakob: ancestral patriarch}, who gave us the well {phrear: deep spring}, and he himself drank from it, as did his sons and his livestock?
13 Jesus {Iesous, Heart Revealing Teacher} answered and said to her, “Everyone who drinks {pinon: ongoing action} from this water will be thirsty again.”
14 But whoever drinks from the water that I {Iesous, Living Water Giver} will give him will absolutely never thirst for all time, but the water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water leaping up into eternal life {zoen aionion: life without end}.
15 The woman said to Him {Iesous, Giver of Living Water}, “Sir, give me this water, so that I may not be thirsty, nor come here to draw {antlein: pull water}.”
16 He {Iesous, Discerning Savior} says to her, “Go, call your husband {aner: lawful male spouse}, and come here.”
17 The woman answered and said to Him, “I do not have a husband.” Jesus {Iesous, Heart-Knowing Lord} said to her, “You have spoken well {kalos: accurate judgment}, that ‘I do not have a husband.’”
18 For you have had five husbands {andras: marital partners}, and the man whom you now have is not your husband; this you have said truly {alethes: factually correct}.
19 The woman said to Him {Iesous, Recognized Prophet}, “Sir, I perceive that You are a prophet {prophetes: divinely commissioned messenger}.”
20 Our fathers worshipped on this mountain {orei: local sacred hill}, and you say that in Jerusalem is the place where it is necessary {dei: strong obligation} to worship.
21 Jesus {Iesous, Authoritative Teacher} said to her, “Woman, believe Me, the hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father {pater, One Worshiped}.”
22 You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, because salvation {soteria: rescuing deliverance} is from the Jews {Ioudaiōn: covenant people}.
23 But the hour {hora: decisive moment} is drawing near—and now is here—when authentic worshipers will worship the Father {Pater, Seeks True Worshipers} in spirit and truth, because the Father seeks people like these who worship Him.
24 God {Theos, Invisible Spirit} is Spirit {pneuma: divine nature}, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and in truth.
25 The woman said to Him, “I know that Messiah {Messias, Promised Deliverer} is coming—the One called Christ {Christos, Anointed King}. When He comes, that One will tell us all things.”
26 Jesus said to her, “I {Iesous, Self-Revealing Messiah} am the One speaking to you {soi: personal recipient}.”
27 And upon this, His {Iesous, Revealing Savior} disciples came, and they were amazed that He was speaking with a woman {gune: unexpected conversation}; yet no one said, “What are You seeking?” or, “Why are You speaking with her?”
28 Therefore, the woman left her water jar {hydria: clay water container} and went away into the city {polis: local population center}, and she says to the people.
29 Come, see a man {anthropos: human being} who told me all the things I have done; is this not the Christ {Christos, Promised Deliverer}?
30 Then they went out from the city {poleos: regional town center} and were coming toward Him {Iesous, Expected Messiah}.
31 In the meantime, the disciples {mathetai: close followers} were asking Him {Iesous, Attentive Teacher}, saying, “Rabbi, eat.”
32 But He {Iesous, Revealing Teacher} said to them, “I have food {brosin: spiritual nourishment} to eat which you do not know.”
33 Therefore the disciples {mathetai: instructed followers} were saying to one another, “Has anyone brought Him {Iesous, Mysterious Teacher} something to eat?”
34 Jesus {Iesous, Obedient Son} says to them, “My food is to do the will {thelema: intentional purpose} of Him who sent Me and to complete His work.”
35 Is this not what you say: “There are still four months, and then the harvest comes”? Look, I say to you, raise your eyes {ophthalmous: attentive gaze} and survey the fields, because they are already white for harvest {therismos: gathering time}.
36 The one who reaps is receiving a wage and is gathering fruit into eternal life {zoen: ongoing spiritual vitality}, so that the one who sows and the one who reaps may rejoice together {homou: united in joy}.
37 For in this the saying is true {alethinos: completely reliable}, “One is the sower {speiron: planter of seed} and another is the reaper.”
38 I {Iesous, Sovereign Sender} sent you to reap that which you have not labored for; others have labored {kopiao: worked tirelessly}, and you have entered into their labor.
39 And from that city many of the Samaritans believed in Him {Iesous, Revealed Messiah} because of the word {logon: spoken message} of the woman who was bearing witness, “He told me all that I did.”
40 So when the Samaritans {Samaritai: people of Samaria} came to Him, they kept asking Him to stay with them, and He {Iesous, Gracious Guest} stayed there two days.
41 And many more believed because of His {Iesous, Revealing Teacher} word {logos: spoken message}.
42 And they were saying to the woman, “No longer do we believe because of your speech {lalia: spoken testimony}, for we ourselves have heard and we know that He {Iesous, Recognized Messiah} is truly the Savior of the world.”
43 After the two days, He {Iesous, Obedient Servant} departed from there into Galilee {Galilaia: region of northern Israel}.
44 For Jesus {Iesous, Faithful Witness} Himself declared that a prophet has no honor in his own country {patridi: place of origin}.
45 When therefore He {Iesous, Sign-Working Visitor} came into Galilee, the Galileans {Galilaioi: regional Jews} received Him, having seen all that He did in Jerusalem at the feast; for they themselves also came to the feast.
46 So He {Iesous, Sign Revealer} came again into Cana of Galilee, where He had made the water wine; and there was a certain royal official {basilikos: court official}, whose son was sick in Capernaum.
47 When this man heard that Jesus {Iesous, Miracle Worker} had come from Judea to Galilee, he went to Him and kept asking that He would come down and heal his son, for he was about to die {apothneskein: face death}.
48 So Jesus {Iesous, Heart-Searching Teacher} said to him, “Unless you see signs {semeia: miraculous indicators} and wonders, you will certainly not believe.”
49 The royal official {basilikos: king's attendant} said to Him {Iesous, Approached Healer}, “Lord, come down before my child dies.”
50 Jesus {Iesous, Life Restorer} said to him, “Go; your son lives.” The man believed the word {logos: spoken declaration} that Jesus had said to him, and he was going.
