1 And the word of the LORD {YHWH, Message Giver} came to me, saying {lemor: introducing direct speech},
2 Son of man {ben-adam: prophetic summons}, make known to Jerusalem her abominations {toavot: detestable practices}.
3 And you shall say, “Thus says the Lord GOD {Adonai YHWH: Covenant Judge} to Jerusalem: Your origins {mechorotayikh: ancestral roots} and your births are from the land of Canaan; your father was an Amorite, and your mother a Hittite.”
4 And as for your birth {moledet: nativity}, on the day you were born, your cord was not cut, and you were not washed with water for cleansing {mishi: purification}, nor were you salted, and you were not swaddled.
5 No eye {ayin: observant concern} pitied you to do for you one of these things in compassion; but you were thrown into the open field, because you were loathed {begoal: treated as disgusting} on the day you were born.
6 And I {YHWH, Life-Giver} passed over you and saw you wallowing {mitboseset: struggling helplessly} in your blood, and I said to you in your blood, “Live!”—yes, I said to you in your blood, “Live!”
7 I {YHWH, Creator Sustainer} made you a multitude like a sprout {ketzemach: new life imagery} of the field; you multiplied and grew and came into the fullness of adornments. Your breasts were formed, and your hair grew; yet you remained naked and bare.
8 I passed by you and saw you, and behold, it was the season of love, and I spread my wing over you and covered your nakedness {ervah: uncovered state}. I swore an oath to you and entered into a covenant with you, declares the Lord GOD {Adonai YHWH, Covenant-Maker}, and you became mine.
9 I {YHWH, Healer and Restorer} washed {erhatzekh: ritual cleansing} you with water, rinsed your blood from upon you, and anointed you with oil.
10 I clothed you with embroidered work, I shod you with tachash {tachash: fine leather}, I wrapped you in linen, and I covered you with silk {meshi: precious fabric}.
11 And I {YHWH, Covenant Husband} adorned you with my ornament {edi: intimate adornment}, and I placed bracelets on your hands, and a chain on your neck.
12 And I placed a ring {nezem: decorative nose ornament} on your nose, and earrings on your ears, and a beautiful crown {ateret: symbol of honor} on your head.
13 Thus you were adorned {adad: ceremonially dressed} with gold and silver, and your clothing was of fine linen, silk, and embroidered work. You ate fine flour, honey, and oil, and you became exceedingly beautiful, and you advanced into royalty {mamlakah: royal rule}.
14 And your renown went out among the nations because of your beauty, for it was perfect through My splendor {bahadari: majestic radiance} which I placed upon you, declares the Lord GOD {Adonai YHWH, Sovereign Master}.
15 But you trusted in your beauty {yafyeikh: physical allure} and became unfaithful because of your name {shemekh: social reputation}; you poured out your acts of harlotry upon every passerby—it belonged to him.
16 You took from your garments {beged: dignified covering} and made for yourself decorated high places, and there you played the harlot {tizni: unfaithful worship} upon them—such things have not happened, nor shall they ever be.
17 And you took the ornaments of your beauty from my gold and my silver, which I {YHWH, Faithful Giver} had given you, and you made for yourself images of men, and you committed adultery {vatiznivam: covenant betrayal} with them.
18 And you took your embroidered garments {bigdei: status symbol} and covered them, and you placed my oil and my incense {qatarti: sacred aroma} before them.
19 And my bread {lachmi: food provision}, which I gave to you—fine flour, oil, and honey with which I fed you—you set it before them as a pleasing aroma; and so it was, declares the Lord GOD {Adonai YHWH, Sovereign Master}.
20 And you took your sons and your daughters, whom you bore to Me {YHWH, Guardian of Covenant}, and you sacrificed them to be consumed. Is this of your whoredoms {taznutayikh: repeated betrayals} not a small matter?
21 And you slaughtered {vattishḥati: ritual killing} my sons and gave them over when you caused them to pass through {behaʿavir: sacrificing by fire} for them.
22 And concerning all your abominations and your whoredoms, you did not remember the days of your youth {neurayikh: time of immaturity}, when you were naked and bare, wallowing in your blood {bedameikh: physical vulnerability}.
23 And it happened after all your wickedness—woe {oy: deep anguish}, woe to you!—declares the Lord GOD {Adonai YHWH, Sovereign Master}.
24 And you built a mound {gev: earthen heap} for yourself and made a high place for yourself in every street {rechov: public square}.
25 At every head of the way you built your high place, and you caused your beauty {yofyech: visible appearance} to be abhorred, and you spread your feet to every passerby, and you multiplied your harlotries {taznutayich: repeated unfaithfulness}.
26 And you committed fornication {tizni: acts of unfaithfulness} with the sons of Egypt, your neighbors who were great of flesh, and you multiplied your harlotries to provoke Me {YHWH, Righteous Judge} to anger.
27 And behold, I {YHWH, Sovereign Judge} have stretched out My hand over you and have diminished your allotted portion, and I gave you over to the desire of those who hate you—the daughters of the Philistines, who are humiliated because of your lewd way {zimmah: sexual misconduct}.
28 And you played the harlot {zanah: covenant unfaithfulness} with the sons of Assyria, because you were not satisfied {savatekh: fulfillment of desire}; you even engaged in further harlotries, yet you could not be satisfied.
29 And you multiplied your fornication {taznutekh: spiritual adultery} to Canaan, the land of trade {kenaʿan: merchant land}, to Chaldea; and even with this you were not satisfied.
30 “How weak your heart has become, declares the Lord GOD {YHWH Adonai, Sovereign Ruler}, as you do all these things—the deeds of a domineering {shallatet: brazen, unrestrained} prostitute.”
31 In building your mound at the head of every road and erecting your high place in every street, you were not like a prostitute {zonah: woman engaged in immorality}, for you spurned payment {etnan: fee or wage for prostitution}.
32 You are the adulterous woman {hammena’efet: one practicing unfaithfulness}, who takes strangers {zarim: outsider lovers} instead of your husband.
33 To all prostitutes {zonot: women offering sexual services}, gifts are given, but you gave your gifts to all your lovers and bribed them to come to you from all around in your whoredoms {taznut: sexual unfaithfulness}, O woman.
34 And in you there was a reversal from other women in your harlotries {taznutayikh: acts of unfaithfulness}: no one sought you out to play the harlot, and in your giving payment, payment was not given to you—so you became a reversal {hefech: complete opposite}.
35 Therefore, O harlot, hear {shim‘i: listen attentively} the word of the LORD {YHWH, Judge and Messenger}.
36 Thus says the Lord GOD {Adonai YHWH: Sovereign Judge}; because your filthiness {nechushtekh: moral impurity} was poured out and your nakedness was uncovered according to your sexual promiscuity with your lovers, with all the idols of your abominations, and by the blood of your children whom you gave to them.
37 Therefore, behold, I {YHWH, Sovereign Judge} am gathering all your lovers whom you have mingled with, and all those whom you have loved, along with all those whom you have hated. And I will gather them against you from every side and will uncover your nakedness {erva: shameful exposure}, so that they may see all your nakedness.
38 And I {YHWH, Divine Judge} will judge you as adulteresses {noafot: marital unfaithfulness} and bloodshed perpetrators {shofkhot: bloodshed perpetrators} are judged, and I will give you blood in wrath and jealousy.
39 And I will give you into their hand, and they will tear down your mound {gabbeikh: pagan worship site} and break down your high places. They will strip you of your garments and take your vessels {tifarteikh: cultic treasures}, leaving you naked and bare.
40 And they will bring up an assembly {qahal: assembled group} against you, and they will stone you with stones {ba'aven: stoning stones}, and they will pierce you with their swords.
41 And they will burn your houses with fire, and they will execute judgments against you before the eyes of many women. And I will cause you to cease from your harlotry {mizzonah: illicit worship}, and you will never give your hire {etnan: cultic payment} again.
42 And I {YHWH, Just Judge} will cause my wrath {chamati: righteous indignation} to rest upon you, and my jealousy will depart from you. I will be quiet and will not be angry again.
43 Because you did not remember the days of your youth and provoked Me with all these things, behold, I also have set your way upon your own head, declares the Lord GOD {Adonai YHWH, Supreme Judge}. Have you not committed this lewdness {hazimmah: deliberate moral wickedness} in addition to all your abominations?
44 Behold, everyone who uses {moshel: one who makes or speaks proverbs} proverbs against you will use a proverb, saying, “Like mother {ima: female parent}, like her daughter.”
45 You are your mother’s daughter, loathing her husband and her children; and you are the sister of your sisters, who loathed their husbands and their children. Your mother was a Hittite {chittit: people of the land}, and your father an Amorite {emori: nation of Canaan}.
46 And your elder sister Samaria {Shomron: northern capital}, with her daughters dwelling on your left, and your younger sister Sodom {Sedom: site of destruction}, with her daughters dwelling on your right.
47 And you did not walk in their ways, nor did you do according to their abominations {toevah: detestable practice}; but as if that were a very small thing, you corrupted yourself {tashchit: self-ruin} more than they in all your ways.
48 As I live, declares the Lord GOD {Adonai YHWH, Sovereign Master}, Sodom {Sedom: city judged for extreme wickedness} your sister, she and her daughters have not done as you and your daughters have done.
49 Behold, this was the iniquity {avon: moral guilt} of your sister Sodom: pride, abundance of bread, and prosperity of ease were hers and her daughters’, but she did not strengthen the hand of the poor {ani: one suffering deprivation}.
50 And they became haughty and committed abomination {to‘ēḇā: morally detestable act} before Me {YHWH, Righteous Judge}. So I removed them as I saw fit.
